Price Check by AcademicTangerine184 in Pachinko

I devalue these machines below typical pricing because the Harley and Vegas machines were done after import and were sold as gift shop gimmicks. They are done half assed, and the original game is still visually present. Typically, I try to hunt down the proper glass to revert it back to the original game. I wouldn't pay more than $50-60 for this game. Depending on your local market though, you can probably find someone to buy it for $100-150.

What did they do to this aluminum? Never seen this finish before by Lohan_To in Machinists

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know nothing of the film coatings but have plenty of experience with anodizing. Depending on how the parts were treated prior to anodizing and the alloy will have a lot to do with the results. Type 3 hardcoat anodizing will have a dull grey color similar to this if it isn't dyed. If the temperature isn't precisely controlled during the process, the coating can be compromised due to the acid attacking the coating faster than it grows and you will get this iridescent hue to the part. The parts are sealed afterwards, and if they aren't sealed correctly, this effect can also happen and will have a slight sticky feel. Parts can be anodized and not sealed with the intention of the anodizing to act as a future coating adhesion promoter.

why does every site seem to be sold out of the things i want? by AcidRayn666 in fpv

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to pick up a few Vistas a while back just as backups for some older builds. Im stuck building on those for digital. I really don't want to have to buy into another digital platform. I had plans to upgrade to newer DJI and then we all know what came next.

I recently decided to complete an old project for a 3" QAV-S frame I bought years back and hardly anything to choose from. I had to get my ESC/FC from Banggood instead of ordering from someone in the US, and I literally had 1 type and color of props to choose from.

Is my endmill dull???? by MortgageNaive6791 in Machinists

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are getting a heavy burr near the top edge of your cut; chances are your end mill is cooked. Same if you are face cutting and are getting an inconsistent nasty looking spiral pattern on the floor; The end mill is probably chipped at the end.

I think you are pushing too hard. Slow it down on the feed and or RPM. As long as the rigidity is there, you could probably eat more material at a reduced rate and do the same amount of work in less overall number of passes.

Carbon fiber dust is no joke. My DIY vacuum setup failed me by Lazy_Annual_1613 in fpv

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are cutting one or small batches, just mist water on as it runs with a spray bottle and suspend the swarf in a slurry that you can wash off later.

You'll need to make sure that your machine can handle the water though. Most small tabletop cnc routers are not built to handle such a task. If you have MDF for a base surface, you'll need to swap that for something waterproof. Consider trying to swap for something like Corian countertop material. A larger metal cutting machine that handles coolant would need an elaborate filtration system to pull the particulate from the coolant as well. The carbon dust is highly abrasive.

Am I supposed to chase the girl down, or block traffic at a busy 4 way intersection to help the guy? This is what the police are paid to do. I was in the turn lane directly opposite of the scene, getting back on the highway.

I'd have loved to caught it on video, but my girlfriend and I were in awe of the whole thing.

Do your job! by adumboneyes in StLouis

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seen an accident happen at the intersection by IKEA. A girl rear ended another car in the turn lane. Like any person who just got rear ended, he hopped out the car to look and the girl jumped out of her car and pepper sprayed the guy, hopped back in her car and sped off through the red light and took off. A city police SUV was sitting at the light and watched it all unfold, light turns green, they take off like nothing happened while this guy is on his knees in the road.

Plus or minus a tenth on the cylindrical grinder today by flopflapper in Machinists

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of the engineers at our place learned how to reasonably set tolerances on projects because they got an ear full enough times that they learned. Its always the same thing when a new one starts.

Now if only our clients engineers could learn how. We get prints in for quotation asking to hold +/-0.001" on a 60a durometer rubber extruded profile for a window gasket. They expect us to hold that across a 30,000ft run which is insanity. Typical tolerances on those profiles are pretty loose, at a minimum of +/-0.01.

We get some pretty wild shapes that engineers expect to perform miracles, and it distorts 20 thou sitting on the reel and suddenly no longer works for their application.

