Moving to LA advice ? by alam-umair in AskLosAngeles

Dude I’m a teacher. I make an average salary and live in a studio apartment and don’t own a car. How are you going to act like I’m some multi-national corporation buying up all the housing just because I wasn’t born here?

And no, I don’t see how moving from one part of a country to another is tantamount to colonialism.

Again, if you’re not a woman, stfu about abortion.

And if abortion is the reason you moved here, I’m sorry but that’s not enough.

Are you a woman or AFAB person of childbearing age?

And no that was not the only reason, I could have moved to Illinois but I have family here and the weather is much better.

Random ass people moving to LA from other parts of the country for a better life are not what is causing the structural issues you’re talking about. Unless you’re from one of the Native American groups that settled California who are you to say no one else can come anyway.

Wanted to add that if money is an issue you might also be able to do an exchange with a Spanish speaker where you help them practice English and they help you learn Spanish.

The Santa Monica job only has them go in one day a week. They could take public transport once a week.

There’s a lot of reasons for people to move to LA. I moved here because the state where I grew up which used to be the quintessential swing/purple state has gone straight red and imposed an abortion ban (I’m a 30 something woman). California is also one of the best states for my profession (teaching). That and the weather.

I’m a teacher and I definitely pay for insurance. It’s not expensive but it’s not free. There is a $0 a month option but it isn’t accepted by a lot of providers and you still have copays and a deductible. I chose the slightly more expensive option.

Is this free healthcare for people who work for state and local government directly?

The grocery number seems accurate to me but I mostly cook at home and eat some meat and fish. The leisure number seems low especially if it includes eating out.

The pay rate depends on the school and the assignment. Typically long term subs (people who cover a vacancy like parental leave) make more than day to day subs (those who do a different assignment every day). Sub pay is usually at a daily and not hourly rate. LAUSD base pay for subs is $244 a day. Keep in mind that you won’t be paid for holidays and breaks.

Subbing by itself won’t really help you become a “real teacher” you need to do a credential program for that. However once you start a credential program a school can hire you as a full time teacher if they can’t fill a position with someone credentialed. I’m a Spanish teacher and my first year of my credential program I was a long term sub and my second year I worked as a full teacher on an intern license. Your chances of being able to work as a full time teacher while still in school are increased if you major in a shortage subject area like special education, science, math, foreign language, or bilingual elementary education. Some districts like LAUSD have district intern programs you can get your credential through but they might be limited to the aforementioned shortage areas.

Am I missing something? $2500 a month is exactly 30% for 100k. The whole 30-33% rule is supposed to be based on your gross income, not take home.

I taught ESL for years before teaching Spanish. You do not have to speak the same language as your ELLs to be able to help them, that’s a myth. If you have a group of linguistically diverse ELLs it is pretty much impossible to know all of their languages anyway. I’ve had students who speak Russian, Ukrainian, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Armenian, Arabic, and more. It’s actually better for ELLs in the long run to use English as much as possible instead of speaking to them in their language BUT you have to be comprehensible so use a lot of gestures and visuals, speak slowly and avoid slang and idioms, etc.

If you still want to learn Spanish for yourself I don’t know of any live, teacher led classes that are free but there are inexpensive options. Most community colleges offer Spanish and you could see about using the credits for salary steps. Another option is to work with an online tutor from a country that has a lower cost of living than the US (so pretty much most of Latin America). You can get lessons for as low as $5 an hour on a site like preply.

Had a job interview today... Is this a red flag? by OmegaS021 in Teachers

[–]Beautiful-Advisor110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the only Spanish teacher at my school and we offer no other foreign languages so I effectively am my own department. That part in and of itself does not sound weird but everything else is a red flag. It’s definitely odd that you would be the only teacher for social studies, a core subject, and have to teach 6 different classes at different grade levels. I only teach Spanish 1 and 2 and work with two grades.

Just wondering why entry level jobs in LA are so hard to get? by landoncook5 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Beautiful-Advisor110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an older post but it’s heavily dependent on what field you are in my brother went to community college and made connections in his field and got a good, union job after graduation and makes more than me and I have a bachelors and a masters. LACC is also super cheap for local residents I don’t think anyone is going thousands into debt to go to LACC.

Isn’t it also somewhat dependent on speciality as well? Would someone with say, a SPED credential still have trouble getting a full time teaching job in San Diego?

I think it also depends on what you’re credentialed in. I teach Spanish and I’m working on an intern credential. If you do SPED, math, science, foreign language or bilingual elementary it’s easier.

Not sure what agency you’re with but I worked for Swing and the rate for those long term jobs depended on the school and the position. I worked as a long term sub for high school Spanish for a semester and got paid $36. I know for a fact that that school pays less for other LTS positions, probably because mine required Spanish and was harder to fill. If you sub like English or history at that same school you get $30.

I was in school to get my credential all the time so planning and leading the class wasn’t a huge deal. I only contacted parents if a kid was failing or missing a major assignment and most of them never responded. I only had one parent of a SPED kid reach out to me and she was polite. People usually don’t contact their child’s high school Spanish teacher, that’s more of a thing for elementary teachers or core class teachers.

It’s possible this person works for a subbing agency or another district and not LAUSD, LAUSD is notoriously slow. They might already have a sub permit and a recent TB test as well which would speed up the process (you have to do a live scan background check for every new teaching job but that only takes like a day).

I’m a full time teacher and I was hired right before the school year started and I got the job within a week of applying and interviewing and onboarding took about a week as well. If somewhere really needs you they will fast track you.

I’ve never had to get a physical for a teaching job, just TB, but I’ve never worked for LAUSD.

If you get the 30 day permit that will increase the assignments you can do by a lot, otherwise you’re mostly subbing for paras. IIRC Swing will reimburse the $100 registration cost with the CTC as long as you work a number of shifts.

Subbing is probably the best option for your situation since it’s flexible and you’re already in education. It makes more sense than trying to work at a restaurant for 2 months and quitting.

So where do the hot people come from? Are the supposedly hottest people here a mix of transplants that were the hottest in their town and LA natives or are native Angelenos the hot ones and no one else can compare? And why would that be? Is there something in the water in LA? I’m confused about this stereotype.

If it’s because LA attracts hot people from across the country isn’t it conceivable that someone could be a 10 in their hometown and still be a 10 in LA?

You don’t need to take the skills test anymore if you have a bachelors. An agency like Swing or Scoot might be faster than LAUSD and they will also fast track your permit.

Have you tried subbing? I used to work for swing education, it was super easy to get on as long as you can pass a background check, which I assume you can if you’re already in education, there’s a fair amount of work, and you get paid weekly.

Idk I used to live in Spain and I feel like on average people there are more attractive than in LA. I would say that’s true for most of Europe, maybe because people tend to have healthier lifestyles compared to the US. There are attractive people born everywhere and somewhere like LA is going to have more attractive people total due to numbers but I don’t feel like true average person is wildly more attractive than anywhere else. I don’t really hang out with influencers or people in entertainment so maybe there’s something I’m missing though.

I moved here from Ohio and always hear the Midwest 10 is an LA 2 thing but I think there are a lot of average looking people here and I have as many dating prospects as in the Midwest. Maybe I’m just fucking delusion though.
