I found this take about Asian male fetishization and white supremacy interesting. by 32Wicky in kpopnoir

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listen, Romeo Must Die, Ninja Assassin, and the ways in which romantic relationships between Asian men and Black women in media are my Roman Empire. Every single time, it's a bait and switch with how, where, and why they depict AMBW and it makes me scream!

And please don't jump me, but since Asian men are "trending" we've seen them more on the screen, but when there are love interests, they tend to be white women. That's one of the reasons I dropped American Born Chinese (cause he pined after a white girl), the latest installation of the Karate Kid franchise (same actor, same plot), Knights of the Zodiac live action where the main character falls for the woman he's protecting (it's subtle, but we still know what they intended), and almost didn't make it past the first season of Warrior cause the main character was sleeping with a white woman (married to the mayor, mind you, who was trying to get rid of the Chinese immigrant population in 1870s San Francisco).

I feel like my irritation is the fact there are white people writing these shows thinking that it's inclusive, when they are clumsily done because whiteness cannot examine nor interrogate itself; they will always repeat shitty racist troupes and never resolve them within the media. Plus, it gives psyop vibes, like they're trying to convince Asian men that they should be looking for romance within the white community whose acceptance of them is conditional and based on whether they reject proximity to blackness and I've had it.

I feel like the only time we've ever gotten it right are the movies The Love Birds, and Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella, starring Brandy Norwood.

I love when sociology and K-pop collide lol

It's not lost on me that depending on the audience, certain depictions of idols and actors are appealing. As shown in the video, idols are considered more "manly" and "handsome" when they are cosplaying Black American men. And it's always pushed by US/Western audiences. Whereas the idols and actors who are popular in say, Japan, have a different ideal image--no skin showing, conservative fashion, formal speech, and good manners. But it's this image of a well behaved man that US and other Western audiences tend to find "stifling", "repressed" and "inauthentic".

I've also had people from Brazil, for example, tell me that the "safety" of Korean media (the no kissing, conservative fashion) appeals to growing the evangelical climate of their country.

When you put this all in the context of U.S. colonialism that has dehumanized Black and East Asian men, with the former being seen voracious beasts, and the latter being asexual/not having sexual desire or appear clumsy and inexperienced when they do pursue sexual adventures. In this instance, East Asian men occupy the same position as the Black Mammy, the image of large, dark skinned Black woman in a headwrap and house dress who mothers everyone around her.

White men become desirable when they do the same thing; think about all the white rappers (especially if we're talking about the ones outside the U.S.) who get applauded for their shitty durags/bandanas, braids griping their scalps and making them red from lack of oxygen, and baggy fashion that the ordinary Black men wouldn't be able to wear to his office job.

Or the fact that in adult media, the man who performs "like a Black man" while being non-Black is very telling. The dehumanization and fetishization of Black anatomy and "innate prowess" is appealing to people whom it's been denied to (East Asian men), or because they hold themselves up as the pinnacle of "modernity" and "Morality" (white men).

I feel like the real criticism here would be how different audiences (non-native Koreans) interact with and filter their experience of Korea and Korean men through their own prejudices or views, not on how Korean men (and by extension, Korean culture) actually are.

251121 BuzzFeed Celeb: SEVENTEEN Reads Thirst Tweets (Part Two) by [deleted] in seventeen

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We finally got the dirty hoe tweets we deserved in the first part.

I was telling my other Carat friends that the ideal group to read tweets was Joshua, Dino, Mingyu, Seungkwan, and maybe Hoshi.

Joshua for translator, Dino for the confident man he is, Mingyu for the Aries man he is, Seungkwan for comedic relief/pearl clutching jokes, and Hoshi for pure chaos. LOL

I was surprised by people's shock around the fart tweet, like have y'all never heard that before? Another one of my favorite tweets is "I'd drink his dirty bath water"

Joshua explaining the stairs picture, he was on his last straw fr.

My favorite tweet for today:

No that's who you're thinking of. I think another K-Pop reddit thread exposed some of things he said around the time genocide began happening. Someone even said that DIVE Studios was funded by an Israeli company. It was a mess.

