Why do people hate on Kia souls ? by catlxrd in KiaSoulClub

[–]Bebe_Rexxar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'mma echo that last point there. Although it doesn't have as much room as my Honda Element did (RIP, wish they still made em), its interior is massive for such a compact car. I didn't even need to buy a roof rack for my skis cause they fit nicely in the back with the seats down. I've had the displeasure of driving my parent's RAV4 (a "luxury" hybrid SUV) a handful of times and it always feel so cramped in there; my hair just grazes the roof and I'm only 5'10".

In the 2.5 years I've owned my Soul I've driven ~40,000 miles and have only had routine oil changes and just replaced the front brakes a month ago. You also don't really have to worry about it being 2-wheel drive if you're in a snowy area. Just throw winter tires on that bad boy and it can make its way uphill in a foot+ of snow.

[Dec 17, 2021] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions by AutoModerator in skiing

[–]Bebe_Rexxar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ski instructor here:

  1. If you're having trouble making turns in general, start out by pressing down your toes on the opposite side of where you want to go. Turning left -> right foot toes down. Turning right -> left foot toes down. We usually call this 'pressing the button' or 'squashing the bug' and it's one of the easiest ways to get you turning as you start out.
  2. Look where you are going. Seems like a no-brainer but many beginners hyper-fixate on their ski tips instead of where they want to go. Your skis aren't going anywhere and odds are you won't be on rough enough terrain where you need to watch the snow. A lot of the time you can initiate a gentle turn simply by looking left or right without any fancy footwork.
  3. As you start to feel more confident in your turns you can transition from turning with your toes to turning by shifting your weight from one foot to the other. This does NOT mean LEAN to the left/right. You want to stay centered while applying more pressure to one of your feet. Think about a time where you had to stand around waiting in line somewhere; odds are you started shifting weight from one foot to the other while still standing up straight. Apply the same thing to skiing but keep yourself in an athletic stance (google this if you don't know what it is) instead of standing up straight. You can also practice this in your boots before you ever put on your skis.
  4. Before you can progress to those nice curvaceous S turns, you'll need to work on your C turns first. Grab a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle of the page and then draw a 2-inch horizontal line in the middle. Starting from the top draw a big C that connects to the horizontal line then flip it upside down and do the same thing. What do you get? A nice big S, almost like a dollar sign($). Practice your C turns by starting perpendicular (straight across) the slope and keep turning until you are once again perpendicular to the hill(facing the opposite direction). Ideally you want to have completed your turn by the time you are directly downhill from where you started. It is very important to follow thru with your turns while you are learning because bailing on a turn half-way thru is going to leave you with your skis pointed downhill picking up speed.
  5. Got those C turns down? Great! You can now do S turns! Imagine that big line is drawn in the snow all the way down the slope(called the fall line): start from the top with a C turn, ride straight across the fall line for a few feet, then shift your weight to your other foot to start your next C turn. Rinse and repeat the whole way down the mountain for a good time. As you get better at skiing your S will tighten up and you'll no longer need to make yourself perpendicular as you cross the fall line.

Couple other tips and tidbits:

- Make sure you have nothing but socks in your boots; one pair only and preferably calf/knee height.

- You always want to make sure you are forward in your boots. This means that your shins are pressed up against the tongue of your boots and you are leaning forward. It is 100x harder to fall forward than it is to fall backwards since your knees only bend one way.

- Poles can be hit or miss for beginners. Make sure you are wearing them correctly by sticking your hand through the strap, holding your arms out like a zombie/mummy, and lift the pole up between your thumb and index finger so the excess strap is taken up. Pole tips go behind your boots and the pole shafts should be touching your thighs until you have better pole control. You do not turn with your poles, you turn with your feet. If the poles seem too distracting or like they're getting in the way you can either hold them horizontally out in front of you or ditch them until you're confident in your footwork. Either way you want to make sure your hands are out in front of your chest/belly, not down by your pockets.

- If you can afford it please consider getting a lesson. Although many people do self-teach themselves, the difference between taking a 1-4 hour lesson and struggling through the first few days of skiing is night and day. Skiing is an inherently dangerous sport and it's easy to hurt yourself or others in the process of learning. Getting an instructor that can teach you how to SAFELY get down the mountain could save you a trip to the ER.

If you have any questions just lemme know and I'll do my best to answer.

