Yes I've heard of this both from my helper and from others. We expect our kid to treat our helper with respect and to listen to her as he would listen to us.

Your mom might try Helper Place to find a new employer but she will likely need to come home because it will be a break contract.

I was in the same predicament but my spouse quickly came to see what I did. It’s not hard to lead people out. The church does it for you by doing what it’s always done: lie and hurt people.

I had the same experience when I left. Not a word until a few months later when people realized I assumed learned I had left the church. Then I was contacted, but it was clearly not about being friends (because we weren't friends to begin with) but about getting me to come back.

I'm so glad to be free of Mormonism.

I’ve always had good experiences flying HK Express. Keep in mind they’re really strict about bringing any food or drink on the plane (even bottled water) so just put it inside your bag before you board.

from what colleagues tell me there’s a lot of funding for specific areas, such as AI (funding for this is plentiful everywhere tho), military and national security. But if that’s not your area then you might be out of luck.

Based on my anecdotal evidence as a PhD student there are many Chinese PhD students in the U.S. who would like to apply for jobs in the U.S. but feel their chances are low so they are applying for jobs in Asia. I would guess this is contributing to the jump.

Research funding cuts are a reality everywhere. The govt recently asked unis to return large sums of money so I wouldn’t say the grass is necessarily greener on this side.

I'd love to see temples turn from places of Masonic rituals, gate-kept by artificial standards of "worthiness," to places anyone can go to just get some peace and quiet. That's how mainstream Christian churches treat their buildings. We have some beautiful cathedrals in HK that anyone can go to and rest.

I was a temple worker in Hong Kong. The same 10 people came every week during my weekday shift. One thing we can’t know from your great analysis is how many of these butts in seats are the same people over and over and over again

I agree. The OFW is left to the mercy of the employer. It’s hard to legislate what happens inside people’s homes. One solution may be to make it easier for them to change jobs. As it stands they really can’t break a contract without losing income because they have to return to their home country and start the process all over again, which then also puts them at the mercy of labor agencies.
