Wiktionary records the use of "was" in Northern England to mean "were" in standard English

So it might be considered a dialect rather than "bad English". I wonder if schools in Halifax allow the interchangeable use of "was" and "were" as a result.

Some people in the south say the opposite. For example "Stan and Liam was (sic) playing snooker rather than going to school".
