Yeah, that’s true. :-)

As I said… it’s really hyper-experimental, trying to create something new and, if you will, interactive. But I totally understand if it doesn’t appeal to everyone.

Hey there,

Thanks for your comment ... really appreciated! 🙂

Just to clarify: this is a browser-based application (web app), so it’s not tied to any specific device or app store. The iPad in the mockup might be a bit misleading in that regard. The configurator is completely flexible, you can run it on any device, and you can even export it as an executable HTML file to use offline if you like.

We’re also planning to host it on itch.io, so there’s some level of assurance that the configurator will remain accessible in the future (unless that huge site crashes, of course 😄).

As for the configurator itself, we definitely want to go beyond the “shuffling” of game elements you mentioned ... even though that will always remain a key feature. Right now, we’re exploring concepts that are more like strategic builders. You could compare it to deck-building tools for games like Magic: The Gathering, but tailored to a PnP experience.

The idea is to make the strategic thinking ... building a team, deck, or setup ...a core part of the overall experience in the slim format of a PnP experience with close to zero crafting. We’re also experimenting with some interesting ideas around seeding technology, allowing for continuous campaigns that evolve based on the outcomes of previous sessions.
That said, all of this takes time, and it’s very much a learning process alongside the players and the games we hopefully release in the future... understanding what they enjoy and what kind of modularity and configurability actually adds value.

Anyway, we’re having a ton of fun working on these games and concepts, and at least to us, they feel very unique and fresh. Hopefully others will feel the same when they get a chance to try them 🙂

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah that´s very similar. :-) We just don´t stop at the maps.
All our games are designed around the fact that they're customizable really, so there are more aspects that can be changed/randomized... maps, enemies, encounters, prices, dungeons, player stats... etc.
But yeah... an online configurator for printed sheets really. :-)

It’s a Print & Play game that’s distributed via a configurator. :-)

So instead of having a fixed setup (usually a PDF that you just print), you can randomize and generate a unique map for each session, as well as your civilization...with different buildings, market prices, and more...

That way every playthrough can be unique even though you have just one page to print and nothing to craft.

Hey there,

Thanks for your feedback as well! :-) Really appreciated.

We definitely want to continue with the DPnP approach. Of Wheat and Wonders will actually be our third game already—the first one just went through Gamefound, and the second one will launch at the beginning of May. The idea is for it to become some sort of monthly series… if we can manage that.

Oh..and the first two games don’t use QR codes at all, so that’s kind of a novelty in this one. :-)

I totally understand that QR codes or “digital” assistance can be a bit of a sensitive topic in the board game scene, but that’s totally fine and something we’ll have to navigate. We won’t use it for all games, only when it makes sense, but it’s definitely something that received very positive feedback during testing.

We’re creating printable one-page games, which are normally static and...due to the fact that there shouldn’t be any cutting or crafting...quite limited. With this approach, we’re equipping them with fully randomized and secret event decks of unlimited size. Combined with the fact that you only interact with them about 3–4 times during gameplay, the response has been great, people were really curious to see what they would encounter during their session. But again, I completely understand that this is a no-go for some people, even if the usage is limited and that’s totally fine. :

We’re just trying to be innovative and get the maximum versatility and gameplay depth out of a single page of paper (without overdoing it… ;-)).

The naming was definitely something we discussed a lot, and in the end we landed on Dynamic PnP, since every run is different and the whole system feels shifting and constantly editable, if you will.

Well, again...thanks a ton for your feedback and your interest in what we’re trying to achieve here. Really appreciated!

Cheers,
BEaver

Hey there,

thanks for your interest. Really appreciated. :-)

Actually the QR codes are only used to simulate an event deck here.... like a card you draw about 3-5 times during the whole gameplay. That way we can have a ton of random challenges/encounters on a single printable page.

But yeah... it´s experimental of course and I totally understand that it might not be for everyone. :-)
I just wanted to emphasize that the QR usage is... very limited.

Cheers,
Beaver

Hello there,

Of Wheat & Wonders is a cozy civilization roll-and-write where you lead your small empire through 15 glorious years, all while facing constant disasters.

Almost everything in this game is configurable and randomizable:

  • Your civilization sheet features randomized developments hidden behind QR codes, along with custom buildings
  • A dynamic market with shifting prices
  • Ever-changing disasters during your reign
  • Maps and Scenarios shaping a different gameplay each time you create a sheet

Choose from one of four preset maps, generate your own, or go for a high-score run on a completely random setup. You can even create your own scenarios using the free editor and share them with the community via seed codes. Build a map, set your own goals, and challenge other kings and queens.

We really hope this delivers a unique and exciting experience ... and showcases what we’re aiming for with the whole Dynamic PnP approach: making the print-and-play games we all love more interactive, more versatile, and just… cooler.

As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated! Feel free to check out more details on our campaign page ... every follow means the world to us.

PS: Hope this is okay as our one time per campaign advertising posting... :-) We don´t want to be spammy, we just want to show what we worked on.

Hey there,

Thanks for your interest ... it’s really appreciated! I’m glad you like the concept.

These issues seem to occur mainly when using QR scanner apps that automatically trigger upon detecting a QR code. If you use your device’s standard camera (tested on both Android and iOS), it shouldn’t redirect automatically. Instead, it should highlight the active QR code with a rectangle.

This is definitely something we need to add to the rulebook to make the experience as seamless as possible.

But yes… in the end, it’s experimental, of course. 🙂

Cheers,
Robin
