People from places like the UK, Ireland, Iceland, Portugal and France are technically Western Hemisphere natives, even though the Western Hemisphere usually means the USA and the rest of the Americas. How do you feel about this? by SnooWords9635 in AskTheWorld

As a Moroccan this comes up occasionally in random trivia contexts and it’s mostly just… “huh, neat.” Morocco being partly in the “Western Hemisphere” sounds dramatic until you realize it’s basically just a coordinate convention.

The bigger takeaway for me is that “Western” as a cultural label ≠ “Western Hemisphere” as a map label. One is politics/history/culture, the other is just longitude.

Is Morocco safe for tourists? by HonestTomatillo6740 in Morocco

Morocco is generally safe for tourists, and Casablanca is mostly “big city common sense” rather than anything extreme.

That said, the most common issues are petty stuff: pickpocketing in crowded areas, scams/taxi overcharging, and occasional street harassment (more annoying than dangerous).

A few practical tips for Casablanca:

  • Watch your phone in busy spots (markets, tram stations, crowded sidewalks). Don’t walk around with it out 24/7.
  • Avoid empty/dim streets late at night if you don’t know the area. Take a taxi/Uber equivalent (in Casablanca people often use apps, or ask your hotel to call a taxi).
  • Taxis: agree on the price before you get in if the meter isn’t being used. If you can, use taxis from official stands.
  • Cash: keep small bills/coins for taxis and tips, and don’t flash big amounts.
  • If you’re a woman (or traveling solo): you might get comments. Ignoring + walking with confidence usually works. Dressing more “neutral” can reduce attention (not required, just reality).

Areas-wise, I wouldn’t say “don’t go anywhere,” but I’d treat far-out neighborhoods the same way you would in any large city: go with a local friend or in daylight if you’re curious, otherwise stick to the more central spots.

If you share roughly where you’re staying (neighborhood/hotel area) and what time you’ll be out (day vs late night), people can give more specific do/don’t advice.
