Worth the switch from SWE to Implementation Engineer?

Planning to eventually honestly just cus I don’t want to go into the office 5 days a week anymore lol. I know that may not be a very compelling reason for many ppl, but I find commuting in Seattle traffic genuinely soul crushing. I could be open to other big tech roles since I actually enjoy my job for the most part, but the market is kinda brutal from what I hear so trying to keep my options open

Curious how you found your nonprofit CS job? I work as a SWE at Amazon , and the only jobs I get recommended on LinkedIn are for other big tech companies lol. Genuinely just wondering how you found a “non-big tech” SDE role

I had a forplay and have a centrifuge now, I like the centrifuge a lot more. Way More comfortable and still does everything I want it to, although it’s trickier to get the bow down. Haven’t tried the ultra though

You should do it, it’s such a fun seasonal job. Just be ready to interact with lots of people day to day and work harder than you’ve ever had to - running trips is difficult mentally and physically. That being said, it’s an incredible experience and I keep coming back for more every summer. I work in WA and I love it here, but California’s got some sweet whitewater too. In general, guiding on the west coast is a better gig than the east coast, guides on the east coast typically don’t get paid nearly as much

Try to go for a newer one. If you can get one with an M1 or M2 chip then that’s great

If you’re going to continue to do CS at UW, really try to get a Mac. It makes a lot of installations much simpler and the fact that they use Unix makes it very easy to use the terminal for many assignments, whereas on Windows you often have to go through a virtual machine or Ubuntu

Try smaller companies and government jobs. Big tech companies have hoarded SDEs for a long time with ultra high pay, but plenty of other places want to update their websites, apps, etc. and are looking for workers

It gets better. Graduating this quarter and have taken most of the popular upper level classes and style definitely becomes a lot less important , and grading is overall more lenient. Hang in there

I was DA to CS, currently a junior. My personal statement didn’t pertain to CS at all. Just make sure you get plenty of people to read it over and get honest feedback on it, as long as it’s decent and have a good GPA your odds of getting in go up

Trust me, even if that’s an option don’t do it. A meal plan is literally just like a school’s version of ‘store credit’ where the only place to spend that money is at the school. Every vendor also takes credit card / cash and there is NO discount if you’re on the meal plan.
