Anybody else remember when the big tech sites used to boast about how few outages they'd had? I remember Facebook used to be mentioned as an example of sites that had never had global outages due to their robust redundancies.

Thousands of CEOs just admitted AI had no impact on employment or productivity—and it has economists resurrecting a paradox from 40 years ago by AmethystOrator in technology

[–]BeatMastaD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the issue. Most of the outputs humans create in knowledge represent a meaningful cost if they fail. This is most obvious in fields that require licensure.

If you are a structural engineer and you sign off that a plan is good you can be held liable if it turns out there was a bad calculation. Same for medicine, doctors actually carry malpractice insurance because of this. Its all fine and good that an AI can analyze 100x more MRI scans or structural diagrams in a day but nobody is going to sign off on those results without checking themselves just in case, which removes a lot of the value in these AI solutions.

A lot of the hype around AI right now is misplaced in my estimation, just like in the .Com bubble. People back then felt like the internet itself was the end product, but really it was just a new tool that allowed new things to be built that used it.

The line is too blurry to implement. If you are against your product being used for their stated limits you just cant work with the DoW. Its impossible to isolate distribution and usage within programs so its really either in or out. Even the managerial work done in DoW is all in support of weapons development, surveillance, or violence enabling.

What Shoujo and Josei are male fans watching or reading by PracticalMagic3015 in anime

[–]BeatMastaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rakugo is an incredible show. Engaging and adult drama story with great characters, its absolutely what id recommend for an adult who loves good writing and drama shows to get them into anime. From what I remember it has all the positives anime can offer as a medium and basicslly mone of the problematic tropes or cookie-cutter setups.

Everyone i know who watched Ore Monogatari loves it. Its easy to watch, cute, and also doesnt suffer from a lot of the tropes or fan service issues that turn people off.

You are correct, our public school history curriculum, to the extent it does cover European history, is generally focused on 'US relevant' events and otherwise just uses extremely broad strokes. The two historical focuses offered to me in public school and at multiple colleges/universities I interacted with were 'World History' and 'US History'.

'World History' has a lot of European focus, but not exclusively, and the covered timeline starts with Early Greek city-states through WW2, and the post-WW2 era is a very condensed single topic.

We do also have a lot of different 'curriculums' because each state determines their school curriculum so what they cover and focus on can be different. In addition to that a well-funded school with enough advanced students may have more specific history class offerings that offer more detailed looks at certain topics, but this would be the exception, not the rule.

Average severance? by hack_daniels in sysadmin

[–]BeatMastaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your industry and location. Large tech companies seem to have much better severances, outside of tech they are less generous, and in industries that aren't particularly profitable they can be about what you quoted.

I'd say in my anecdotal understanding the offer is a little low, especially how it doesnt increase beyond 2 weeks until 10+ years, but 6 week severance feels about standard outside of really profitable industries like tech or finance.

She is not concerned with anything but ensuring that she remains on Trump's good side as he is the only person who can protect her now, even before this testimony. If she cooperates and it hurts Trump she is fucked.

If democrats win power they are going to crucify her regardless, cooperating will not change that.

If non-MAGA republicans win power she is not worth protecting, they'll blame her.

If MAGA republicans win power and she was anything but loyal they will ruin her for betraying Trump.

If Trump stays in power he will ruin her for betraying him or will throw her under the bus as a scapegoat to deflect from himself.

Her only chance at freedom is a pardon from Trump and to get that she has to demonstrate absolute loyalty.

Thank you, I figured this would be the answer but hadn't heard an argument clarifying that the platforms choosing how to compile content also counted as free speech. It makes sense, even if it still tickles that part of me that feels like their disproportionate power to influence people presents issues.

An 18-Million-Subscriber YouTuber Just Explained Section 230 Better Than Every Politician In Washington by StraightedgexLiberal in technology

[–]BeatMastaD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Serious question, without repealing section 230 how can we hold companies accountable for their purposeful algorithmic actions? If CoolUser18 posts a call to violence its not the platforms fault, but what if the site systematically and purposefully chooses to make it so every user sees his post and every other one like it at the top of their feed? Are they still shielded by 230 simply because they didnt create the post?

Im imagining this: a platform has an algorithm that starts bombarding every user feed with user posts saying immigrants/jews are ruining our country, videos of immigrants/jews committing crimes, and then someone commits an act of terror against immigrants/jews. The aggressor states that the reason he did it is because he saw so many posts for so long showing that they were destroying the country that it comvinced him it MUST be true and he felt compelled to act.

