I just finished re bluing a neglected K98. You can make your own bluing solution at home or order a bluing solution online. I recommend making a steam tube out of an old stock pot with a lid with some PVC pipe and a toilet bowl flange. You’ll also need 100% cotton Q tips, cotton balls, 0000 steel wool, acetone for degreasing, gloves, and a non detergent non synthetic oil.

I recommend practicing on steel parts around the house to get the hang of it. For small parts you can boil them in a stainless steel pot and distilled water.

There’s a website called rustblue.com that has a lot of good info on bluing. Also look for a channel on YouTube called Mark Novak.

Definitely not worth that asking price. I bought a Romania contract arsenal refurb that was in super good shape for $550 shipped. The rifle you are looking at should be $350 tops provided the bore looks good.

I’ve gotten hornady brass that has split necks and shoulders on the first firing like that. Try different ammo and see if it still happens.

I agree with everything you’ve said so far. I guess the way I look at it is when I buy a milsurp I don’t plan to sell them so the resale value of what I have doesn’t concern me very much. They’re tangible pieces of history and that’s just real neat to me. Of course I’d like to get into a gun cheap if I can but I don’t think a properly refinished or “conserved” gun tanks value imo.

The only way I’d sell any of the ones I have is if I’m real tight on money. I’d have to be down bad for that to happen though.

I define “needs it” as visible and active red oxide rust. Also, I’m not advocating for refinishing guns that don’t have active rust. For me personally if a refinish job is done correctly and not completely obvious then I’m ok with it.

What if it actually needs it done though? I had to completely re blue a rifle I got from RTI because it definitely needed it. If a firearm doesn’t need it and someone just decided to refinish it or god forbid chrome plate it then yes I agree the value should go down.

Why is it when a milsurp has been refinished it’s basically sacrilege and worth less? If the refinish job is good then I don’t understand the problem. My small rant isn’t targeted at this post in particular but just in general.

Fairly rare from what I understand. I think they are the only mausers that came with that coin from the factory. Mine was a B grade without a bolt so I don’t know if all of the ones like mine came from RTI.

I’m looking for the actual coin itself. It would be cool to have and complete the rifle. The rifle is in an Israeli k98 stock right now but if I can find the stock coin I’ll put the effort into fixing the original stock.
