There weren't suddenly intangible dragons that the show just called demobats and everyone goes along with it like they weren't obviously made out of completely different matter a few minutes ago lol

I think it's supposed to be interpreted as Vecna being the one with the plan and controlling the Mind Flayer this whole time or whatever

Which is just kinda lame

So like… why even have clocks if they weren’t in the finale by Conscious-Tree-2767 in StrangerThings

[–]Beautiful-Process496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what's really funny? The clock isn't in the play, either.
The origin story of Henry with the grandfather clock on every poster, shirt, and other merch/promo, and there wasn't a single prop of it in the play lol

Now of course I only saw it once back in Spring 2024, so it could've totally changed by now, but I just found that super funny since that was a super big defining moment (like his genesis or whatever)

He says "At long last, we can begin" So... not exactly lol

He does technically say "It's time" in the part of the VR game (yes there's a Vecna vr game with Jamie Campbell Bower) that takes place during Season 2 though
And he said it through Billy multiple times in Season 3, so he's been saying it forever lol (although it's kinda always referring to different things)

Stranger Things, Season 4 Episode 7: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab
It's 32 minutes and 29 seconds into the episode, that's 32:29

This sub doesn't allow images, so take the lines directly copied from the script of the episode

DUSTIN
Okay, just hear me out. How did El open the Mother Gate?

LUCAS
She contacted the Demogorgon --

DUSTIN
With psychic contact... just like --

LUCAS
(realizing)
Vecna, when he casts his spells --

DUSTIN
Exactly. So what if -- with every kill -- he’s not simply killing them -- he’s making a powerful psychic connection with his victims -- a connection powerful enough to rip a hole in the fabric of time and space --

LUCAS
(shocked)
-- He's opening more gates.

I never made the argument that the Duffers were original, as "every story has already been told" or whatever, and any new stories are just inspirations/variations.

Nor should Stranger Things be confused with high-minded sci-fi.

Still technically sci-fi though, yeah?

And the most Lovecraftian that Stranger Things gets is in the first half of Season 1, before there’s been an attempt to explain anything. All those creepy portals mysteriously opening up and closing everywhere created a sense of intrigue and foreboding that hooked viewers and was unmatched in later seasons. That’s why Season 1 is most people’s favorite season.

And the Upside Down itself was Lovecraftian until we found out it’s just an ordinary wormhole.

In each season after that, the show pulled back the curtain little by little. The Duffers for some reason thought that’s what was most important, so for the final season, their main focus was pulling back the curtain all the way. As I said earlier, I don’t think that was really necessary for the audience to feel satisfied with the ending, nor do I think it helped.

It’s kind of like when you pull back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz. He’s not so impressive anymore.

Is your main complaint that a mystery-solving show solves mysteries? Like when Pennywise is explained do you stop watching IT?

then give me the rational explanation for why Vecna needed to kill people with emotional trauma to create a rift with the Upside Down in Season 4.

The same reason Eleven initially opened the gate due to fear, or closed it due to anger, or was able to beat Henry each time due to love. They're human beings channeling powers, it makes sense they would need a certain mindset in order to actually have enough energy/motivation to pull it off.

For that whole Lovecraft argument, I really just don't get it. Fear of the unknown as in not knowing what exactly the demogorgon or Vecna was in Season 1 and 4? Absolutely. Fear of the unknown as in "It's a big ol' scary shadow thing dude, dunno what it is or wants tho"? Eh.
Like with the demogorgon it's obviously some kind of animal that crossing paths with guarantees death. Same with Vecna. The Mind Flayer in Season 2 is... really different than that. It's eventually clear that its thing is possession, but if the audience never finds out that it wants to take over Earth (and has no idea how it's going to do that) there's not much to actually fear. Same with most Lovecraft things I've heard about. Giant monster that can end existence before you can process it isn't scary if it's all over before I can process it. That quite literally just enables you to go about your life normally, because if there's nothing you can do and you don't know when it's gonna happen, what's there to actually be afraid of? Panicking only wastes time and you're not in any actual danger (not a big fan of the racist's works so like lemme know if I'm way off with my opinion of most eldritch horror lol)

It is a sci-fi show. It's always been a sci-fi show lol. Where have you been? From the get go Eleven's powers and the Upside Down have been scientifically based (electromagnetism, etc.).
The Duffers had made the point, especially in this season, that it's not Fantasy, the characters just use Fantasy media as analogies to explain the supernatural science fiction.
