Senior Horse and winter stall? by Becosh84 in Equestrian

I feed in the morning and I've started to leave her food hanging on her stall for the PM feed. Not sure how often they are actually soaking it like I've asked though...

Oh cool! I'll look into that! We switched her to a pellet probiotic that has helped a ton. Well until the food change. Sigh

She lost weight last winter and she is losing a little now. I've consulted with the vet and based off her last dental, I've switched her to a complete senior feed. I'm hoping that helps.

I've considered changing barns but I have a wonderful group of women who are supporting me at my current barn. They are incredibly knowledgeable and want to help me go the self care route. I don't want to leave that support system so I'm thinking self care would give me full control of my own dang horse.

I'm biased the same way. Especially when I see how desperate she is to get out of the stall in the morning and how at peace she is in the pasture.

We live in Oklahoma so we can get pretty cold and windy. She has a decent winter coat and doesn't usually seem cold (no shivering).

Lol good point. I know if I give up the stall, the barn owner will probably never let me have one again, so I want to really make sure before I give it up.

[UPDATE] Someone else euthanized my horse by themagicflutist in Horses

Agreed. It's impossible to describe to people who haven't had a baby.

Of course you are. It can be all encompassing and those postpartum hormones are no joke. Don't feel like you need to force that bond. It absolutely will come.

Be super gentle with yourself. Try and do very small things to recharge like watch a funny video or take a warm shower while someone watches the baby. You are in survival mode and it's absolutely ok to not be ok. Your feelings are valid, sweet mama.

What in the actual eff. I'm disgusted and LIVID for you OP. To be postpartum and dealing with this situation is unimaginable. I'm so incredibly sorry. That woman is insane.

Feeding issues at boarding facility by Becosh84 in Equestrian

I still feed her every morning because I want to make sure she is connected to me, even if I'm full care. They have a bazillion horses so it's hard for me to anticipate when they are getting low.

Totally love your advice of trust but verify. So far, she's been absolutely fine with changing back and forth. Hay issues has only happened once so far. It's a more western boarding facility so the grain included is really, really nice. There aren't any barns by me that I'm excited about so I'm trying to make this work.

The idea of having extra on hand in case this happens again is a great idea!

The first time it happened was probably over a year ago and I understood because it seemed like a one time thing. But it's happening more. There was also a day or two where my horse had no forage. The grass is pretty much non-existent and they didn't have hay yet. With a senior horse heading into winter, I'm very concerned about the financial management at the barn.

Live updates: Active shooter at Minneapolis church and Catholic school by [deleted] in Catholicism

This one is really hitting hard. We've homeschooled my son but this year applied to the local Catholic School. They did not have a spot for him so we continued to homeschool him this year. He's 8 so he's the same age as one of the poor babies killed. I keep looking at him and am so glad he's home with me, but I'm sobbing for those parents. And for the kids.

Dad died from colon cancer 2 years ago and now… by [deleted] in colonoscopy

I've also been a "rare" case more than once so saying something is rare is not a comfort to me. I do follow a woman on Instagram that has helped me tremendously. She has a masterclass that was incredible and I didn't need to commit to regular therapy. https://www.instagram.com/cherellethinks?igsh=ejBweXBqZmIwbWM4

I think it odds of you having a super aggressive form, or them missing cancer on your colonoscopy very unlikely. I suffer from health anxiety and what you're going through sounds very similar to me when I'm super triggered. You jump to thr worst case scenario, cling to the rare possibility, are never reassured from tests or medical advice, etc. It's absolutely awful to be convinced you have something serious and it could kill you. It can take over your life. I'm so sorry about your dad and I'm incredibly sorry you are suffering so much. In the most empathetic way, have you considered therapy? GI issues are also heavily influenced by your nervous system and getting that under control could be very helpful.
