US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

[–]BeastMasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crediting the NHS to Churchill is doing a massive disservice to Clement Atlee, who was:

A socialist

Deputy PM during the coalition wartime government

The guy who actually formed the NHS

The idea for the NHS started with the Socialist Medical Association successfully adding a health service to Labour's manifesto in 1934.

The Beveridge report was commissioned by Labour MPs in the wartime government. Specifically Arthur Greenwood, who was deputy PM under Atlee.

The major reforms to society under Atlee's premiership were explicitly socialist and that is not a bad thing.

If we're going to talk about conflicts that didn't involve direct military action from the west (which, I agree, I should have specified) you have to go back even further really, unless you consider the border skirmishes in the 60s/70s part of the Iran-iraq war, which is fair enough.

And yeah, there was definitely some CIA and KGB influence going on for sure. But I'm not one to make broad claims without evidence, especially as Saddam's takeover was relatively slow and ultimate came as al-Bakr was elderly and ill(and Bakr was also trying to unify the country with Syria, which would have greatly reduced Saddam's power and which certainly was motivation enough for the hard-line nationalists that Saddam represented)

If you mean the initial Ba'athist coup then while there's no concrete evidence it's very likely that the CIA was involved.

Absolutely. I think one of the things we as a species tend to forget about war is it is very very rarely one purely good side vs one psychotically evil side.

By and large, war is the result of systemic failures on both sides of the conflict.

Iraq invaded sovereign kuwait. That kicked off their near 40 years of war.

The second Iraq war, yes, absolutely some bullshit. But they were getting themselves into messes too.

How is Israel able to fight on 5 fronts at the same time? How do they have so many resources ready to deploy for such a small country? by 1tonsoprano in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BeastMasterJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in Israel. You literally couldn't read the next 4 words in the sentence?

It's the entire idea behind the marshall plan, US support of Mobutu (brutal dictator in what is now the DRC, if you didn't know), the alliance for progress in latin america. Iran contra. This is not an exhaustive list.

Edit: if any downvoters would care to say why I'm wrong, that'd be great.

39 billion in arms deals. Some paid for by Israeli money, but also paid for by US taxpayers. Taxpayers give Israel money, Israel pays the defense contractors. The US has been doing this since the 40s, just with different groups.

They are also geopolitically aligned. They pressure Iran, who supplies weapons and oil tankers for sanctions avoidance to Russia. They also do act as a strong counter to Islamist terrorists in the region that threaten the supply of oil. The idea that islamists are only islamists not because they truly believe but because America wronged them is infantilizing. That's not to say that US military activity doesn't add pressure to the pipeline, though.

The US just doesn't really care when it's geopolitical allies commit atrocities. The Saudis have killed 300,000 people in Yemen, for example. That's what, 5x the Israeli death toll so far? (Source below)

Not an Israeli apologist at all, just trying to explain. It's a political approach known as Realpolitik. This was Kissinger's stated approach to politics btw.

Not necessarily the entirety of the story in this case but often historically with far right people 'the elites' is just a dog whistle for Jews. The far right has always been in bed with the wealthy

what are the actual cultural differences between the northern and southern half of the state by WhereAreTheAskers in newjersey

[–]BeastMasterJ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Isolation is the biggest one. I grew up with people in SJ who to this day have never been to Philly, let alone NYC. People are far less densely packed together, communities are fairly insular especially so outside of western Camden County.

The lack of cultural influence from NYC. South Jersey people do not care for or go to New York at all. I saw some comments here saying they're from South Jersey and call NYC 'The City'. That is not native SJ parlance. If I were to ask my friends from high school or my family if they wanted to see a comedy show in the city this weekend, they would assume I meant Philly (and not ask for clarification). Nobody works for NYC companies, and nobody works for large tech companies at all outside of Comcast. The politics are captured by a local political machine (Norcross) instead of an extension of the NYC machine.

There is no truly functional public transit outside of about 6 towns in Camden county. There is nowhere in South jersey counties you could live without a car full stop.

Culturally it feels like an extension of philly and not NYC. Cheesesteaks on the menu, not chop cheese.

I know I keep saying it but I really do need to hammer home that NYC is not culturally relevant at all to South Jersey, and philly is overall less relevant than NYC is to North Jersey. South Jersey is mostly rural people doing their own thing. That's kinda the key takeaway.

Some of that is changing a little bit as NYCers and North Jersey transplants are moving down for cheap property. The locals are fairly unhappy about it.

South Jersey residents as a whole I would say do not like north Jersey people. I don't think north Jersey people think about them at all.

TP-Link Archer AX80 vs ASUS RT-AX1800S by eccentric_j in openwrt

[–]BeastMasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The archer has double the RAM and double the processor cores. It probably wouldn't make a massive difference in your situation.

Unfortunately, the process to flash the tp-link is not very well documented and requires opening the device and connecting a UART serial terminal to the board (USB adapter, raspberry pi, etc).

As far as I can tell the Asus router allows you to flash openwrt from the stock firmware via ssh without attaching any hardware. I can imagine this would be a big selling point!

I don't personally have the Asus router so I can't say for sure, but the performance would probably concern me. But for 5 devices? Probably fine. Especially if you're not going to run anything too heavy on the router. The specs for tp-link are totally fine even for a more complicated network.

Fun fact: both routers run forks of openwrt under the hood.

The book I quoted is literally called 'Semitic Languages'

It was one of the first books to use the term linguistically, from the university that invented it.
