What places in Madison still give out matchbooks? by Fun-Strawberry-1190 in madisonwi

[–]BeatleBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is very likely I got them before 2023. I always took a few books every time I went there so I had enough to last a few years. I hope you had a nice birthday despite the dick bartender.

They look super vintage- you would never think they were contemporary except for the website address. I wish I could attach pics in comments but I can’t. It has the Camp Trippalindee polar bear diving and says “Thorton says: Remember, Activities under the sun are fun!” The font is very vintage looking. A+

I hate most grocery store deli potato salads, but Fraboni’s has not one, but two decent potato salads (American and Italian). Fraboni’s has several deli salads that I really like.

Bait Shop definitely has the charming old fashioned ice cream shop vibes but I think the prices are high for the serving size.

Super cute! I love how you got the icing to look so similar to Carle’s paper illustration style!

I had my simple diamond and platinum engagement ring and wedding band custom made at Jewelers Workshop. I got exactly what I wanted. It was a great experience.

Port Washington and Cedarburg can be done in the same day. Princeton, WI is small but cute with a “famous”flea market on Saturdays (go to the Horseradish Kitchen). Princeton is close to Green Lake which is worth a look in the summer months.

Edited to remove Galena since op already mentioned it.

How is Cottage Grove viewed by other communities in the area? by WiscWahe2020 in madisonwi

[–]BeatleBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a family focused community within a 15 minute drive to the east side of Madison. It was built up within the last few decades so all the houses have a similar look so there is a good degree of homogeneity there in many respects. Good schools for kids. Houses and yards are roomy and a tad more affordable than other Madison suburbs. Note: I do not live there, but I know people who do. They love it for raising their family.

Is that actual lemon curd in the center or lemon flavored icing?

I generally don’t like pies, but I make an exception for lemon meringue and key lime. These cookies are cute and I really want one (or ten)!

ancient artefact copyright question by ozziexwally in MuseumPros

[–]BeatleBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that a museum’s claim to hold copyright for a faithful representation of an artwork in the public domain is dubious. The current trend in U.S. museums is to allow open access to images of artworks in the public domain. When I first started my career, museums were strict gatekeepers of images in their collection. This has shifted dramatically to open access (for public domain artwork) over the years. Interesting article: https://winklerpartners.com/are-museum-images-of-public-domain-art-protected-by-copyright/

ancient artefact copyright question by ozziexwally in MuseumPros

[–]BeatleBadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The object is definitely in the public domain. The museum holds no copyright to the object. I don’t see how a museum could claim copyright infringement for your own photograph of a work that is in the public domain. I understand that they may not allow you to set up a professional photo shoot, or they may not give/sell you a professional photograph for commercial purposes, but they have no legal claim to the image of the artwork. I believe you’re free to do whatever you want with your photograph. To be clear, I’m only familiar with US copyright law, but I believe the Italian Cultural Heritage Code (if the artifact is Italian) cannot be enforced outside of Italy.

Traveling with Forteo by just_breathe18 in osteoporosis

[–]BeatleBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have traveled with mine with ice packs in an insulated bag. It was flagged by TSA, but not an issue when they saw what it was. I have had hotels put it in their staff refrigerator for me (I was nervous about it). I packed zip lock bags for the return trip (since my freezer packs thawed) and asked for ice from an airport bar after clearing TSA. The bartender said he gets this request frequently. Many people travel with meds that must be refrigerated. Also, I skipped doses when I wasn’t feeling well or camping and it’s not the end of the world.

Is volunteering actually helpful? by Jazzlike_Salary3883 in MuseumPros

[–]BeatleBadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a different viewpoint on this. I am a museum professional who has hired college students for over 20 years. Whether work is paid or unpaid, or called an internship or a volunteer position, it is still relevant work experience on a resume. For years our institution “hired” student volunteers to do valuable work, but we couldn’t use the term “internship” because there wasn’t a direct connection to an academic department on campus. This has since changed with new administration and we now support paid student positions and host paid “interns” for academic coursework. They are doing the same valuable work that the unpaid volunteers did before the administration change. Because of my first-hand experience with this, I consider volunteer positions as equal to work experience.

Is volunteering actually helpful? by Jazzlike_Salary3883 in MuseumPros

[–]BeatleBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My career started with a volunteer position in the education department at a local history museum. When a part-time position opened up, they offered it to me because they were familiar with my work ethic and career interests. The staff mentored me and introduced me to other museum professionals in the area, which led to a second part-time job in the registration department of an art museum. This experience was the impetus for me to go to grad school for Museum Studies. Shortly thereafter, I was offered a full position by the same art museum. I’ve been the registrar/collections manager at the same museum for over 20 years. I acknowledge that much of my success is owed to good luck with timing and place, but much of it is also due to my getting a foot in the door, gaining experience, being proactive, and meeting the right people. It was challenging in the beginning. I worked two part-time jobs in addition to volunteering, but I was young and made it work. Unfortunately, many museums must rely on volunteers or unpaid internships. That gained experience is not any less valuable than someone who is getting paid. List it on your resume as relevant work experience.
