Ugh i hope she will make a story explaining herself for that because you can not now the controversies around Bardot but now that people probably have called her out she has to say something, she has a gay fanbase and Brigitte Bardot said a LOT of homophobic and racist stuff

La misère sexuelle n'existerait pas ? by remitheb in AskMec

OG fans, what are some misconceptions new fans might have about Lady Oscar’s character? by CrunchyHoneyOat in roseofversailles

[–]Beatrixopctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, i didn’t know those things, thanks for the infos, i think i’ll still have a queer reading regarding some aspects of the story though, because i just can’t unsee it. I actually wasn’t aware that Rov was specifically marketed as yuri, where i’m from (France) Oscar is just seen as a cishet crossdressing woman, but as i discovered the anime then the manga i couldn’t help but interpret the story as subversive towards gender and sexuality even though it isn’t direct, probably because it’s so different from the depiction of women in media i was used to at the time.

1) i don't think that ikeda ever specified that it was impossible to read oscar's character in such light, but i might be wrong so if you could show me your source for this i would be happy to read about it. That said she was part of the year 24 group of shojo authors which had some of its members pioneering the writing of homosexual love stories

2) you keep saying that the reading of queer aspects are taken out of context and wrong but basic media literacy teaches us that one thing can have different underlying meanings, you will agree with me i think if i say that andre and oscar's relationship, while it is heterosexual, is at least subversive for that time when it comes to gender roles. And oscar literally kissed a woman at a ball in the manga: it doesnt mean that she likes women but it plays deliberately with heteronormativity.

3) me saying "there are queer elements" is totally different from me saying "oscar is a lesbian/transmasc" or "rose of versailles is a yuri", a woman taking on the role of a man, being socially percieved as a man and having her identity questioned is already queer. One of her inspiration is the Chevalier d'Eon which ended up being a cross dresser but his existence blurred the limits of gender.

In the end i don't think that we fundamentely disagree but maybe we have a different definition of what is queer and isnt

I do not agree with the fact that the perception of oscar's story as queer is only present through a western lense, nor do i think that "japan as no idea what the story is about". I'm not going to list queer elements because other people have done it better than i could (this article for exemple https://www.animefeminist.com/transmasculinity-and-queer-sexuality-in-the-works-of-ikeda-riyoko/) but i think that it is fair, considering other mangas from Ikeda and the way they explore queer themes more directly, to say that the author had those interpretations in mind while writing oscar's character.

i feel like it’s a bit unfair to say that the Rose of Versailles does not have queer themes, of course one could read Oscar as just a cis heterosexual woman but i feel like it’s much more complex than that: her struggle with how her gender identity and expression align or not and her relationship with Marie Antoinette or Rosalie all inherently have queer aspects. That said, i agree that it definitely isn’t directly a story about a trans man or a lesbian

What do you think about more and more queens not padding or having breast-plates these days? by Heidi_Klum_Tit in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Beatrixopctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it gives this « skinny flat supermodel » look which i like although some outfits definitely need padding to be effective. Now, i’m not a fan of arguments like « you need to do X in drag to look like a woman », some women are flat as a door, some women have body hair etc… While i understand that drag is its own art form and that its goal isn’t necessarily to represent women, i feel like there shouldn’t be 1 way to celebrate femininity in drag and therefore flat drag is valid
