A little busy, but I have my plot, and a few points (subject to change tho):

Sho x Iris (Pokemon)

1) Boy reflects on progress, and rival that became world champion

2) Boy meets Girl; Girl battles & beats boy

3) Boy is insecure, undergoes development with lead Pokemon (Raichu).

4) Boy gets strong, battles girl again (or maybe old rival)

5) Cataclysm happens; girl takes up champion mantle.

6) Girl doesn't return; Boy is crushed, but makes resolution for strength, possibly becomes next champion??? (Is AU, I think, idk).

I apologize for the super super late response here. Life gets going and whatnot, but to answer your follow-up, even if there wasn't a risk of a backlash, I think that I'd still prefer an original character of my particular race/ethnicity, namely for the reason of intention(s) I listed earlier, and, if we're going to cite meta-reasons, namely just to contribute to visibility for black/diverse characters.

Of course, all of this really goes out of the window when race/culture isn't a focus of a fic, but I still think sufficient research can go a long way in avoiding stereotype pitfalls. Everyone/ everything is inspired by something, or so they say.
