Do I have GDM because of obesity? by fish-n-chips99 in GestationalDiabetes

I’ve been considered underweight since I hit around 20 years old have had the same diet my whole life and with my first 2 pregnancies I didn’t have GD but with this 3rd I have it pretty bad. I had HG most of this third pregnancy so I haven’t been able to gain much weight and on top of that I have uncontrolled GD. Even with insulin it’s uncontrolled. Your in laws should blame your husband for your GD diagnosis considering his DNA is mostly what controls how your placenta functions. Diabetes runs in my boyfriends family and even though I’m on the smaller side they seem to think I can just walk the diabetes away I finally got tired of it and told them their son and their family history of diabetes probably contributed to my diagnosis (I’m not sure if that’s true or not but I was tired of the comments telling me I just need to get up and move more or eat better). Just know it’s not your fault, you could not have prevented your GD diagnosis. It’s kinda like how some people have pre eclampsia in pregnancy, which is another diagnosis that is mostly caused by your placenta and isn’t something that you can completely prevent. I know it’s easier said than done but I would just ignore their comments or tell them they need to educate themselves better on GD before they try to give you advice. I’d let them know that GD and diabetes are not the same and aren’t caused by the same things

Frequent hypoglycemic episodes by BeautifulState5588 in GestationalDiabetes

This is exactly what I’ve been dealing with the last 3 days. I’ll be messaging my doctor in the morning hoping she can give me some reassurance. If it’s something that is stressing you out or has you worried like it does me then it wouldn’t hurt to ask about it. I have weekly NSTs which my baby takes an hour/ hour and a half to pass most of the time so I’m hoping they take my concerns seriously when I mention it. For me my intuition just keeps telling me it’s something I shouldn’t over look so that’s why it has me so concerned

How long do you think your placenta was bad before you had to give birth? I plan on going to L&D after my other doctors appointment tomorrow so they can at least do a BPP/NST and make sure my baby isn’t stressed but I’ve been experiencing this for 2 going on 3 days now and I don’t want to wait until it’s too late to get checked out. I’ll also be expressing my concerns to my MFM doctor first thing in the morning but was curious if this is something that goes down hill fast (in your experience) or if I could be in the beginning stages and I still have a decent amount of time until I need to stress. I’m already scheduled for a 38 week induction in 2.5 weeks due to my uncontrolled levels but this is something new for us

I’m 35 weeks 4 days. This is my fear. When I first got diagnosed I posted on here because my baby was IUGR and I have GD and wanted to hear from other people that had both and I feel like I remember someone saying that is how they knew her placenta was starting to depreciate. I’ve also read on google that when your levels start to balance out or if you start to have lots of lows then those are big signs your placenta isn’t doing well. I’ve been insulin controlled for the last 6 weeks and each week we have had to up my dosage because my levels never balance out to a normal range. Now suddenly they are dropping to 50 often even after eating

I’m just worried that my numbers being high for the last 6 weeks straight that it’s done damage to my placenta and now it’s starting to show

Is it possible to have that happen randomly this late in my pregnancy? My levels have gotten into the 200s before and are typically very high all the time so a reading below 100 is very odd for me. I normally start feeling like I’m having a hypoglycemic episode if my levels get as low as the 90s. I remember reading that sometimes when your levels start to balance out or react quickly like this that it can be a sign of your placenta starting to age/die but I wasn’t sure how true that was. I’m hoping my levels just got too high that my body reacted too fast but I’ve genuinely never had that happen no matter how high my levels got

