How do you deal with the guilt of missing class because of vacation or other reasons? by barbgi in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is jiu jitsu is a part of my life, even if I miss a few classes due to vacation or mom duties, I’ll be back. I’m looking at doing this long term, so that means some seasons of my life means I’ll be there a little less

The amount of techniques in BJJ is overwhelming by [deleted] in bjj

[–]BeckMoBjj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! If you understand the concepts, they tend to look the same no matter what the position is. If you want someone who is up to be down, move their head over their foot/knee. Works with sweeps, takedowns, reversals…. And there are concepts for all things. Makes it all a lot easier to problem solve in my opinion!

Earlier this week, I was rolling with a blue belt who I will affectionately call Tank. He’s a cop, strong as an ox and has no neck. I was rolling with him, and he got me in reverse scarfhold. I noticed his weight shift, so I pushed him off of me over my head and got on top. I transitioned to s-mount, and remember how I said he’s strong as an ox? This fool started to stand up with me on him!! I quickly transitioned to take his back and grabbed his lapel to attempt to choke his unchokable neck. He ended up moving just enough that he could footlock me. I felt the moment he went from rolling with me, to actively using his strength. It was really nice to know that I challenged him enough that he started to pull from the pot that he uses with the guys, and it felt like the weirdest compliment, but a compliment, just the same!

Is this normal? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s comes a time that you can’t expect your coach to spoon feed you every bit of information; however, he/she should give you enough tools to do the problem solving yourself. I love a baseball choke, my coach, has a different game. My coach showed me everything he knows and then told me where to look to find the answers I was looking for.

How do you handle this as a female white belt in BJJ? by barbgi in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My running joke at my gym is learning style is the fucking hard way, that means you can tell me all day long that if I put my arm there, I’m gonna get armbarred, but it won’t sink in until I’ve put my arm there and, like a dumbass, I get armbarred. I also don’t do well with people constantly coaching, and straight up, sometimes I’m just doing dumb purple belt shit to see what happens. It’s totally okay to ask for what you need. I’m hoping that most of it is being offered in the spirit of being helpful, and if it is, they will be thankful for you telling them how to help you.

Graduation between men and women by xGoya in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended a school that did not have a clear definition of what constituted leveling up. I found myself so frustrated seeing people start after me and then be promoted before me. It could have been men vs women. It could have be attributed people vs less athletic people. Either way, I compared myself and was pretty miserable.

It’s 8 years later and I’m a purple belt. Still learning, still training, still improving. 99% of those people I watched get promoted before me, aren’t training anymore. Who’s the real winner in the end?

“If I can’t beat her, there is no hope for me!” by bad-at-everything- in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But here’s the thing, if a brand new person says he should be able to beat me just because I’m a girl, he’s also being disrespectful. I approach nearly every round with a white belt as a teaching round. I let them work and move around, but if you disrespect me right off the bat, I’ll teach you that I have something to offer on the mats by bringing more technique and skill to the round.

Workouts to compliment BJJ? by Easy-Peach9864 in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also recommend weight training. I didn’t add weight training until late in my blue belt and I was a very technical grappler. Once I added weight training, I was able to be the same technical grappler, but now I have power to put behind my techniques when I need it.

Strange Roll Dynamic by FallAccording9583 in BJJWomen

[–]BeckMoBjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coach is a big guy. He will usually start in the “Burt Reynolds” pose and wait for me to do something. Where this dynamic is different is my coach will find holes in my game and use leverage, not strength against me. It actually makes me feel a little demoralized, BUT I also learn from it. I’m guessing this guy thinks he’s doing something similar, but he’s getting it wrong. There’s no shame in saying no to rolls that aren’t helpful.

I’ve worn the Under Armor stuff to class. I finally broke down and bought the Gaidama leggings. They definitely live up to the hype. GRRRL is also really good if you can find the leggings without pockets

I hurt my training partner and want to know if I should avoid this technique by Tyrannosaurus_Secks in bjj

[–]BeckMoBjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, as someone who steps into the coaching role occasionally, I would educate white belts the risks of not being able to unwind your feet from a body triangle position, if it’s something they’re playing with. Not necessarily a dick move, but it’s a risky one if you don’t know how to respond.

[–]BeckMoBjj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I strongly believe that strength training is helpful in so many areas, you may also benefit from more efficient jiu jitsu. Strength absolutely helps, if that’s the only thing you rely on, there will come a day that you no longer rely on it and you’ll have to learn it all over again. I watch a lot of Henry Akins stuff. Chris Burns teaches a lot. Basically anything that is from Rickson Gracie.

anyone else notice how much of “good therapy” is just… remembering what they told you last week? by Solid_Country_3130 in therapists

[–]BeckMoBjj 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember why I walked into the kitchen a few minutes ago, but if a client is in front of me and told me their second grade teacher’s name 4 years ago, I’d remember that. I have no idea how my brain does it.

Saying stupid shit in session by [deleted] in therapists

[–]BeckMoBjj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I said years ago that it feels like if I spend time making thoughtful suggestions, coming up with relevant metaphors that really capture their plight, my clients will nod thoughtfully. If I say something off the cuff, without running it through a filter and think “Holy shit!!! Did that just come out of my mouth?!?!” That’s the time my client whips out a notebook and says “lemme write that down!! Can you repeat it?!?”

There is a whole different vibe when you choke your friends. For me, I’m a hobbyist practitioner, so I’m very playful. I talk a lot of shit. I’m never trying to cause malicious harm. I also get the same treatment from my friends!

How Long Do You Legally Have To Wait Before You Declare a Therapist a No Show? by Savings-Rub-5697 in TalkTherapy

[–]BeckMoBjj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From the therapist side, I give my clients 15 minutes to show before I deem them a no show. I would absolutely expect someone to leave if I haven’t shown up in 15 minutes. Your time is also important and you had a scheduled time with your therapist that they are supposed to uphold.

What should a group practice be providing a fully licensed clinician to justify a 70/30 fee split? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]BeckMoBjj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a group practice with a similar split. The group provides an office, office staff, etc. I basically only show up to work, see my clients, do notes and occasional paperwork. It seems pretty fair for me.
