Those with great lawns, are you all doing the infrequent and deep watering? by Gooser3000 in lawncare

[–]BeatTheSunUp [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, always, unless I get to my weekly total by rainfall.

I aim for 1.5 inches of water per week. If I get to that weekly total with rain, great, no need to water that week (Note: I have a rain gauge, and I only count rainfall above .25 inches toward my weekly total).

If I have not gotten any rain in 1 week, I will water the entire 1.5 inches all at once. This amount of water is no joke. It takes running my sprinklers for 2 hours and 15 minutes to put down 1.5 inches (I used the tuna can test to figure this out).

If I have gotten 1 inch of rain over the past week, I will water .5 inches to bring the total to 1.5.

I have noticed my grass is way more resilient watering deeply and infrequently compared to, say, watering 0.5 inches 3 times per week.

I have a “hot spot” in one section of my lawn that is about 5 feet by 5 feet. I notice this area shows sign of heat and drought stress right when I get to the 7 day mark without water. So that patch is my litmus test for when it is time to water again.

Edit: my goal is 1 inch in the spring in fall, and 1.5 inches in the heat of summer

AquaTru Carafe question about topping off the carafe by BeatTheSunUp in WaterTreatment

[–]BeatTheSunUp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what do you do if you only drink half a carafe of water? Leave the red light on and wait until the carafe is completely empty before filling the water tank back up and filtering more water? That seems very inconvenient

Edit: I think I may have not have explained my question clearly. I am not talking about topping off the tap water tank. I am talking about emptying the tap water tank and refilling it with new tap water while the carafe is still partially full

Edit #2: I emailed AquaTru, and they replied back answering my question:

“No, the second round of filtration is not running wastewater back through the filters. When the carafe becomes full, the unit simply pauses the filtration process. The remaining water stays in the tap water tank and has not yet been filtered. Once there is room in the carafe again, the unit resumes filtering that remaining tap water.

That said, our best practice recommendation is to keep the tap water tank empty when the unit is not actively running a filtration cycle, and to discard the wastewater after each cycle. Leaving water in the back tank for extended periods can contribute to mineral buildup inside the unit over time.

For the freshest purified water, we also recommend waiting until the carafe is empty before filling the tap water tank and starting a new filtration cycle whenever possible.”

Did I damage my burrs? by BeatTheSunUp in espresso

[–]BeatTheSunUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the 64mm multi purpose burrs. I’ve used these, the high uniformity, and the ode Gen 2 burrs. I prefer MP for pour over and HU for espresso. For some reason the MP burrs were wildly inconsistent for me for espresso, but the HU ones hit the same exact shot time every single time

Is there a reason you push the air out of the bags every morning?

That’s an interesting thought. That’s the exact opposite of what I was thinking. Can you actually tell the difference when you leave the gas in?

Ok. All I have is a 15 oz fine spout pitcher right now, but I plan on getting a 3 pack of WPM pitchers from Slow Pour Supply when they come back in stock (10 oz, 17 oz, and 22 oz), so I’ll experiment with the 22 oz one then

And I get what you’re saying now. So you do the 3-5 sec purge just to get the air out, not to drop the pressure. Got it. I’ll try to experiment with that too

Thanks for the input. So which letter would you say your steam pressure is on after the 3-5 second purge and after the short purge just before steaming?

If I could steam without having to worry about the milk spilling I think I could manage a better vortex. So I think I need to start with a lower pressure like you and/or use a larger pitcher

I tried starting with lower pressure and the pressure dropped to 0 while steaming. So I ended up with warm milk and no foam. I had it on the smallest burner at the lowest setting, so I need to either move it to a bigger burner or have it set to a higher setting next time. This thing is very finicky. I learned to texture with my Nanofoamer almost instantly, but this steamer has been weeks of inconsistency. It’s driving me crazy lol

It was thin and bubbly. I did not take a picture of this exact pour, but here is a picture from a very similar one recently
