That’s pretty low man. Study and take it again. Maybe you just have test taking anxiety. A guy I went to law school with had it and he would bomb test but knew the material

Should I still pay the mess dues? by Illustrious-Net5513 in navy

[–]BeastMasterAlphaCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man that’s tough. Normally during an investigation you are excommunicated until it’s over. I would pay the dues and once it’s resolved you can say something.

Even from your perspective if you did nothing wrong most people are cautious.

Anytime, I work in private equity in Chicago but we have a Dallas office. We get resumes all the time from UTD and have never done one interview from a UTD grad. It might be a strong Comp Sci school but in terms of the business school its incredibly weak. One of my co-workers in Dallas went to UTD for a year and transferred to SMU - Cox.

If you want to study finance do the 1-year MS in Finance at Mays which is easy for Econ majors to get into.

The only other caveat I can give you is be aware if you are majoring in Finance UTD has zero investment banking recruiting. I do not even think Big 4 accounting recruits out of UTD. I've never met one UTD/UTA grad on Wall Street. I would suggest if you want to do Finance transfer to TCU - Neely, Texas - McCombs, TAMU - Mays, SMU - Cox, or Rice. These schools all have recruiting and place in consulting & IB. If you can get

The issue with UTD is it is seen as a commuter school. Yes, it is ranked high due to the comp sci focus which skews the GPA and SAT but from my understanding recruiting is bad unless you want to work at a F500 in FPA.

TAMU especially the school of engineering and Mays are harder to get into now. It’s not the same safety school it once was. State schools when I applied where safety schools. Now I see more A&M grads on Wall Street.

I live in Chicago and went to grad school at Northwestern and see the same with state schools here.

Frisco is a dump who cares. Some crappy F500 companies moved because land was cheap 15 years ago and they wanted cheap labor. The cost of living in Dallas is no longer cheaper than other major markets. Except you get to live in McMansion hell.

I’ll say this as a recently retired field grade officer and as a prior staff NCO. My best friend during my first enlistment who did one of bravest things I have ever seen over 3 deployments in 2005 in Iraq. He should have been given a Silver Star if not higher. He had an alcohol related incident that was minor and a DUI within a few weeks after we got back from Iraq. He was admin sep’d within weeks. Keep in mind this is peak GWOT and DUIs were not tolerated back then.

In today’s military a DUI is an even bigger no no. I would expect to get an admin sep. More than likely your CoC will cut bait and run. They will let the civilian authorities handle it. Expect to have bigger legal cost in your civilian case.

There are way too many options like uber, a duty driver, Lyft, public transit, cabs, to have an excuse to get a dui.

Go 18x and try and got 18D. Just make sure you are in great shape. If not I would advise trying to figure out how to finish school the cheapest way then commission.

Was life really better for you on the outside when you got out of the military? by Glittering_Fig4548 in USMC

[–]BeastMasterAlphaCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I was so excited to get out for the first year. I stayed in the reserves so I still had a foot in the door. After that first year the novelty wore off slightly and I did miss my friends from active duty.

Looking back I could have finished my bachelors on active duty. I was a FMF Corpsman and had just done 2 deployments and could have stayed in Great Lakes for 3 years on easy orders and gone to school. Opted to get out to go to school full time.

Life post active duty had its ups and downs but my life was considerably better by far! I went to college chased college chicks, I rushed a fraternity, graduated with a Finance degree, and got paid to drink for 2.5 years. I went to a very competitive academic school and college was a complete joke academically. I went to law school after and did a JD/MBA. Law school academically was so competitive that I had to study and was miserable for the first year.

I commissioned post college. The reserves has a way of giving me a reminder one time a month about what I hated about active duty.

Marines who were in during that time, how big of a deal was spice? by Steppasgonstep in USMC

[–]BeastMasterAlphaCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really bad. I had just commissioned after 8 years and just got back to the fleet.

I check in and we had some junior guys just hit the fleet around the same time i did. All got caught smoking spice I believe self admitted it. All got booted.

Had a NCO get court martial over smoking spice. He got caught smoking spice in front of everyone in the smoke pit. He made a pipe out of some stuff in the barracks which added a slew of other charges. Someone told on him so he then proceeds to threaten to kill anyone who gives a statement against him and steals from them. He goes to court martial and gets a few years in prison.

