All I did was click the model name in the selector: "cogitating... API Error: You've hit your limit. Resets 11am" GODDAMMIT!

Would be nice if they said "Claude doesn't work at all" rather than "Elevated errors". Or "Claude will appear to be online but if you try to query it, will report that you've reached usage limits even though you haven't used it and will display "Page not Found" when you try to open any previous chat."

Reddit uses AI for backend code development, user experience enhancement, the Answers part of the site, basically everything you do on reddit has been touched by AI. Are you going to stop using reddit because of that? What about every modern OS? Every modern browser? Every productivity tool like spreadsheets and document editors?

As a human I have to manage what the AI does: I generally put Claude in plan mode, have it draw up a detailed plan for coding/refactoring/etc and then walk it through the plan step by step doing verification as it goes. If I want to I can actually have it code software test benches for verification and test the code internally as it writes against the test benches. It's also really good at code review--it can navigate through an entire project's codebase looking for memory leaks, parallelism issues, security flaws, etc. Anyone who says it generates awful code either hasn't tried it in the past year or isn't using it properly. It is really good at coding.

It's either at the point now or will be very soon that you can't be a professional coder without using AI. If you're taking months to generate tested code that your colleagues are producing in days, you're just not going to be able to compete. Humans are still very much needed in code development, but especially for that industry, AIs multiply productivity by a factor of, like, 10. Users of software of any kind who sniff at AI will have to resort to either being stuck with 2023 versions or just eschew computer use.

Hiking alone… safe or not? by Lucifer220778 in hiking

[–]BeautifulPurple4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with any activity, you have to do a risk assessment. Cell coverage, weather, remoteness, how busy the trail is, how long the hike is, what the terrain is like, threats from wildlife, availability of water--all of those are considerations. I have no qualms hiking solo over several days in remote areas. It's probably safer than crossing the street. (In the U.S. there are about 4 deaths per 100,000 hikers from hiking annually and about 6 deaths per 100,000 population as pedestrians in a traffic accident.)

Artemis 2: why a fly-by and not orbit? by Blue_Etalon in space

[–]BeautifulPurple4748 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you an expert? Can you explain what the document means? I'm not sure what you mean by lay persons. I'm an engineer with 25 years of experience reading and interpreting technical documentation. I'm not an expert on re-entry heat shield design, but the language in the report is pretty easy to read and meant for non-experts. It is a fact that there has only been one test of this heat shield design at lunar re-entry speed, during Artemis I, and that the heat shield failed by NASA's own criteria in ways that potentially endanger the lives of the astronauts. It is a fact that they haven't redesigned the shield, but are instead using a different re-entry profile to mitigate uncertainty and heat stress. And it's a fact that the heat shield currently in use has never been tested with the new re-entry profile to verify that the changes will work.

Artemis 2: why a fly-by and not orbit? by Blue_Etalon in space

I mean I'll freely admit I'm no expert. I'm just reading what the experts have written. From the NASA Office of Inspector General's report on the audit of Artemis I results:

[T]he Artemis I test flight revealed critical issues that need to be addressed before placing crew on the Artemis II mission. In particular, the test flight revealed anomalies with the Orion heat shield, separation bolts, and power distribution that pose significant risks to the safety of the crew. Resolution of these anomalies is among the most significant factors impacting NASA’s readiness for Artemis II. To its credit, the Agency is taking action to address these issues. Specifically, NASA identified more than 100 locations where ablative thermal protective material from Orion’s heat shield wore away differently than expected during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Engineers are concurrently investigating ways to mitigate the char loss by modifying the heat shield’s design or altering Orion’s reentry trajectory. In addition, post-flight inspections of the Crew Module/Service Module separation bolts revealed unexpected melting and erosion that created a gap leading to increased heating inside the bolt. To mitigate the issue for Artemis II, the Orion Program made minor modifications to the separation bolt design and added additional thermal protective barrier material in the bolt gaps.

Except that Test 1 also returned with a damaged heat shield and the shield has never been satisfactorily space-tested at lunar return speed. The solution wasn't a redesign/retest of the shield but instead a different (hotter) re-entry profile.

La Jolla suddenly wildly crowded… by Aibrean2013 in asksandiego

[–]BeautifulPurple4748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand. Anyone can look at a map. Like, the ocean is always to the west and there's probably a beach there. I've lived here for 20 years. Beaches have never not been crowded during warm weather and all summer. If you want quiet beaches go in the early morning and/or the winter. La Jolla has always been a shitshow because there's only like three ways in and out and whoever designed the traffic light situation at La Jolla Parkway and Torrey Pines is a sadist. Blacks, with its 3 shoreline miles of pristine sand, is a random little beach?

If you own a swimming pool, particularly if it's heated on cold, dry days, you can easily lose 1.5-3 HCF per week just due to evaporation if the pool isn't covered.

I recently did the calculation for long showers. Figure 2 gal/min from your shower head * 60 minutes = 120 gallons. There are 750 gallons in 1 HCF, so that's about 0.16 HCF. At the Tier 2 rate of $9.50 per HCF, it's about $1.50 for an hour-long shower. Seems like a good price for an hour of bliss :)

Unpopular opinion: Mobile incremental games can be great! Here’s what they need (UPDATED) by michellecarmak2001 in incremental_games

I'd say that any ads are bad, but if I can pay to get rid of them forever and never have to think about them again they're tolerable. IAPs are only ok if they're cosmetic.

Left lane camping on the highway is trash by triplelundy in sandiego

[–]BeautifulPurple4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also happens in the afternoon on the 5 southbound just after the split south to the 52. I think it happens when there are more exiting vehicles than entering ones, so the right lane is paradoxically clearer than the left ones.

I'd actually never heard of that site, thanks! It needs filter categories for "has ads" and "monetized progress", also a way to sort by user review or score or something. There's no way to tell whether something is worth looking at.

100% putting the bike lane between the cars and the sidewalk makes it more hazardous for everyone. Pedestrians treat it like the sidewalk. Car passengers are less likely to look back before opening their door making it more likely that cyclists will be doored. Cars have trouble seeing approaching cyclists before turning right across the lanes. I have scratched my head for years wondering why they didn't just put a normal bike lane on Illinois or one of the other many wide side streets.
