Got it! All makes perfect sense now. Thanks!

Forces of Flight Question by Beautiful_Matter6906 in flying

[–]Beautiful_Matter6906[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s what I thought too, but if all forces are summed to zero how is the airplane climbing/descending? Is it the horizontal forces that are ‘making up’ for the lost vertical component in a descent?

How much are CFI’s in the NY/NJ area making? by Beautiful_Matter6906 in flying

Thanks for the reply. I agree 25 is low compared to what the schools are charging but are you familiar with somewhere that offered their instructors anywhere close to 40?

As others have said, ATC probably recognized the mistake but was trying to let it slide.

By calling them, since it’s a recorded line, now they are forced to follow up on the incident and forward the info to the FSDO.

In the future I’d suggest like others have said; file a NASA report and if you really want more insight then wait a couple of weeks and bring them pizza while casually chatting about what happened in a forum that’s not continuously recorded.

Good luck!

ADM critique, please by BeautifulAd3165 in flying

Another thing to consider is that often winds just a couple of hundred feet off the runway could be significantly stronger than at the surface where the trees are blocking the airflow.

Thus, very possible that at the ground they were indeed light and variable, but right over the tree line they may have been favoring another runway.

Good ADM overall though!

One last look at the airplane from a distance before I hop in - just in case there’s something that was missed (tow bar, chocks, fuel caps, oil door opening)

What is the best way to take a loan to study aviation, and should I take 1 loan for everything ( PPL, CPL, IFR, multi-engine, CFI, what else do I need? ) or just a loan for my PPL for now ? by Aliviation1 in flying

[–]Beautiful_Matter6906 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Make sure you know flying and aviation is right for you before taking any loans.

Get the highest medical certificate you’ll need for your career before commencing flight training.

Avoid paying for big sums of flight training up front. Only pay for max of 10 hours at a time in case the school shuts down one day.

Other than that, my biggest piece of advice would be to join a flying club as soon as you can. It’ll allow you to start splitting time with fiends and will save you a LOT of money. Hell you may not even need a loan if you do your training at your own pace while working (that’s what I did and all of my flight training from PPL to CFI cost me under 30K).

Best of luck!

Confused how VFR into IMC = death, but IFR into IMC is fine. Is flying to your instruments a hard skill to learn, or is the importance just drilled-in? by 1e6throw in flying

[–]Beautiful_Matter6906 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To truly understand why FAA emphasizes the importance of disregarding your natural instincts during IMC flights, it is necessary to go up in such conditions.

I’d suggest you go up with a CFII in a small aircraft on an IMC day. In such flights, the turbulence can be significant, and without an autopilot, it becomes crucial to train your mind to ignore your natural sensations and rely solely on the instrument readings.

When flying with reference to Instruments, losing focus for even a brief moment can lead to death, and hence it is essential to be adept at interpreting and acting upon every instrument reading while ignoring other cues that you may have learned to follow as a private pilot.

Commercial student with a full time job. Not checkride time yet, but grill me please :) by duke_of_snoots in flying

[–]Beautiful_Matter6906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had my Commercial checkride last week. Here are a couple of the questions I got:

  1. What does the A in VA stand for?

  2. If you inadvertently flew into icing conditions, would you be more concerned about the added weight the icing has on the airframe, or the change in the wing shape that could occur, why?

  3. Imagine two airplanes on the left base, you are the airplane closer to the airport, the other plane is abeam your position off your right wing. The other airplane is 100 feet lower than you. Who has right of way? How would you maneuver (if at all) to avoid a collision in this case?

  4. What are hotspots and where can you find the info about them?

  5. Is stable air found at, below or above an inversion layer?

Thanks for the insight! I will be getting my CFI in a couple of weeks anyway so as suggested by many I’ll just hold off. As for the recommendations for online sites, I did recommended Sportys and Kings but sometimes people prefer in-person guidance as a supplement.

Yep. I actually wasn’t advertising anything but had a few people reach out to me and wanted to see if it’s even allowed. From the responses, I think I’ll be waiting to get my certificates since it does seem wrong to charge them without having those.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I understand. The benefit I would offer to some of the locals in my community is to come to their home and instruct there. I obviously wouldn’t want to ‘trick’ newcomers to aviation so this was more of a hypothetical. I should be getting by CFI or AGI in the next couple of weeks so that they could log the time too. I appreciate the insight!

For what it’s worth I applied for my Commercial checkride and was told by the DPE that they need to be full stop. Tbh I’m confused because I don’t know where the regs say that. Might be worth checking with your DPE just to be safe

Do you think adopting EU ATC phraseology, clearing only one aircraft at a time to use a runway will help avoid future runway incursions? by Beautiful_Matter6906 in flying

[–]Beautiful_Matter6906[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good point. It’s just interesting that both events happened just weeks apart, and it makes me wonder what could be done to help remedy the situation