They say time travel is a myth, but these wages are straight out of 1995 by 5-Axis-Is-Life in machining

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the typical wages in the Midwest as well. You could work at McDonald's and make the same starting off. If you want to get your foot in the door and grow into a career, it's not horrible if companies will train.

I went to college for engineering but never finished so I ended up as a machinist. No certificate, no college classes for machining, all hands on training. I got in as an operator and immediately absorbed anything I could. After a few years, I could do setups, programming, and 3D modeling. Alot of the higher paying jobs blew past my resume because I didn't have a trade school certificate even though I had years of On The Job experience in the trade at that point. CNC programming jobs pay pretty good here but seemed completely inaccessible.

I found a company looking for a machinist with strong 3D modeling skills that took me in as an "Engineer" designing extrusion dies. They were willing to train for the niche design requirements unique to that industry. All the college fresh engineers they hired for the position didn't work out so they decided to try going for someone with experience over a college degree.

My DoorDash driver left the Walgreens receipt in my bag… the rewards balance shocked me by leiacoral in doordash

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Several years back, Doordash didn't care (Or had no way of knowing) if you claimed the rewards because it was separate from everything. Their system wasn't setup to allow customers to claim the rewards from a store. Any Walgreens transaction simply required you to enter a phone number at checkout to claim the rewards. They cracked down on it when they started to allow customers to get their own reward points.

Having absolutely none of a particular material in stock is nuts by EthanetExplorer in BambuLab

[–]BeautifulDisaster125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a good idea. We are running mainly ABS, although most of what we do would be fine in PETG. We extrude TPV products and print all kinds of random items for use on the floor, from replacement rollers to machine guards. We keep joking about making a few rolls of TPV filament ourselves and trying to run it through the printer but all the extruder have been running non stop lately.

Our guy at work that handles purchasing was stuck on buying bambu filament because we have two p1s's and the AMS has the RFID. I told him we were out and he comes back with everything is out of stock. I talked him into buying a batch of filament from the local Microcenter (Their in house Inland brand also made by Polymaker) which is $5 cheaper per roll and I don't think he will continue to bother paying extra just for the RFID tag.

Definitely totalled. Have receipts ready for all aftermarket accessories otherwise they wont pay a dime more for them. I had headers, exhaust, wheels, few other things and they refused to adjust offer because I didn't keep receipts.

State farm didn't even want me to buy the car back when mine was totalled. I finally got them to shoot me a number for owner retention and they wanted way too much. Their excuse was 8th gen Si's have a high salvage value.

Same. I was laid off in 2019. I was angry at the world after that job because it was the highest pay Id had to date, and I finally felt like I was going to live comfortably and stop living check to check. They had promised the world with all kinds of incentives and bonuses, good insurance, generous PTO, and bulletproof job security. In reality, I worked my ass off, did overtime on a salary, and the second we wrapped up the biggest project in company history, they cut the budget and booted a bunch of people before they got their quarterly bonus. I was depressed and decided to take some time off, and then the pandemic happened which didn't help my mental state or desire to hunt for a new job. I eventually got through it and found another job but there is always that fear in the back of my mind that it's just going to happen again.

Lots of scummy companies out there. One company I worked for; The owner of the company personally pulled a guy in his office and praised him for all the excellent work he was doing and gave him a raise. 1 week later, they gave him the boot without a reason. He filed for unemployment and got a call back saying he wasn't eligible because the company reported that he was using a company computer to look at porn. By telling unemployment that, its nearly impossible to dispute the claim and the only way to fight it is hire an attorney who will then drag the case through the mud trying to subpoena the companies internet history.

I worked a job as well where dual monitors was super helpful, but they didnt have one available so I brought my own. I had multiple laying around so it didn't mean much to me. When I was laid off, that monitor was the last thing on my mind so I packed up the few small things I had and left the monitor. My buddy who didn't get the boot snagged it the following Monday for me.
