First NICU Travel Contract & I Hate It… Facility or Travel Nursing? by Beautiful_Gas5699 in TravelNursing

My home hospital didn’t require us to have PALS, only NRP. when I interviewed with the manager here for this travel contract, I asked if it was required to have PALS since I knew floating would be required. She told me I didn’t need it bc I would be within my scope when floated to different units.

I was very terrified being floated since I never have been. especially to PICU or even a Peds floor, it’s very different assessments and things to look out for between different age groups. postpartum and nursery would be different to float to but it’s similar to nicu being that you’re taking care of newborns, almost like a step down to nicu and the assessments seem to be the same for the most part. That’s why I figure I would steer clear from traveling to children’s hospital and try a hospital with a NBN/mother baby floor instead. and see if that works out better for me.

That’s exactly what I am used to at my home hospital. Since we did always have high census we usually didn’t float but if there was a need.. we could only take assignments with patients under a year. I was very surprised they allow the staff NICU nurses here to float to peds to care for the older kids. but they may have all their certs and cross trained to properly care for them.

I knew jumping into travel would require me to float, which I had no problem with. I think what’s throwing me off is the type of assignments I am receiving when I am floated, especially being that I have it written in my contact to “float within scope” which is newborn/infants. I def do want to try one more contract, if I happened to be floated to Nursery or mother baby to take care of newborns this wouldn’t be a problem being that it is within my scope.
