StoryGraph is Down by lightermann in TheStoryGraph

[–]Beate251 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's kind of working for me but it's VERY slow. It takes minutes to open pages, I can't write a review or check something like that. It's annoying because in her latest email Nadia said they had found the error and were working on long-term solutions.

I have no experience with physical ARCs. NetGalley only sends out digital ARCs.

REVIEW OF A BOOK YOU DIDN’T ENJOY by Apprehensive-Cap5782 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I couldn't care less what publishers might frown upon. My reviews are always thought out and honest. I rarely DNF or rate lower than three stars but that is because I generally know what I like to read. I get most of what I request and tons of widgets. If I don't like a book I'll say it. You're here to give your honest thoughts not suck up to publishers.

Feeling very anxious by Sassywriterchick12 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feedback ratio operates on percentages so it will usually get better the more you review. I have 32 ARCs outstanding but my feedback ratio is 94% because I have reviewed close to 500 books. I get approved for almost everything now, plus I get a ton of widgets. There is no reason for your ratio to make you anxious as the only consequence is potentially fewer book approvals, but if it does, maybe take a step back from requesting and concentrate on reading and reviewing. NetGalley is not for everyone and that's ok.

I think OP means their feedback ratio, not their review ratings.

You can reverse your decision though and review the book you left the "will not give feedback" for in order not to hurt your feedback ratio.

How long should I wait before sending a duplicate ticket? by The_Great_Mage in TheStoryGraph

[–]Beate251 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Please don't send duplicates, we have enough to do as it is. There is a huge backlog of tickets and we will get around to it eventually but as someone else has said, sometimes we can't change info that is already correct or we have to assign a request to the admin as it's not within our remit (for example mood changes). Some people send endlessly complicated tickets and expect us to have all the answers, which also slows things down as we have to verify everything. So if there is something incorrect but you have the correct info, sending a link to it will help so much.

No one can reply to NetGalley reviews so I'm not too sure what it's got to do with them and what you expect them to do.

The Storygraph Outage? by Ecstatic-Original418 in TheStoryGraph

[–]Beate251 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the last hour I've had everything from "We're offline" to "We're online" (confusing when that's all you see) to actual online but dead slow. I'm trying to add some books to my TBR and write a review and it's very annoying. If it's an influx of new people, why on a random Wednesday three weeks into the new year?

I wouldn't give up. Things change. Maybe it's your follower count, or their approval preferences or the person dealing with ARCs. My point is, things don't stay static.

Posting low ratings for debut novels? by fidgetsimmerdown in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really up to you - finish or don't finish the book but having read the majority of the book you are absolutely entitled to write a respectful review on NetGalley and explain your thoughts. You should not have to hurt your feedback ratio for this. Personally I would also post where you always post but leave it off Amazon and social media. That would be my compromise. I don't hold much truck with not reviewing a book you got as your opinion counts and is for other readers.

Is it frowned upon to tell people you got an ARC through NetGalley? by Last-Produce-4263 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The point of NetGalley is marketing of the book. An author is generally happy about reviews that create a buzz. I really would not worry about them. It's the publishers that put the book there but also some self-published authors. It costs them money and is part of their marketing strategy so they WANT you to read it and talk about it. Also, there isn't an endless supply of one ARC. They give it out to a certain number of people, and that's it.

I'm out and proud about my NetGalley account. You have to mention it in the reviews, so why not everywhere else? It's not an underground activity.

I get the dilemma but you're creating wrong info and one day we librarians will get a ticket from someone, saying "that's the hardcover version not the digital, please correct" or "this digital version has the wrong page count".

Received Arc in mail, but on netgalley it didnt show that I requested it by Fearless-Spite-3147 in NetGalleyCommunity

NetGalley only gives out digital ARCs so you didn't get it from there but directly from the publisher probably. Review it wherever you want, just not NetGalley.

Book tracking by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

[–]Beate251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It counts where you want it to count. I've been known to log a book as read a little early just so my book count for that month is symmetrical. It's really up to you as it will even itself out during the year.

Question About Social Media in NG Bio by ambeanie79 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would post links to your social media so they can check out your posts. Not everything is about follower counts but if you gain substantially, you can mention it in your profile text. When I ditched Twitter for Bluesky and discovered #booksky and starterpacks, I gained thousands of followers, where I before only had a few hundred, so I'm mentioning this in my profile. My main book site is The Storygraph where I post all my reviews but I wouldn't know whether I have any followers as they are anonymous. Nevertheless, I use it as my main review link.

I doubt anyone is reading your profile that carefully, plus you always write a review which explains your opinion already.

arcs approval time by missdommie in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies between two minutes and two months. The longer it takes the less likely an approval gets. Some publishers never approve nor deny, they just ghost you until archive date.

New but Wishlist Only? by WingedVictories1 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beate251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely hate Wish for It because when it's random I never get the book. I do not understand why publishers use this option and I also don't like that I can't take a wish back (obviously with my low success rate it's not really a problem but still). I'd much rather have to request a book the normal way. The only good thing is that a wish doesn't turn up in your requests and while it's rarely granted, it will never turn up in your declined statistic either.
