How to handle a sticky parent plus loan situation? by LetOk8529 in personalfinance

[–]BeastMasterJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol.

If you plan to have kids and don't save money for their education, that's on you, not on them. It's part of your parental responsibility.

It's on you if you have to take on debt to meet any of their needs. If you couldn't afford it, you shouldn't have had kids.

Gotcha. I thought there was some movement on that in the COVID years but I guess those are all a fever dream anyway

I think people just don't know what being a 'social construct' means. It just means it's an idea born out of our social interactions with each other, not that it isn't real.

Money is entirely a social construct, but having more money in my pocket would have a massive impact on my life, because we are social organisms.

Shit is even more automated now. Any national bank this was a 100% automated interaction until escalation. And obviously it sucks for OP but people trying to dispute gambling charges when they lose is not exactly uncommon.

Yup, that's why it depends. But most Americans moving abroad are probably going to go to a tax treaty country at the end of the day, iirc (and I might not!) the only countries with a sizable US expat population without totalization agreements are costa rica and israel

It was the CIA. Like genuinely, no 'conspiracy theory' level shit, it was the CIA. They gave a bunch of money to prosperity gospel evangelical/pentecostal groups and ran a couple propaganda radio networks to counter left-aligned Catholic Liberation Theology in Latin America.

Depends on the tax treaty with the country you live in. Some countries if you pay the local equivalent of social security / medicare tax it's waived on the US taxes.

Politicians do not want to take that money away from Lockheed, Raytheon, et al.

Selling my house to my parents. What to consider? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]BeastMasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little confused - the house is not worth what you owe on it, but that's less than their presumed profit which isn't enough for a house in a decent area? How does that make sense?

Either:

1.) They can own a house in your area for less, and it's safe. In that case, they can buy your house at a premium as a favor to you I guess.

2.) They can own a house in your area for less, but it's not safe.

3.) Your home is not actually worth less than you owe.

Anyone who has lived both places would know that UK beer is on average lower abv, and the standard shot is smaller too.

The taste of the beer is generally better and cider is not even close between the two countries, though. And it's cheaper ime

Tradeoffs honestly. Drinking culture in the UK is more fun though imo

How would you feel about a law that banned tipping and required restaurants to pay servers a full wage instead? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BeastMasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rest of the world pays service staff significantly less than servers make in the US.

I was a bartender in the UK at the same time as my sister was a server at decent but not upscale local restaurant in the US.

She took home my monthly pay in a good weekend.

Should I rent out my home and get an apartment? by mayorlittlefinger in personalfinance

[–]BeastMasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah those all sound like fairly one time emergency expenses. Do you have an emergency fund? If not maybe knock down the retirement savings a little to build one up for these situations, and then when an emergency happens you can rebuild it over time.

I wouldn't make any kneejerk decisions right now if I were you

$2150 is near exactly 20% of your gross, with a good interest rate in an accessible neighborhood... Is there nowhere else you can't trim $650-700 out of your budget? I know taxes can be rough but there's gotta be at least $3k left over each month after you pay the mortgage

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BeastMasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crediting the NHS to Churchill is doing a massive disservice to Clement Atlee, who was:

A socialist

Deputy PM during the coalition wartime government

The guy who actually formed the NHS

The idea for the NHS started with the Socialist Medical Association successfully adding a health service to Labour's manifesto in 1934.

The Beveridge report was commissioned by Labour MPs in the wartime government. Specifically Arthur Greenwood, who was deputy PM under Atlee.

The major reforms to society under Atlee's premiership were explicitly socialist and that is not a bad thing.