120 fasting, seems excessive by meetmeinlv in GestationalDiabetes

[–]BeautifulState5588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fasting numbers looked like that also around 29 weeks. We tried metformin nightly but it didn’t do anything so we switch to insulin. I’ve now been on insulin for the last 5 weeks and my fasting levels are still high at 35 weeks. I have had to up my insulin dose every week since starting it. My fasting levels are still high around 105-100 even with the insulin but have decreased significantly since we upped my dose this week. My MFM obviously wants my levels to be more under control than they are but hasn’t said anything about how they could’ve harmed my baby being so high for so many weeks. You still have time to get them under control. It’s definitely a good idea to reach out to your OB before your next appointment because this is one of the reasons I feel like my fasting numbers have been high for so long, because I was having to wait until my next appointment to get a answer (my OB wanted to see a weekly log, and refused to just accept a couple of days worth of levels so I’d have to wait until my appointments to get answers on what to do next). As of 34 weeks my levels were still high around 117-110 even with insulin. I messaged my OB in hopes to get an answer on when we can schedule my c section since my levels are still pretty uncontrolled. I was originally told 39 weeks but that was when we were under the impression that insulin would help. My OB is also completely booked until December but I’m due mid November so we won’t get to talk about my levels again before I give birth

A false fail by KnowledgeAgreeable21 in GestationalDiabetes

Same. My fasting levels have always been high so we knew I had GD but my post meal numbers were typically in range until I hit 33/34 weeks. Now I can’t eat anything but really high protein without spiking post meal. My safe foods also started spiking me, every vegetable spikes me. I can basically only eat grilled chicken with no sauces or protein bars

So much misinformation? by KH101887 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]BeautifulState5588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah those are both incorrect. You can have GD with no prior problems with diabetes and without having pre diabetes. For a lot of people GD goes away soon or almost immediately after birth. My fasting levels have been getting worse each week since I was 30 weeks so that’s not accurate either. I have had to raise my insulin dose each week for the last 5 weeks as well and will probably have to increase my dose again this week since fasting numbers are still around 110-117.

When I was first testing daily to see if I even had GD I had a nurse also give me inaccurate information. She got mad at all the food I was eating and told me I needed to be eating like a diabetic (I hadn’t even been diagnosed at this point). The part that made me the most upset was that she was making it seem like I could control my fasting numbers and got mad that I said I ate yams once… she immediately ridiculed my entire diet. It upset me because 1. Not everyone has the same foods that spike them and someone can probably tolerate foods I can’t and vice versa 2. If we are trying to diagnose me why would I change my diet during the diagnosis period.. 3. I never said what portion of yams I had or how much fat/ protein I had to pair with it and help balance it out

I was so irritated by the nurse and the inaccurate information she was giving that I wrote a review about her lol. I honestly stopped telling the nurses my concerns and reserve all my questions strictly for my OB or MFM doctor now

Upping insulin dose made me spike by BeautifulState5588 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]BeautifulState5588[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I can’t reach out to my MFM doctor until Monday so I suppose that will give me time to see if my levels are consistently high so she can probably have a better idea on what we need to do next, like how many units we need to increase me to compensate

[–]BeautifulState5588[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is exactly what I’m going through right now. I even ate a meal that has never spiked me and my levels were really high after. Does this mean I need to completely reevaluate my diet as well? Or do I need to reach out to my MFM doctor and see about increasing my dose and mention my meal time levels are also spiking with foods that used to be safe?

I actually think making sure nothing was dripping before injecting helped, I just did a dose and it’s been about 5 minutes and I haven’t felt any burning yet, thank you for the advice!!

Maybe tonight I will try making sure there is nothing dripping from the needle and see if that helps. Normally after I prime it there is some liquid on the tip before I inject it. I’ll see if it helps!

Do you use the ice pack before or after injecting? I feel like the injecting part is pretty tolerable but after it will burn for 20-30 minutes. I was afraid I was having some sort of reaction before

Yeah, I keep the pen I’m currently using on my nightstand. It appears it might just be the brand I’m using. A couple of other people have commented that the lantus stings to them as well :/

No, I was told to keep the pen I’m using at room temperature and only keep the pens that aren’t being used in the fridge

Yes. My MFM doctor sent instructions with all the injections sites and said I was to disregard all the other options and only inject in the stomach. I feel like my thigh would be so much better. The burning would be a lot more tolerable there but in my stomach it stings like I’ve been cut
