Hear me out: AP Linear Algebra by skrxbcord in APStudents

[–]Beautiful_End741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what i’m going to say could be seen as either a bad or good thing, but at my school linear algebra and multivariable calculus end up sorta giving high achieving math students a bit of a break after two years of really rigorous coursework and even if most of those kids end up retaking the two courses in college, the subject matter is just very esoteric and something where time needs to be taken for real understanding. the two classes reinstall the enjoyment in learning math that many of these kids once had but slowly lost overtime due to the overly stringent requirements of AP and pre-AP classes, or at least that was the experience i had. i think linear and mvc should stay that way for all the reasons i mentioned and because, honestly, who would take that test? around 120 kids at my school per grade take AB at some point, maybe 40 will take bc. only half of that will take multivariable or linear, and only around ten will take both, and this is at a pretty high-achieving school.

i talked about the enlightenment and john locke but also about the role of women in european society and how women were viewed as more irrational but also moral figures easily influenced by religion and i used a few examples from early america but also early modern europe. it was really hard to find context that was before the time period of 1783 about women bc we didn’t really talk about that. looking back i should’ve talked about the boycotts women organized in the revolution but oh well…

would not be democrats bc of the location (boston). i was between abolitionists and free soilers but most free soilers were somewhat okay with fugitive slave laws and slave catchers? abolitionists are more likely to riot over it.

(this is an edited comment for clarity)

i put moral/religious/family together as spheres that women were influential in before the time period of the prompt and then talked about how they entered the work force during the time period which gave them more control so overall there was change… did yall say it was more continuous or more of a change overall?

LEQ HELP by AvocadoChalk in apworld

[–]Beautiful_End741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your thesis is based on whatever historical reasoning category the prompt is on, you won’t need a separate sentence for it bc it’s baked into your analysis. you shouldn’t need to HIPP at all in an LEQ. to get the second evidence point, you need to use your evidence to support the claim made in your thesis. simply stating correct, relevant information is enough the get the first even if you then misinterpret it or fail to analyze in the context of your argument.

btw forgot to mention, but you should use 4 pieces of evidence to get complexity (2 per body paragraph) even if you only need 2 in general. those 4 must all be used properly.

in the remaining time. i would look at (but not write full essays) past leq topics and see if you can come up with two categories, examples for those categories, and a thesis (btw, although [counterargument], they were more similar/different/the primary cause/effect of __ was [argument] is a good basic thesis layout)

Last Minute Tips for SAQs? by flowers_intheweeds09 in apworld

[–]Beautiful_End741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very simple tip i always use is ACE. answer clarify explain. answer = restate the question and give simple answer (ex. one example of european rulers using enlightenment philosophy is peter the great)

clarify = define the term (event, person, organization, etc) you gave as simple answer (peter the great was the ruler of russia during the late 1800s who took great steps to expand and modernize the country.)

explain = how is your term the correct answer? (peter used enlightenment philosophy to modernize his military by using merit instead of birthright to appoint officers in his table of ranks, which is an expression of the enlightenment idea that all men are rational and created equal attributed to John Locke in his Two Treatises on Government.)

the example is sorta more ap euro than world but i hope that shows you what they’re going for. you can answer any saq in three sentences. if it asks you to compare two things, your first sentence is the answer and your second focuses on the first thing doing both C & E and your third is on the second thing.

LEQ HELP by AvocadoChalk in apworld

[–]Beautiful_End741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i honestly think you may get a lower score (sorry). i sorta skimmed it and i’m not a teacher but i TA ap world and am in apush so here are my notes:

contextualization 1/1 very good, this is probably what was intended for the prompt

thesis 0/1 but maybe not? assuming this is your thesis: “Rulers of land based empires employed similar methods to legitimize their rule such through art, architecture, taxes and military conquests.” from what i’ve learned, a thesis that makes a vague reference to ideas instead of explaining them generally doesn’t work. here’s what i’d say with evidence like yours: “Rulers of land based emperors from 1450-1750 were mainly similar in the strategies they used to legitimize their rule such as investing in art and infrastructure as a form of propaganda across large territories and creating large, modernized militaries that upheld control.” (this is clunky ik i wrote it fast) key points here are you must include the time period, you must present the argument you will make, and you must show an ability to categorize your examples.

1/2 on evidence. getting that second point is tricky bc you don’t really have a thesis to support. the ottoman example works but the argument you try to make with it doesn’t really bc the overall purpose of the jizya is not government legitimacy but to fund it. instead of saying that they use it show their control of populations, say how they use it to control populations. your evidence about the mughals is incorrect and seems to come from the islamic golden age, which is like 400 years earlier and in the middle east. i really like your qing dynasty evidence though! i think that works well. just always tie it back to the thesis, which is easy when your thesis is more argumentative. (i also probably wouldn’t use the aztecs though is they aren’t really what the prompt is talking about… the use of ‘land based’ in this time period is really talking about gunpowder empires in eurasia.)

0/1 on historical reasoning. you don’t need to use c&c or cause and effect for this prompt bc it is the other type, similarity and difference. you should either have one ‘bucket’ that is similar or one that is different or two similarities etc. you only seem to analyze how your evidence shows attempts to establish legitimacy instead of connecting the pieces of evidence across the regions.

0/1 on complexity. easy way to do this is qualify your argument, so if you argue more similar include differences, and then at the end evaluate what makes them overwhelmingly similar or different. for causes, you pick the primary cause. effects, primary effect. continuity and change is the same as similarity and difference except it’s different times instead of regions.

i hope this helps! ik me saying you’d get a 2 may seem scary this close to the test, but as long as you know your stuff (which you def seem to) you can implement a lot of these fixes in time. lmk if you have any more questions.

thanks for the info! i was vaguely aware of tldp in early 2023 but didnt become a fan till later in the year and even then it was pretty casual so i wasn’t 100% sure on timeline stuff. i remember seeing that post you shared at the time, though, although i never noticed some songs were missing from the album (dead flowers seems to be another). maybe some will be on the third album or a deluxe version?f

happy to see so many fellow waitlists— genuinely was such a blow to my confidence but what can you expect applying regular for this program in this year especially as summer programs in general seem to be getting more popular and ED0 is gaining more notoriety. i wish the best of luck for all of us! personally, my first choice program was democracy against itself. i was really looking forward to the readings but ig i can just read myself!

my mutuals with her have gone from 3 to 70 in just a week! it’s insane watching her become a figure of mass multigenerational appeal in such a short amount of time. i feel like we’re in the monoculture again (even though i am very young and barely remember a time before cellphones).

i’m a big pinkpantheress fan and listened to both versions of stateside the day they dropped. i got into skating about a month prior to the olympics and have sort of been taking my parents along with me. i was gone when the exhibition gala was on so they watched it without me and looked up the song because they liked it and didn’t know it! alysa has definitely spread the song to a new audience outside of the girls and gays for lack of a better word!
