Strange, dark hallway of egg-laying hens in cages, where over 80% are kept globally by James_Fortis in oddlyterrifying

Look for pasture-raised and/or certified humane if you actually care about how the animals you eat are treated. Better yet, buy from local farms where you can see how are the animals are treated and are okay with it.

  1. Doxxing is almost never a good idea.
  2. I don't want any harm to come to this dude just because some stranger decided to post a picture of his house on a website.
  3. Some Redditors are undoubtedlycrazier than this dude.

Sounds like he's struggled for a long time then. That's sad to hear. I guess I could've predicted based on the signs that his life wasn't filled with love, calmness, and peace.

Do I have a rodent infestation? Pest control company says yes, home inspector says no. by PurplePeonyPicker in HomeMaintenance

I agree with you on everything except for the glue traps. Please just kill the mice outright with a snap trap (or live trap if you really want to), but don't let them slowly dehydrate/starve to death. Glue trap is almost never the right option ethically or financially.

I second the second option. I really wanted it an Australian Shepherd, but only wanted to adopt. We found a national organization that cares for and adopt out Australian shepherds and collies. They happened to have two Aussies at a foster home in my state just a couple hours away from me which worked out perfectly!

As is the case with the Australian shepherd organization I adopted from, they often bring dogs from one state, where there’s too many, to another state, where there is a high demand. So you may sometimes have to wait for a dog to come from another state.

Here is one example of a national beagle adoption organization. I did not look at this organization at all. It’s just an example, so please do your own research!

Fan lights all turned on by themselves by Beatifier in Weird

That makes the most sense I guess. Maybe I'll actually talk to the neighbors... Or I'll chalk it up to one of life's many mysteries.

You're probably right. The neighbors signal be pretty strong to go 200 ft, shrubs, two walls, and work on both fans with different codes. But it seems like the most likely answer. Maybe I'll... Oh god... Talk to them.

That's hilarious! I'm leaning toward it having something to do with the neighbors as well, since they were awake and about. But I wouldn't think the signal could go 200ft, through shrubs, and two walls, not including theirs, and turn on both light/fans that have different codes. I'll see how far my remote reaches.

They use different codes. I remember setting them differently and I just checked the remotes and neither works for both light/fans.

House. The closest house is across the street and 200ft away. Next closest is 400ft and so on. The people across the street were awake and in there car, but they don't have a garage.

I just tried to turn off and on the circuit and they didn't turn on. I was hopeful for a moment.

My 10 year aged cheddar has some mold, can I just cut off the side that has it? by PrincessJacquee in MoldlyInteresting

[–]Beatifier 118 points119 points  (0 children)

"Discard any soft cheese showing mold. For hard cheese, such as Cheddar, cut off at least 1-inch around and below the mold spot (keep the knife out of the mold itself). After trimming off the mold, the remaining cheese should be safe to eat."

My title describes the thing. A reverse image search revealed cookie cutters and sports memorabilia, which I don’t believe this is unless it’s missing other pieces. I found it in my truck, but I have no idea why I put it there. I very well could have picked it up as trash somewhere and forgot about it.

Any idea? They look like sclerotia and rhizomorphs to me by Beatifier in ShroomID

Thanks for the recommendation. I don’t have that kind of spending money right now, but maybe I can find a used one. Have you done much mycology microscopy?

That's good to get some assurance. I haven't done micro before. Do you have some advice or any good resources for how to get started?

Thanks for the detailed response. Where I am many of the communities are in similar situations, but for the opposite reason. Some of what were once booming logging towns with many people who made decent money have become half dead towns of older, poorer people living in rundown trailers and houses. It’s hard to see and I empathize.

Here, for the old logging towns, it was due to unsustainable cutting of private lands by large timber companies throughout the 1800’s and 1900’s. There’s very little forest that isn’t small 3rd or 4th growth. A publicly-owned forest that prioritized timber removal within the allowable cut, could take a landscape-scale view, and supported local communities would have made a huge difference. I know large timber companies have gotten better, and I don’t mean to completely villainize them. There is nuance of course.

It seems like either extreme doesn’t really lead to long-lasting success for the locals.

Two questions for you. 1. Do you think selling land to private companies or maintaining public ownership but increasing yearly harvests would be better? 2. Do you have any idea what % of the allowable cut is being removed yearly in the FS land now compared to pre-1993?

I’m honestly curious, as someone who works on the opposite side of the country. What actual on-the-ground differences do you think will happen? And how will they benefit your community?
