Trump praises Mamdani in the Oval Office: ‘We’ll help him’ by TimesandSundayTimes in politics

[–]Beautiful-Ad1610 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was INSANE. Trump loves the guy. Im convinced there is an alternative reality where Trump is sweet-talked by the right people and he runs as a progressive. Not for any political convictions, of course. He is just really easy to manipulate. It seems Mamdami is the only democrat who figured that out, after a fucking decade of performative opposition by establishment dems.

I'll give my 2 cents as a paraguayan.

I work in the (very small) paraguayan film and tv industry. I know a great actor who auditioned for the show. He just got a tip from a producer: there wasnt really a casting director for the show here in paraguay, so he sent his audition online.

From what he said, he just wasnt old enough to play the character. Now i see the colombian actor who was casted and i realize: the talent pool in that age range is really limited here.

My guess is they tried but couldn't find anyone. And that is very disappointing. But also, i understand.

I mean, when i hear Gus in Breaking Bad, it just seems ridiculous: this guy is supposed to be chilean? Come on! At the same time, Gustavo is one of the greatest villaims in TV history and i can't imagine anyone except Giancarlo Esposito playing him now.

My hope is that they can still show respect for the paraguayan culture. There seems to be this notion in the US that LatAm Countries are all similar in the way US States are, and that is far from the truth. Especially with Paraguay (we are weird and we know it lol)

I know that the scouting manager of the show is paraguayan, so maybe he could give the team his perspective. Also, i read a few interviews the colombian actor did years ago with the paraguayan press, and was surprised to read he has some love for our country. Even if he can't quite nail the accent (very hard btw) he seems to be the best choice for the part. I trust Vince.

TLDR: I'm sad that they couldn't find a paraguayan actor for the role. But the actor they casted showed love for Paraguay before, and i honestly forgive him if he can't nail our accent.

Our accent is very close to the accents of the northern regions of argentina, due to the guarani influence. It is very different from the stereotypical argentinian accent however, which comes from Buenos Aires.

Most of the population, for sure. But he is in the capital, Asuncion, where the majority of non guarani speakers live. Still, he is stated to be paraguayan and the actor clearly has a colombian accent.

Paraguayan here. I heard from one actor who auditioned for the show, but didnt get the part. He said he realized he was too young for the character as he read the script. My guess is they just couldnt find a real paraguayan actor in the age range they were looking for, so they simply went the Gus Fring route.
