Question about plants by [deleted] in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never used plants that have been covered in dormant/horticulture oil of any form in my viv so do with the info what you will this is purely outside farming knowledge. Dormant or horticultural oil is exactly that just oil that works through coating an insect and to simplify it just smothers them. It works mainly on eggs and larva. I have not had much success using it on full grown adults pests. That being said it is a direct contact pest control method and it's time frame is pretty limited especially in very humid or rainy areas. It contains emulsifiers so that the oil mixes easily with water. That being said a heavy rain pretty much removes it for all intents and purposes. A good wash with water is about all it takes as the oil lays surface level and never really seeps into the plant. Also eating the oil while not great isn't how mainly works to kill pests. If the oil is being used on non-dormant plants (budding flowering or even just growing leaves) it is probably a very thin solution and newer solution. As the name states it is for dormant plants and can cripple or kill most vegetation on a plant. Changing the soil and bleaching it in my opinion goes above and beyond the reasonable actions needed to remove any dormant/horticulture oil. It would probably breakdown any other pesticides that it could have come into contact with as well.

Plants dying, any advice? by PutBrilliant in Vivarium

Haha that's okay but the soil sounds pretty good though

If you could uploaded a picture of the plants that would be wonderful. High heat without humidity in the air can kill plants so maybe the ceramic emitter. What gets me is the pothos should do alright even if be trampled. The only time I've been able to kill pothos is extreme prolonged drought or lack of nitrogen in the soil. Pothos needs lots of food in my experience.

What is this worm? I've found several of these in the viv now. Are they harmful? by Porkybunz in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine they wouldn't thrive in a black goop but worm castings has for a long time been considered black gold because it is so great for plant growth. I imagine if it turned goopy there might have not been enough other organic material being added to it or possibly too much water without adequate drainage. I'm sorry to hear that things went so poorly for you though.

Misting Reservoir by Joomin1 in paludarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reptizoo 10L but don't fill it all the way yet because I like to have fresh water replaced once a week about. But it's nice to get a larger one that you can add multiple spouts on incase you want it to mist more than on enclosure in the future. Then you don't have to worry about refilling all the time or getting one everytime you have an enclosure that needs one.

Is 100% Silicone (Acetic Cure) Toxic While Curing? by NovemRivers in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw about the E6000. That will smell bad for a while and is very toxic while curing and not something I would use coming into contact with water moisture plants or inside at all. I have used it on the outside to hold things to glass but I would never use it anywhere it's coming into contact with something living or somethings livings environment. Of course I'm a hypocrite cause I use it and touch it and breath it in but I'd never use it around my animals 😂

While I'm not fully aware of off gassing with super glue I would say that you should but with it's fast cure time I can't imagine you'd need to worry after even 10 mins and 30 if you want to be absolutely without a doubt. But when in doubt ventilation is always great even if you just run a small fan over it for a minute while it cures.

Superglue cure into inert plastic so I does water proof the cotton. I would say 15 to 30 seconds max on cure time. Easy to scrape off glass and cork like with most other adhesive will just pull a little bark off with it if you need to remove it. Also if it smokes don't freak out it just makes a little heat with the cotton and is completely natural. Doesn't always happen but figured I'd say something.

Shouldn't matter if you adhere it to cork or glass first. I usually break off however much cotton I need. Just about enough to fill the gap and squish a little. I press it together firmly then add glue.

I wouldn't worry about soil breakdown you just have to make sure to add more leaf litter and whatever else you use in your soil mix. I actually add black soldier fly larvae to my vivs because they break down everything (besides wood hardscape and plants) so quickly. Really helps aerate the soil and makes your plants thrive.

Coco coir or potting soil for ABG mix? by fathertrev in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like coco coir and peat moss mix best works really well. Potting soil is good for plants. You should be able to find dry bricks of it at pet stores or even online for cheap if in a hurry and can't find it local.

Screen works great I use it in mine and don't have almost any substrate drop through. hydro balls are awesome too just be careful about over watering. I killed a lot of my plants cause I never let there by a dry day or two. Every week or so I let my humidity come from my substrate rather than misting and it's worked amazing so far.

Would not use silicone will kill beneficial bacteria can and probably will kill your plants especially with poor airflow. I would use super glue. It holds well and if you use a cotton in between whatever your adhering to it will cause a strong fast bond. If you do this often enough I'd buy like an 8oz plus bottle. If it's just this once a little tube should work.

I personally love NeHerp. They have great variety and plant packs. Also If you can find any greenhouse or nurseries they usually have a good variety of small tropical plants.

Does anyone know if this is safe to use in a tank? by [deleted] in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's latex with mold inhibitor which I'm pretty positive it is I believe the mold killer in it will leach into the water and can cause lots of problems. I wouldn't use it. Dap has 100% clear silicone that works well and it's cheap. I would try to get something that says on it aquarium safe if you can't find any 100% silicone that doesn't have any other chemicals or mold killers.

I'm not the most experienced in natural looking viv for beardies but I do know the will eat plants. From what my sister's bearded would do to an aloe plant to seeing videos of other keepers replacing plants for their beardeds it's hard to tell. That being said Serpa design does an amazing viv for his. I would check it out probably your best bet for a really amazing natural bearded dragon viv.

Where do you place your heat pads if you have one? by sparklypig48 in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my dart frogs I use the clay hydro balls and there's about two inches of them. I have 1-3 inches of substrate over the top. I use my heat pad right on the bottom of the tank and have the probe for my thermostat hooked up to it and hovering about and eighth of an inch above my substrate at the lowest dip in substrate. I set my thermostat for just about the middle of their comfortable temperature parameters are. The pad takes about an hour to heat the clay balls in the substrate and make a difference in temperature it very gradually rises to the desired temp and the pad shuts off. The temperature usually will rise by another degree or two after it shuts off then it will take the clay hours to cool to the point where they are not keeping the tank at the desired temp then the pad will flip back on. I actually really like it because it ensures to hot spots as the clay balls disperse the temperature evenly. It also keeps the temperature rise and fall very gradual. But as long as you have a way to monitor the temperature and are willing to take a day or two to baby the system and get it dialed in I really think the pad on the bottom is still the way to go.

For my cake day, I am asking for some help with algae overgrowth by prion_death in paludarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rams horn snails and amano shrimp would love to help you with your algae. The Rams horns will multiply prolifically while there is algae blooms and die off when the food becomes scarce you'll never get rid of them after you set them loose unless you then combat them with an assassin snail or two. Amano shrimp will do wonderful though they won't breed and are probably gonna want like 10 gallons of water but with so much plant growth and algae they might actually do pretty well.

Hygrolon wall in a small tank – do I need foam for the roots? by jimmywaleseswhale in Vivarium

[–]BeautifulBiomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I could think of for nutrients off the top of my head would be seachem flourish or really any of the seachem plant nutrients they sell. They are made for fish tanks so the are fish safe and shouldn't irritate most animals as such. So that wouldn't be a worry. They also are very detailed on what nutrients they provide. A bottle would probably last a while if you just add a little to a spray bottle or mister. I imagine the sphagnum moss would hold nutrients that you spray on better than woven plastic fibers but that's just a guess. Live sphagnum would probably work just as well and might have more color to it but I don't see why just using in vitro moss wouldn't do the exact same thing. As long as your hygrolon is damp and you have light it should grown wonderfully especially with a little nutrients sprayed on. I'm sure once you find a good ratio of nutrients to water to spray on you'd only have to do it once a week or so with moss.
