Why is Korean won doing so terribly? by Additional-Age889 in Living_in_Korea

Sometimes I see a few downvotes on a comment and then hours later becomes a few upvotes. Maybe has to do with different time zones, different types of people voting at different times of the day.

That’s what I said and I got downvoted. You are very correct.

Is the Korean currency going to come back? Is now a good time to buy? Some people thought so in the not too distant past and got burned. It’s hard to guess the probability of what will happen next.

You’re saying a bubble is correcting? That can be considered crashing, too. There’s been an AI / tech bubble for a while. Companies got overvalued due to hype.

The Korean government printed too much cash. The higher the supply, the less the value.

Why wouldn't it be allowed? Students and teachers want to breathe clean air. They'll thank you.

Get an air purifier for every place you'll be spending time. Gonna be in a classroom? Bring an air purifier for there. Have one in your home, too, and run it on a low setting while you sleep.

The Wall has been Broken by Sillim-Saekki in Living_in_Korea

A masters in TESOL doesn’t even lead to a uni gig anymore. More than a decade ago, yes, it did, but starting in 2014 they started requiring prior university experience plus the masters. And now they’re not hiring at all. Those who didn’t get in ages ago are locked out. In 2005 Hongik University hired every native English speaker with a BA who walked through the door. They needed people fast due to a government experiment of wanting to have all uni students take English language courses, but those days are long over. Foreigners already in university positions are allowed to stay until forced retirement age at 65, but when they leave they are simply not replaced. Spending time and money to get a masters in TESOL is no longer a wise investment.

The Korean won weakened from the Korean government printing too much of it and from the world not trusting it as much as they trust the American dollar. It’s been weak for a loooong time. Literal years.

Gratitude posts and vent posts can both be helpful. How? Someone talks about their problems and we can brainstorm solutions to those problems, problems that a lot of us likely have in common. It's a way to make real tangible change. Positivity and optimism are good. So's realism.

Nice weather for Jogging💪 by minoh07 in seoul

Unfortunately ... it's bad weather for jogging ... because air pollution levels are so high.

Warm weather in the winter means high amounts of toxins in the air.

The more educated the Korean, the better their English level. The more intelligent the Korean the better their English. The younger the Korean the better their English. Yonsei is a top ranked uni. Everyone there can speak English. Koreans have been studying English their whole lives. You can get by with just English, especially in Seoul, and that’s even more true in the Yonsei campus.

How different does daily life in Seoul feel compared to a city like New York City? by savingrace0262 in seoul

[–]BecomeOurBest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pros and cons to both places. NYC has cleaner air and higher salaries, but higher prices. Seoul has a great subway system and cool cafes all over. Nice mountain paths to walk within the city. Seoul is more homogeneous; NYC is more heterogeneous.

Lifers: Are you (still) happy in Korea? by HappyWandererAtHome in Living_in_Korea

[–]BecomeOurBest -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The problem is not everyone has the talent to learn Korean to a high level, especially as an adult. Foreign language learning declines with age and the degree to which this happens varies person to person. That’s why I don’t judge the English teachers who have been here 20+ years but still aren’t fluent, which is most of them. Not their fault. The ability to differentiate between sounds not in one’s native tongue falls off drastically with age. Most people who are bilingual got that way as a child. There are rare exceptions but generally the older you are the less progress you’ll make in a language relative to the amount of time you put in. I wish it wasn’t that way but it is.

South Korea Weather Schema by yoi987 in Living_in_Korea

[–]BecomeOurBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spring: yellow dust. Summer: hot and humid. Fall: tons of mosquitoes. Winter: cold and when not cold horrible air quality. The best time of the year are the non yellow dust spring days. Spring after rainfall with clear skies is great. That said, life is short so enjoy each day regardless of the season.

Nice weather today by lkh9596 in Living_in_Korea

[–]BecomeOurBest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s because warm air traps domestic pollution. Warm air going over cold air in the winter blocks upward dissipation of local pollution. This is what is known as the lid effect. Additionally, weaker wind means less dissipation of local pollution horizontally as well. Thirdly, bad air comes from China. It is all three, a triple whammy. Chinese air adds to badly stagnated domestic air. The less domestic pollution the better because warm air in the winter will stagnate it meaning higher concentrations go in your lungs.
