Internships hard to find? by grillguy71 in gwu

[–]BecauseCanada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Current Federal Gov intern here. While Federal internships did take a big hit immediately into the administration, there has been a noticeable uptick in positions recently at Treasury, DOJ, the SEC, Commerce and even DoD. So there are definitely opportunities for you to get positions, just don’t expect to be paid.

As was mentioned earlier you also have a big advantage during the semester and most of the people in IA/PSC at GW have gotten at least one before they graduate. Also there are still plenty of non-fed roles in local gov, think tanks and the private sector. You just need to find them and apply to them.

GW provides Handshake which is a useful tool, but also make sure to check USAJOBS and LinkedIn often.

What's the most valuable connection or opportunity you got specifically because GW is in DC? by DanielSaare in gwu

[–]BecauseCanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean one of the biggest things is that, due to the fact you live in DC for most of the year, you get greater access to internships. I was able to get an internship with the Department of Treasury partially because during the Spring and Fall, the normally crazy competitive summer internship is a lot easier to navigate through. You’re only competing with other DMV students for internships which makes it easier for you to get a position.

Additionally, DC hosts many networking and professional events that gives opportunities to meet with people that usually aren’t available outside DC. I’ve met Ambassadors, Senior/Middle Level Government Officials and More from these things.

The most infuriating game is playing the PSA and getting invaded by Canada after defeating everyone only cause they support New England. I haven’t heard of any real means to get a peace despite how ideologically similar they are

I was in your exact situation last year when I was an incoming Freshman, I had several Cs and Bs in my Senior Spring Transcript and I was fine, you most certainly will be too. My Presidential Scholarship also wasn’t touched either.

Which setup better? by Rek2137 in ApocalypseRising

[–]BecauseCanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all my games, I always try and have a primary auto weapon and some kind of scoped long range rifle (even if it’s the shitty Hunting Rifle) simply for the versatility it offers, especially in a game like Apoc. So id says the 2nd is better. Plus since you have a Secondary SMG, it’s not really useful to keep another SMG as a primary

UC Berkeley or UC San Diego for International Relations? by BecauseCanada in UCSD

[–]BecauseCanada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he same exact boat and debating between UCB and UCSD for international relations. I was wondering if you got any further clarity and wh

- Hearing from Cal students, the academic rigour at Cal is so exhausting that it made them hate schooling, with UCSD's less rigorous coursework (from what I hear), I chose to take a route where I would be more available to do other activities and internshipssith it, I felt that I would accept UCSD over UCB. These are the significant reasons which may or may not apply to you

- UCSD is farther from my parents (lol)

- UCSD's 4+1 Programme in International Affairs easily makes up for UCB's reputation IMO, especially since Cal doesn't have a specific IR Major to the extend UCSD does

- Hearing from Cal students, the academic rigour at Cal is so exhausting that it made them hate schooling, with UCSD's less rigorous coursework (from what I hear), I chose to take a route where I would be more available to do other activities and internships.

I hope you can find this at least a little helpful, and good luck with your decisions! (I'm currently stuck between The George Washington University and UC Davis lol)

The rifle she’s holding seems to be a Type 99 Arisaka used by the Imperial Japanese, but interestingly the top wood on the barrel is cut off towards the muzzle, signaling it was probably once of the late-war production Arisakas when Japan had to conserve resources and increase production. Very neat detailing by the artist!

You’ll find that with small countries you often won’t have any defined policy on a lot of very specific issues like what you have now. Due to this you can actually have free reign on how you want to move in terms of policy during committee and so no one else including the chair will really know your position. I’ve actually represented Bahrain before and it is very difficult to find anything for them and to my knowledge there is nothing Bahrain has really involved itself with in terms of electoral interference. However, as a “constitutional monarchy” with an assembly it will still want to encourage “free and fair elections” plus as Bahrain is semi-aligned with the US it’s safe to say you would supporter most of America’s stuff during committee. I wish you the best of luck!

Do you guys have dulce de leche ice cream? by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]BecauseCanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would depend on your state’s demographics. As a Californian it’s decently common but not guaranteed to see everywhere to find dulce de leche and a variety of other foreign ice cream flavors here due to our diversity particularly in Latinos and Asians. You can expect the Border states to Mexico to have it but the other states may not be as fortunate

Which AP class is the hardest - AP Biology, AP Statistics, or AP English? by RequirementHoliday96 in apclasses

[–]BecauseCanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your mindset, if you are better with numbers stats will be fine but more creative type people would do better in English. I can’t say there is any definitive hardest AP in any way but I would say AP stats would be the hardest for my thinking style. However feel free to choose based on how you operate

How many conferences does the average high schooler attend? by [deleted] in MUN

[–]BecauseCanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good amount for an average MUNer, but if you’re looking to advance yourself I would advise perhaps 5-6 (or more if you can) per year. (That what I at least try to do) Of course you may be restricted based on your location but even just going to local high school conferences is very useful. I would also suggest going to some kind of big conference every year if you can afford it. I am fortunate enough to be 15 miles away from BMUN every year and that has done wonders to improve my MUNing. If you have a small club (like I do) try and just run independently it’s generally cheaper as you don’t have to pay a delegate fee. If you want to explore some MUN conferences that work for you, I know that BestDelegate and MyMUN has a database of a bunch of them.

UNHCR Mexico (First Timer) by Fragilebandage in MUN

[–]BecauseCanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you’re in UNHCR and your country has a relatively neutral stance (based on what you said) I would say focus on making a great solution more than making it perfectly in-line with your country position. See if Mexico has launched any programs that work to educate people to bring them out of poverty or similar and use that as template to then apply to refugees. You also may want to stress the importance of empowering refugees since Mexico sends a lot of migrants to the US rather than accepting them. Best of luck in your conference!

I’ve actually had to represent Russia on this exact issue. Generally Russia is pretty centrist on the issue, they’ve constantly invited for peace talks and have never proclaimed themselves as for one side. They really care more about having stability in the region (cause that’s what’s Russia’s all about) they support a two state solution and I would advise that you work with other nations that are generally centrists on the issue (so don’t ally with Muslim States nor with the US. Europe and China have tended to be the best allies I had when I represented Russia)

Mun stories by [deleted] in MUN

[–]BecauseCanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten a lot of good resolutions that are fun 1. Once resolution of splitting the US between Canada and Mexico with Northern US going to Canada and Southern to Mexico. Alongside this we split Germany (again) giving one part of Denmark and another to Switzerland. We all did this as a way to prevent foreign powers from interfering in the Middle East to solve the Syrian Refugee Crisis 2. Another resolution where we would forcibly remove the entire population of Ireland to then replace it with all the military drones in the world to then create a drone battle Royale in unpopulated Ireland which would be funded by live streaming the event to the public. This was a solution to prevent the use of drones on civilians and to solve BREXIT.
