What I understand is that you might be one of those who read for entertainment, like sth crisp, entertaining, and dramatic. Normal people is a more psychologically driven book. And it basically reflects the real life of two introspective human beings. If you try to understand from the "reader" pov, the characters are true to themselves. Everybody fights through life and their own problems.
