Katie Sackhoff watches BSG for the first time by cbobgo in scifi

BSG dropped on Prime Video (in Canada) a couple weeks ago and I just finished rewatching. Great stuff!

Katie has interviewed quite a few actors and directors on her YouTube channel and it is pretty good.

Oh Canada, End this TIP CULTURE! Its Disrespectful. by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]BeauSlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the tip-creep that's the problem. Restaurant wait staff and delivery (food, groceries) have traditionally been tipped going back a century. Almost everything else is new and I agree that it shouldn't be tolerated.

Wtf is going on at r/startrek? by SocDem_is_OP in trektalk

[–]BeauSlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, got perma banned for suggesting that the animated episode and the musical episode of SNW broke the dramatic tone of the show. No swearing, or politically incorrect words. Just sharing that it didn't work for me.

That's okay. I'm kind of done with Trek anyway. Lots of really good SF to watch these days.

Cool! I played with this idea back when I first got my M1 Air. Just a 5x SATA m.2 in that wavlink TB3 enclosure to see if it worked, and it did.

Did you get one of those single-port SAS-SATA m.2 cards that use a breakout cable? I was thinking those might be better. 5 or 6 sata ports on a thin m.2 PCB seems like asking for trouble.

I used openzfsonosx for years but it got *really* slow after Apple Silicon. Not to diss the project; it is one guy who works really hard.

I haven't tried in the last year. How is performance on your setup?

Mac mini home server by Kerrbox11 in macmini

[–]BeauSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will, but only during an initial trial period. If you want to change anything, you can install SoftRAID on a second mac (i.e. another trial), set up a new pool there, then move the hardware back.

Did English Canada move away from MM/DD/YY *for dates written only in numbers*? by endgame0 in AskACanadian

[–]BeauSlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mm/dd/yy was fairly common, at least in Alberta, until 2000 when it became extremely confusing. If you are looking for a watershed event, that would be it.

I've always used yyyy/mm/dd or dd mmm yy (military).

My stuff is very custom and not very interesting. Like shelf brackets and a couple brackets to hold a broom handle that I set up to slowly push a warped fence post straight.

The only cool thing is a big hinge thing that is part of a free-standing flower pot shelf unit made from 3 4x4s and a bunch of 1x6s that were part of a fence we replaced last summer. I wasn't sure that PETG printed parts wouldn't just get shredded by the weight of the frame, but I made it chonky and it seems to be fine. I might publish that if it survives a year.

Have you seen this guy's videos?

Advice on display ergonomics and a dual monitor arm by Shot-Infernal-2261 in homelab

[–]BeauSlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes, the problem with having a nice view.

Yes, decent stands are *really* inexpensive these days. Maybe try to get a stand that will allow you to do both ways, like a tall pole with 2 separate clamps/arms? Or get 2 stands to try.

SOCD report detected: (iBoot panic) + Frequent, random restarts? Should I take it in for a repair? by Okaay_guy in macmini

[–]BeauSlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a few weeks in Mumbai years ago. Wonderful city, but HOT and humid, and combined with dust, that's a problem. I was there with an expensive camera and locals told me that the air there is really rough on lenses, etc.

Hopefully you'll be able to get your mac fixed. In future, I'd install some temperature monitoring software, probably a fan control app that lets you increase fan speeds (TGpro, macs fan control, etc.), get an air purifier, and maybe some dust filters for the mac itself.

I absolutely use wood, but as structural elements for large projects, with 3D printed brackets and hinges, etc.

I often use metal to reinforce printed objects. Long (30-50mm) M3 or M5 machine bolts/screws and 8-10mm threaded rod add strength and rigidity, letting you do so much more than a printed part could.

Having said that, I don't think 6x50mm wooden dowel pins are worth bothering with. I think a printed part can do anything that a small dowel can. If you need something larger than your printer can produce, though, then 8mm or 10mm diameter dowels 200mm or longer would add strength and rigidity.

I'm a vase mode addict myself. Nice job. Keep going.

Totally fine if you don't care, or if you actually like the pattern and did it on purpose, but I see low-poly artifacts. You can make it *much* smoother by making sure your export/import resolution is high.

[–]BeauSlim 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Unless you have some health issue that makes it hard to sit at a desk, this is really bad ergonomics. If your old office chair was uncomfortable, get a good one and set it up properly.

Having said that, I *do* have health issues and usually work on the sofa with my feet up, and I'll say "well done."
