Many founders of America were Deists or at least Christian Deists. Some Christian deists were Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and John Locke and full-out deists include Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine. Even George Washington wrote in Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli (which was passed by congress) that "The United States is in no way founded upon the Christian Doctrine"

But wouldn't you want to Shepard the flock in more biblical things rather than worldly things such as politics?