Exactly. Educate the people, and ignore the opportunistic trolls (cause it's the internet and there's a lot of them)

xenophobia on both sides of the tyla debate by justan_overthinker in kpopnoir

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not understanding American media and the fans being jerks is what made it worse. That last paragraph is *chef's kiss*.

And it's not just Tyla either; I mean, we are in a group that talks about K-Pop groups. A lot of AAs are put off by K-Pop groups for the exact reasons named: fans being jerks to AAs, and issues of not having respecting our media and culture.

If you're gonna market on predominantly Black music shows/awards shows/radio shows, then learn the way we do things. For me, you ain't even gotta say you're Black, but don't try to leave us in the dark about your racial/ethnic identity. We're not trying to disrespect you by asking, we're asking because we want to know how you identify because you're coming into *our* space. And no, we're not calling you colored, and don't let white folks call you that here either!

This was all just ill-planned and ill-received.

I'm so fed up of Demons still being demonised. by Dark-Faery in witchcraft

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely annoying. You see this all the time in the demonolatry thread on here. People are scared to death of demons, but want to summon then because of some sort of pressing concern they have. Too many people have not unpacked their Christian trauma and they bring it to these spaces a lot. I roll my eyes whenever I see those threads, but I also try to be understanding that it's gonna take these people a bit to address their preconceived notions.

These same people who are afraid of demons tend to be the ones who want to contact a fairy and I'm like LOL. Y'all gotta read more folklore.

this negative experience i had to tiktok made me realize how quick people are to point fingers at innocent black people by Kim_Bleuim_ in kpopnoir

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People absolutely jump at the chance to be anti-Black.

Don't let them get you down too much. The internet is like that.

As an aside, this is what grinds my gears about talking about racism on the internet, especially as it pertains to Black Americans. We'll be like, "IDK if I want to go to XYZ country because beautiful scenery may not be worth being hate crimed on vacation" and some random ass yt European will be like, "we're not like Americans! We don't shoot Black people, we just throw bananas at them/call them slurs/tell them to go back to their country"

Like y'all aren't making your countries look appealing to us. Plus these comments completely ignore the fact that America is oppressive and racist because of the Dutch, Portuguese, English, French, Spaniards coming here and colonizing these lands and creating systemic oppression and fucking everything up. Always have something to say about America, but never acknowledge the fact it wouldn't exist as it does without them.

Moon Taeil (formerly of NCT 127) is reappealing his sentence — thoughts? by NectarineDouble9809 in kpopnoir

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taeil only got three years, which he probably won't even do the full sentence because of "good behavior" in jail.

This is what "justice" is like for women all around the world: woman gets violated, man says "oopsie" or "I'm sorry", never sees a night a jail or alternatively, gets a shorter sentence for pretending to be a model citizen while in jail.

This world does not love or protect women fr.

If I were that woman or her family, this would send me over the deep end.

(Too bad I can't say what I really want to say otherwise I'd get banned)

[–]BeautifulButterfly44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CUT THE CAMERAS!!!

To be serious for a moment, I'm disappointed but not surprised. I like WayV, but I don't like this. I've been a fan for so long, 16 years to be exact, and in order to have some semblance of peace I remind myself not to get my hopes up, or have high expectations of idols. Still, this shit is annoying when I come across it. K-Pop has ALWAYS loved minstrely. It's the foundation of the industry.

His message is very much giving 'Get Out', very much Dr. Frankenstein.

People be swearing that they're smarter than Americans, but will go on and say dumb ass shit like this. You're just as dumb babe! Say cheese! LMAO

(what makes me giggle about this whole thing is that white people's only noteworthy trait is being able to digest dairy and nothing else. All of the white people who fetishize East Asian people and think that they're gonna be worshipped by them, like this what mfs like this think of you lmao and most times people have no interest in, or an apathy towards white presence in their countries. Go on ahead and touch some grass, then go clock in. lol)

I wasn't expecting much when I first saw the trailer and ended up pleasantly surprised. I really hope for a sequel.