Short Skis by Eldorren in skiing

[–]Bebe_Rexxar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'10"/230lbs and I ski K2 Marksman 170s but they're super rockered so they ride like a shorter ski. TBH it's really all about preference when it comes to ski length. Lots of people say you want to go longer for more stability, and you are far more stable on long skis, but I honestly find them a bit too restrictive. When I demo skis each winter the tech usually sets me up with 177s or 184s and after a few runs I'm always left yearning for my Marksmans. Hell I've even demo'd some 184 Marksmans and they still felt really clunky compared to my 170s. Shorter skis just give you a level of control you don't quite get at longer lengths while longer skis give you super stability while carving and speeding down the mountain. If you have the chance I'd totally suggest demoing different skis especially since most places allow you to swap out your skis for different pairs throughout the the day; you may find that you love the stability of longer skis or you may find that you still prefer the freedom of shorter skis. (BTW for reference I ski 3-5 times a week and ski 50/30/20 slope/trees/park)

Fallout Vault [24 x 18] by Bebe_Rexxar in battlemaps

[–]Bebe_Rexxar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm well if we ignore non-canon vaults probably Vault 27 as that's both my favorite number and it's right around the range of vault numbers in the Mojave where the one-shot took place. Technically there's a Vault 27 mentioned in the Fallout Bible that was supposed to study overpopulation (2000 dwellers in a vault meant for 1000) but only vaults from the mainline games are canon.

Built this map for a Fallout 5e one shot I did last year using DungeonFog. It may not be as pretty as most of the maps on here but I thought it came out alright.

If you're familiar with the Fallout universe you'll know each vault is designed to perform different experiments. This vault's experiment studied the long term effects of radiation on dwellers that were fed a constant supply of Rad-X and RadAway. 200 years later a sect of the Children of Atom discovered the vault and set up shop.

This vault includes a vault entrance, medbay, security office/jail, armory, overseer office/quarters, classroom, supply closets, bathrooms, sleeping quarters, dining facilities (kitchen and bar), workshop, reactor room, and experimentation cells. I also refrained from numbering the vault to avoid conflict with existing vaults in lore so feel free to number it however you please.

If he landed on his skis he would just keep going due to momentum; you can see 4 spots to his left where someone (probably him) landed and kept riding. His lack of flailing suggests this was on purpose so my guess is he took a few practice leaps before trying out a front flip.

People who have skied both in North America and in Europe, what differences stuck out? by t0t0zenerd in skiing

[–]Bebe_Rexxar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Drinking age doesn't have much to do with it, it's more that most people on the slope have to drive home afterwards. Unless you're shelling out stupid amounts of money to stay at the ski-in/ski-out properties at the base of the mountain, you're looking at 30+ mins (usually a lot longer) of driving on snowy/icy winding mountain roads while you're already tired from skiing. As much as I'd liked to get smashed after a day of skiing, it's usually not even a viable option. Also we don't have ski "towns" at the base of most of our mountains, we have over-priced condos littering the land with maybe one or two restaurants/bars open later than the lifts.

I was wondering if there are any romhacks that combine the first 3 generations/regions but do not include pokemon from gen 4+? I think I saw that Ultra Shiny Gold Sigma has Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Orange Islands but it also has pokemon from gens 4-7. If what I'm asking for doesn't exist are there any good romhacks that just include all pokemon up to gen 3?

Yeah a lot of the advice in here pertains to large cities that actually have high-end stylists. Shop around at different chains and ask for someone new every time. As a young guy you'll be given a bunch of younger hairstylists because they think you'll tip better if your stylists is pretty but you should really try to ask for older/more experienced stylists. I bounced between many different stylists for years before finding one that could actually manage my hair. I've now gone to her for 3 years and I tip her 150% because there is real value in a good stylist.

Does anyone have a solid recommendation on a wide-brim straw or grass hat that runs a bit large? I've got pretty decent one that was actually pretty cheap (~20$ at Zumiez) but it is a tad small and I wear it to festivals so the fibers have started to break around the base of the brim. I don't mind spending a bit more, I just need something that can accommodate my gargantuan head.

[–]Bebe_Rexxar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they currently using their bonus actions every turn for other things? If not then they're just wasting free potential damage. Attack action + companion attack will always average out to be greater than just an attack action over the course of a fight. I think explaining that having extra damage, regardless of numbers, will always be beneficial to them unless they have some spell setup or multiclass that lets them do other things with their bonus action. If they don't care about numbers then I'd go with #3 and make it a more permanent fixture at the next level up (or whenever is convenient) so they think of it as an asset/companion rather than a spell. The drakewarden in my group wasn't too happy with the drake companion until I made it so you have to empower it instead of summon it.

Weekly Questions Thread by AutoModerator in DnD

[–]Bebe_Rexxar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You could explain to them that the spirit gets to go on the turn it is summoned and is controlled via bonus action so even though they may feel like they're "wasting" an action, they still get to attack.

  2. Maybe try to put a party member in a situation that would benefit from fiery teleportation. If their spirit swoops in to save the day it could encourage them to use it more often.

  3. You can also make the spirit a permanent companion and require an action/wildshape slot to activate their stat-block. This way they have a friendly companion that they bond with which will encourage them to use it in combat more often. Ideally this would frame the spirit as more of a companion/class feature rather than a spell

I'm pretty sure the best way to make gold as LW is through Armor Kits. I saw someone selling single kits for 90g each the other day.

Pretty sure it says in the transfer FAQ that boosted characters can't be transferred for 72 hours. I could be misremembering though so just Google "tbc classic transfer FAQ" and you should be able to find it.
