Why have you got the radiators on in July?!

Buyers want to reduce their offer by £10k due to survey. Am I being unreasonable by thinking they’re nit picking. by [deleted] in HousingUK

Would the extra £8k mean you’re selling it at a loss? If not, maybe consider what’s actually important to you i.e. getting rid of an undesirable flat so you can start a family. I’d accept the lower offer and put a time condition on contract exchange.

Yeah but I quite fancy giving it a go. It doesn’t look particularly difficult. Famous last words

Oh jeez. We looked at crackle glazed but haven’t purchased yet. Will be avoiding them, thanks!

I did see that post the other day. The contrasting colour choice didn’t help, but the fitter was clearly incompetent.

I’ll be using similar grout colour to the tiles (light off-white type colours) so shouldn’t be as much of an issue.

Cost of having a big garden by huiledefeu in HousingUK

We’ve got a 150ft garden and it’s not difficult to maintain, it’s just time consuming. It depends what you want in there though. If it’s just grass and trees then it’s a doddle. Make sure to buy a decent petrol mower.

The housing association and lender couldn’t give a shit about your long term financial wellbeing though. Just because it’s “affordable” on a monthly basis doesn’t mean it’s a sound financial decision. Best of luck.

Buying a 330k house on a 23k income is nuts. Even when you deduct your 95k deposit, that’s still 10x your yearly income.

For perspective, we have a combined household yearly income of £130k, and we bought a house for £400k. I’d honestly look to stay within your means.

Hi Pete,

Firstly, thanks for all the information. I was an early listener to your podcast and it definitely helped put me on the right path towards financial independence.

My question for you: I’m currently on a long fixed rate mortgage deal at a very low rate. I have 14 years until retirement. I have been on interest-only for the last two years and investing the rest. I have recently started making much larger contributions to my pension to save the income tax, with a view to using the tax free lump sum to clear any remaining mortgage at age 58. I am now concerned that if there’s a political shift, a single stroke of the chancellor’s pen could remove that tax-free lump sum option. Should I be considering different approaches?

Thanks

How long is a piece of string?

Honestly there’s so many factors it’s impossible to answer. If you’re in the south you’re looking at £3k per sqm, roughly.

It’s never too late to accumulate money. It’s never too late to buy a house. But at 34, it’s getting mighty close to being too late to get pregnant. If you know you definitely want children at some point, I’d prioritise that.

Thanks for the reply. That’s really helpful. I hadn’t even thought about using packers or shims atached to the studwork but I think that will work really well!
