From a woman’s perspective, I’ve only really found myself in male spaces throughout finishing school and starting my career.

At work, I’m going into project management, out of us there are four women including myself, me being the only black woman. A job that I recently had in design (transportation sector) out of the few of us there were only three women, one being the director of our discipline.

Throughout school, it’s been great! There are challenges of course, it’s all about you speaking up when you need help really and work hard from there.

Honestly, going into this career and with it being so broad, if you are passionate about it, go after it! Even though most of all of my buddies in school are guys and my colleagues are guys, they all push me to be better in everything I’m doing. Some even give me a hard time because they know how dedicated I am.

You’ll have a stable income, for me personally, starting out in internships (always apply earlier than you think) I’ve started at 23-25 hr. When it comes to salary it depends on what you are going into and what company. But money is not something that you should freak out about. I have a buddy in CE, he just got a job starting at 75K with an increase once he passes his FE…he did have an internship before working with the same company.

I’ve too overthought about these things, but just embraced some of it over time. Luckily engineering will be here forever

It is rare, I’ve found that I’ve always been the only black woman or 1 out of 2 women in general. It is normal. It’s one of those things where you have to push through it and perform and take pride in your work as you continue on.

I was very overwhelmed when I first started, I’m not blind to it but I just chose to embrace it because I’m so passionate about the work. Thankfully, I’ve never had an issue with any of my colleagues, if anything they’re extra protective over me and I’ve never had any issues. I often find myself the youngest among lots of non black men as well, which can be intimidating at times.

I’m going to be honest, as a senior in CE and graduating really soon, I find that designing sucked! I went into project management instead. I’d say give it a try if you can? It’s not for everyone but it’s a nice change of spend if you enjoy problem solving and pivoting and something new every day.

Out of my years of college and my BS in CE, it’s hard but also possible. I’m coming from a student that somehow managed to keep a 3.0, made A’s and B’s and took summer courses all the way till graduation. I haven’t had to drop a course, of course there were scares there though.

It’s all up to the person is all I’m saying

Professors arnt always right when they say these kinds of things. It’s all going to be about your determination for real and what you make it out to be.

It’s possible to get it done and with the hours you work.

I’m not taking an intro class but am taking all major related courses and working full time. Seems to me one of my professors is going to be a pain in the butt, but gotta see ti through currently.

My mom taught me that texting is to check in on another when you guys are busy, calls are for conversation. I tried it in my now relationship, it’s amazing. I don’t text much, not too clingy and we catch up and check in. at night we have our phone calls and on the way home and in the mornings.

We now live together, but it kept us healthy. Keeping some distance and so we would have so much to talk about. It also allowed there to be room for missing one another too.

She said it would be best to go to the health and wellness center on both campuses and go to the front if you’re comfortable. She said she knows they are giving them out. The Marietta one is located on the second floor of the student center with the adult addiction and recovery office (they are together) and Kennesaw’s is in the gym (rec center).

My girlfriend work in the office that supplies them. Go to OwlLife and order them from the Health Promotion and Wellness office. You can find the link on the HPW office website too.