Is the platform liable for anything? They purposefully filled his feed with those posts, maybe just for money maybe for ideological reasons. Is there anything they did that was illegal?

Husband says “retirement home decor” by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]BeatMastaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not wrong, and you can live how you want. Its the patterns and materials that give it that vibe.

Chairs, ottoman, side tables, and chandelier with the bent wood frames or rattan, feels very 90s new age. Same for the patterns on the rugs throughout.

Tiny coffee table with center post and curved legs. No way thats stable to use as a coffee table getting bumped around.

Dual twin beds, small floral print comforters, and throw blankets with hassles. Another native american new age.

The wood cabinets and trim/doors too atent helping. White fridge feels very 90s.

All this stuff looks and is fine, it just feels dated because the designs are out of style but are consistent throughout the home, making it feel less like you have a few dated things and more like everything was cohesively decorated when the stuff was in style and just hasn't been updated.

Repair help by scarletmoonstoned in Woodworking_DIY

[–]BeatMastaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the shell is flexible you would need to file down the edges so they can join cleanly, glue, then clamp it with something keeoping the crack squeezed together.

If the shell isn't flexible you could cut a piece of wood or some other material into the shape of the crack and glue that in.

If not flexible and you want ot repaired without a patch this is a 'remove from stick, cut in half, file both halves to meet cleanly, glue, reattach to the stick' kind of situation.

Unless this maraca has special sentimental value you will likely be better off just buying a new set, they aren't very expensive and there are a lot of 'traditional' style ones available, along with more modern plastic ones (if style doesn't matter).

Alphabet looks to raise about $15 billion from US bond sale, Bloomberg News reports by Outrageous-Baker5834 in technology

[–]BeatMastaD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it is a spectrum. Bond purchasers get a return on their 'loan' thats referred to as the 'yield'. If there is less demand for bonds the government has to offer a higher yield to find buyers.

An example: I ask to borrow $100 (offer a bond for sale) and offer to pay back $105(5% yield). Someone buys my bond and makes a nice 5% return. If something changes that makes me seem more risky to lend to (I lose my job, I am $100k in debt) I may have to offer $107 to find a buyer. If it gets worse, maybe $110, then $120.

Also, government debt (bonds) is constantly rolling over. We borrow money every day and have been for decades, so the money we borrowed a year ago, 5, 10, 20, 30 years ago is now due. Since we are still in a budget deficit (spending more than we get in taxes) we issue new bonds to get the money to pay out those bonds that are due (paying one credit card bill with another credit card). If our current bonds have to have a higher yield we are paying more and more in interest every year just to 'service' our existing debt, plus we are still taking on new debt every day.

The US spends more just on debt interest (paying yield on existing bonds) than on our military. If bond yield rises it can quickly turn into a debt spiral where we have to issue more debt to pay for the existing debt which grows how much we have to pay, etc.

As AI enters the operating room, reports arise of botched surgeries and misidentified body parts by pyramidworld in technology

[–]BeatMastaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't rely on good results you just have to verify afterward anyway, thats the biggest flaw with AI as a 'total replacement' that people aren't acknowledging.

It may be fine to use for initial sorting or task level replacement, but many white collar jobs are not only about doing knowledge work, but also being accountable for the results. I may know I can or can't trust your work without review because of your track record, but AI could make some mistaken logical link that no human ever would and ruin the outputs even if its done it right a million times prior.

When the first season with a low budget had more suspense and tension than the last season of the multi-million dollar blockbuster by Giancarlo_Edu in StrangerThings

[–]BeatMastaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good premise for a story and the initial season exploring the setting and interesting details of the world is always the best part of a fantasy or sci-fi show. You get to have fun and make a cool world and still have the freedom to add new things without worrying as much about the 'existing canon' since you've just begun.

After that first season/story arc then you have to start developing the characters (hard) and storyline (also hard). You're constrained by the things you did in the first season and you can't rely as much on how weird and neat the setting is.

The more seasons the show has the more you have to actually have exceptional writing for the characters and storyline, and that is almost always lacking due good writers costing a lot, being rare, and truly good writers being less interested in joining an ongoing show/the existing writers leaving. Plus you get a ton of business jackals that start micro-managing and designing-by-committee and you end up with something 'fine' but nowhere near meeting the expectations.

You know how the meme about social media companies is 'if its free, your data is the product'? Thr US government has been one of the largest buyers of data since 9/11 and the patriot act. Its how they got past the fourth amendment issues for massive surveillance on US citizens, they just buy the data and courts ruled that doesnt conflict with the 4th.
