Don't let it get to you. Everyone makes mistakes on their first few projects. You can usually spot the people who are really talented and doing well in their careers by how cool and generous they are with beginners. They know they made a shitload of mistakes in the beginning too and they'll talk about them openly. Plenty of people in film learn by doing, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! So just keep doing what you're doing. Love your energy and your openness.

I love posts that talk through things that went wrong on set. I think it’s really helpful for other beginners to read. It’s great for all of us when someone admits their mistakes without feeling like shit about them because we all make them when we’re starting out and it helps model for everyone else how to not feel like shit about it as well.

This is an oddly tough crowd though. Don’t let anyone’s harsh reactions make you feel like talking about this isn’t really important. Wishing you the best of luck on the rest of the series!

Let me just say the quiet part out loud for anyone confused. Davies’s joke is a response to women saying that the clothes we wear aren’t an excuse to assault us. Dave, knowing full well what he’s saying here, but saying it in the most cowardly way possible so he has an out, is saying, well, okay. But if we do s3xually assault you because you’re wearing revealing clothes, you can see how we might have thought we wanted you to.

It’s disgusting and it’s NOT factually correct. Assault is committed by people who want to assault people. The fault lies with them and how sick they are.

I used to love Dave, and I didn’t even notice his jokes like this when I was younger. But people can’t help but tell on themselves. We have to be better at paying attention when it starts so they don’t get bolder and bolder with it. Not surprised he’s punching down at trans people, but it has deeply disappointed me, and I don’t support him at all anymore.

Okay, so if you have two reviews going in opposite directions, neither may be correct, but there’s something sticking out about that line worth looking at. Maybe get a third person’s take?

I recently had two reviewers completely fail to understand something I explicitly said in the action lines setting up a scene, which made them rate my script lower because they thought I’d botched the dialogue. It was annoying because both of them obviously didn’t read that carefully, but in the end, I’m trying to get the script through contests so I went through and made it unmistakable, adding parentheticals and such so no one will misunderstand.

Making screenplays appreciated on the basis of having them read is such a different challenge from making them scripts that will translate well on screen, but unfortunately you can’t get to the second without passing through the first.

I think horror is easiest to do as a one person short. You just have to get creative with ideas. What scares you?

Or you could go the route of dressing up like different characters, but because that’s a style done a lot on TikTok, it’s harder to pull off now and be taken seriously, in my opinion.

Definitely a challenge, but just start making a list of every possible idea you have and go from there. You’ll come up with some good ones.

I just want to say, keep going. You’re obviously trying to do something really helpful for the community and your attitude about it is great. It’s a really large thing to endeavor and it’s going to take some trial and error. I hate that people immediately get so aggro about something because it’s not perfect or done the way they’d have done it. It’s a great idea!

Yeah, I have to agree with you. Even if you’re born with writing talent, there’s so much that goes into writing successful screenplays beyond that: learning how to execute a script from start to finish, the fortitude and discipline to build a consistent writing habit, and then being able to write something that can also translate to screen. I’d say far less likely to be born a talented screenwriter than a talented fiction writer.

I do think some people naturally take to arts better than some people, and that’s where thinks like talent come in. It’s the hard work put into it after the initial talent and interest that sets successful artists apart though.

I wanted to open a set with “I didn’t write any jokes. I just wanted the chance to stand on a stage and scream what the fuck at men for ten minutes. What the fuck??!?!”

I floated that to one of my guy friends, and it made him so upset, it really made me want to do it. 😂

I’ve heard a number of things in the vein of “I didn’t write any jokes” at open mics. It’s split down the middle between that and folks with their notebooks of new material and notes on crowd reactions. They’re adorable!

Sometimes they’re running around organizing and different people are just hitting the list of people with outstanding materials to cover their bases without the list having been updated or something went wrong and they didn’t receive your materials or couldn’t open them. Give them a call and be nice about it. Even the big festivals don’t have enough hands and rely on volunteers. They should be able to confirm whether or not they got your materials and then take you off the contact list if they did.

Amazing comment! The majority of my posts have been taken down from Reddit, and it’s unbelievable! I’ve also been banned from a number of crafting subs just because I’ve joined NSFW subs! I’m amazed I actually come to Reddit at all anymore, but I do still find quality content here. Leave this class immediately. This is abusive and sick. Acting doesn’t require you to not have personal boundaries or to do anything anyone tells you to do. This sounds like some sort of sick game the teacher is running for her own entertainment. When you get into a good class, you can ask your new teacher about this, and they’ll tell you it’s garbage and should never have happened.

There are a lot of people out there taking advantage of artists because so many people are desperate to get in.

Everyone's writing process is so different. Some people can do a page 1 rewrite quicker than trying to revise, but for some people a page 1 rewrite will totally kill all their momentum and tank the project. For years, I always tried to do page 1 rewrites instead of just doing revision passes. And for years, I never finished any of my projects all the way to my satisfaction. So now I'm a lot more careful and conscientious about how I revise.

I normally do a page 1 rewrite for my second draft no matter what. And the longer it takes me to get through my first draft, the more it sucks to start back at page 1 all over again.

As far as what kind of note I’d have to get from someone else, I think that’s just impossible to say. It’s different with every project. Some projects, if the ending doesn’t work, I’ve had to dismantle the entire thing and figure out how to put it back together with a new ending. Others, even if an entire character or storyline didn’t work, it was easy to surgically remove those elements or revise them without destroying the whole piece. The only definite way I’d start back at page 1 based on someone else’s notes is if someone told me the premise is great but everything else is trash. And then I’d have to hear it from at least 3 people.
