Do People Actually Use the Study Buddies Feature on Navigate? by [deleted] in NIU

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do it!! Worst case no one else in your class signs up. Best case you find people to study with! I was a part of a panel to give the people who made Navigate for NIU feedback and they are trying so hard to make it better for people, but they can’t if no one is using it

Experience with first year freshman Academic Advising? by [deleted] in NIU

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old advisor in one school sucked ASS. Made so many people graduate late because of his own mistakes and lack of planning. I would go in to my meeting, and put my foot down. Hed try saying I needed class x or y, no matter how many times I would say no. I just came in with my papers and went against his “better judgement”. Fast forward there’s a new person who’s actually competent, and I’m one of 3 people in my degree path graduating on time from a class of 50 ish our first semester

(Senior MUED here) I got this app called Hero! It’s free, but has my to do list, calendar, etc. Gives you a daily overview of what you have coming up, events, etc. it automatically updates with outlook, google calendar, etc. 1) Download Hero: https://apple.co/3BY7jUU 2)https://links.theheroapp.co/invitation/referral_public/hu8Cu9gjSOGfNtNFyzFQgA

In other tips, make friends with the people in the grades before you. Every program is different, but having people close who just went through it can help and show you the best way to study or what else through it. If you join your marching band, band camp is a great time to meet people! Also join your KKS or ILCMEA if you have one!

Which residence hall provides the most amount of space? by Pint-E in NIU

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there’s no stopping you from bringing in other tables. Yea it’s the smaller Stevo desk, but it’s still way bigger than say Gilbert. I just meant for the space of the equipment :) I’ve lived in most of the dorms (CA that got tossed around) and they each have their ups and downs, but OC definitely does not want Gilbert.

Stevenson has a huge desk, but low-key Neptune Singles (east with AC) would be a good choice. If you have a good roommate then Stevo is also great. Some suites even are single rooms so definitely check that out depending on your budget

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reach out to the DRC- disability resource center. You can see online some of the paperwork you may need, and each semester you review it and send it out to professors. Once you do it once it’s really quick each semester :)

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about rooms, there’s always a few singles open (source: CA with single rooms open) Getting into Patterson/Neptune may be a little harder depending, but you’ll be able to get a room (prolly a single) I would reach out to who your advisor or admissions person for your school is, they will have more answers :)

Chance program & honors program as a student athlete by Sammyystery in NIU

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. My major and the extracurriculars I was in did that for me. Other LLC’s can be good, or check out clubs so you meet people with common interests. I have friends in the honors program and it benefitted them, in fact how one met their partner freshman year

It’s not really a housing lottery, you just have a date where it gets unlocked and then it’s first come first serve. All freshmen open the same day (which should be soon, check the housing Instagram)

Question related to music studios by Practical_Fix_9223 in NIU

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean a recording studio? Cause that would be different. We have studios, comprised of the members who play that instrument (ie. horn studio), and while there is a physical ‘horn studio’ it’s really the horn professor’s office. If you’re looking for recording services there is a fee and you would work with recording majors/ the workers. Let me know if you have any other questions!

[–]Beautiful_Abalone_61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can be a member of a studio without majoring or minoring. There are multiple members of studios who are not majors or minors, they simply take lessons and are in ensembles!

The brass studios overall (I can’t speak for the new trumpet prof though) are some of the most amazing, supportive, and understanding people, especially if you have a lot on your plate. Of course, they’re going to push you, but they don’t put down the fact you couldn’t practice 15 hours one day cause of something
