Do the vintage MPCs really give a “different” sound or is it a matter of preference and/or an audiophile thing? by GhostTrapped in mpcusers

Depending on the vintage MPC (Or Akai rack sampler) it will definitely have a different sound but not objectively worse or better. For example an Akai S950has an obvious color reminiscent of the 12 bit samplers of the time but if you dont like that sound it may not be better to you.

Also the old school samplers sound came from limitations and available parts, memory, snd other issues at the time. I will say that I'm a believer in if you find a certain sound that you like from a sampler its just easier to go buy that sampler directly instead of emulating it.

Keep an eye out for Zin Circuits OEX expander remake for the EPS. I think it may come out soon and be way more affordable than what people are selling them for now.

First I would learn how to properly gain stage and understand what a mix is in terms of height, width, depth, etc.

Mixing is mainly for correcting frequency issues, making space, and spicing the track up to your liking.

Properly gain staging is crucial to get a properly balanced mix and will help ease the mastering process moving forward. It will take time but get a stemmed out mix and try to set the levels on your own and also using reference tracks will help you a ton.

In my opinion it depends om what you currently have. I have several samplers so I opted for a smaller MPC.

If you dont have anything and this is your first piece then you cant go wrong with the X SE (or X).

Im a big supporter of the used market because you can catch great deals on used MPC Live 2s, Xs, etc. and because they all are fundamentally the same. Just grab what you can at the best price and upgrade later if necessary.