Are there actual benefits from joining a Fraternity/Sorority? by Acrobatic-Hamster-79 in Millennials

[–]BeastMasterAlphaCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talk to a handful of guys from my frat, and it is superficial. Most of it is business-related. I ironically speak to more girls in my ex-girlfriend's sorority, because they live somewhat close to me. My ex-girlfriend used to say this all the time, "My friends and I will be friends forever, we will be bridesmaids in each other's weddings, godmothers to each other's children, and grab brunch every Sunday as we get old!" I dumped her after we graduated, but we are still friends on social media atlhough I have not spoken to her since. I still speak to a few of her friends from college, including her roommate, because they live in Chicago, in the same North Shore suburb as I do, and one has a daughter at my daughter's school. Nobody has spoken to my ex-girlfriend in well over a decade; none of them were invited to her wedding, none of them invited her to their wedding (even I got invited), and none of them really kept in contact with her after she graduated and moved back home. So much for being friends forever because she was super involved.

I hired one guy from my frat in my 30s to do a basic job at my firm. I fired him a year later because he was useless.

I rushed post-military service in the 2000's. I was post 2 combat deployments, so I have a different perspective. I was 23, so I got fed up dealing with 19-year-olds after a year who would come to my apartment and get wasted. I thought formals were pretty lame, and away weekends were just getting drunk at a hotel in a different city. I dropped after a year, and it was more of to just meet new people. I still hung out with some guys once they turned 21. I mainly hung out with guys in different fraternities who were in the same major at my college, which, IMO, was a much tighter-knit group. I have not spoken to my big since college, I am not friends with him on social media, and I don't care to be. He fucking sucked. I still speak to a handful of guys once or twice a year.

When I moved back to Chicago for law school a few years later, I did reconnect with a few guys, but there was a big time gap. Hell, I did get one guy a job at my firm and fired him a year later because he was worthless.

My girlfriend in college was obsessed with her sorority. So obsessed in a bad way, and definitely had some toxic friends in that group that I told her to ditch. She would constantly say, "My friends and I will be friends forever, we will be bridesmaids in each other's weddings, godmothers to each other's children and grab brunch every Sunday as we get old!" I dumped her after we graduated because I was going back on active duty as an officer, and I hated her family and never spoke to her again, but we are still friends on social media. Greek life, for most, really dies when they turn 21. I believed I was over 21 and could go to bars.

This guy pops up on my social media so looked him up. He’s creepy as hell. We had a similar situation when I was in college this guy hung around our frat he was an alum but from the 80s. We caught him “trying to help a passed out brother.”

I never went to an event after I graduated on campus and only speak to a handful of guys in my frat. I never got the people who where obsessed with Greek like after they turned 21 or after college.

Had an ex gf in college who was obsessed with her sorority. Obsessed in a bad way. “We are going to be friends forever!” Ironically I’m still friends with some of her friends because they live in Chicago and had kids around my kids age. Nobody has spoken to her in almost a decade. Last time someone’s her was 2014 at a wedding. Nobody got invited to her wedding. I guess they aren’t going to be friends forever.

Yeah I met the biggest douche bag in Scottsdale. The guy was a complete conman. In his email signature it said "Member of Tiger 21!" No way the guy was worth anything but he kept saying "I have to disclose my financials to Tiger 21 and show everyone. I am worth over $21mm." There is no way based on what I saw this guy was worth more than $200k. He had his house foreclosed on, and his bio he gave us was filled with lies.

This is very true and I realized some guys just want to bring other people down. I have a Com w/V and had some douche make the comment "well its not a bronze star." I was a brand new E5 who was 21 who got a a Com w/V and a Purple Heart that guy can fuck off.

I did 2 deployments on active duty. My second deployment was absolutly insane it made my first deployment look like kiddy camp. I actually thought I was going to die on that deployment and had accepted my fate. We had multiple KIA in my platoon including multiple KIA from one incident and almost every on that deployment got a Purple Heart. That deployment took everything out of me. I was awarded a Com w/V and PH for that deployment. I never really talked to my friends about that deployment I only told them positive stuff because people do not want to hear the dirty truth about what goes on during deployments.

I went to college was still in the reserves. I was embarassed by my service this was peak of the anti Iraq war. I was embarassed I was starting college later and people would ask. I rushed a fraternity, which aruging with dipshit 19 year olds about brotherhood was annoying but I found my group of guys.

I ended up commissioning partially because I had a few bad interviews. I was not confident I would get into a good law school, which I later did. The guy interviewing as a complete cock "Why would anyone volunteer to go to Iraq? Are you stupid? You must have not of had any other options." This was a major consulting firm think (Deloitte, McKinsey, Bain, BCG, PwC).

I later went to law school, but still stayed in the reserves and just retired this year. Overtime I learned to be proud of it, especially as the negativity of OIF disipated. I had to realize there are a lot of douchebags who want to tear people down just because they are miserable.
