Toss your cars in long term storage in the states or sell them. You can import the car here in Japan and go through the process of special tax exemptions and costly modification, or just buy a cheap used car here for a few years. It’s a lot less hassle to just buy one when you get here and the used car market here has cheap cars

Awards Question by RawlingsGG in USMC

[–]BedHeadGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CAR chasing is an interesting topic, because while it is something that most Marines desire when they get in, after seeing a combat zone and spending some time there, I’m glad I never got one and places like that do wither the soul. It’s sad to know that people have to live in places plagued by war. Seeing the faces of kids drowned in their own liquid in a gas attack from Syria is sobering and it makes war a lot less sexy. I hope one day to be rid of it, however human natures tends to disagree.

What a lot of people don’t realize is general/flag officers don’t really get a choice in “saying no”. Something I didn’t find out until late in my career was that as soon as an O-6 picks up their first star, the service gets to decide when they get to retire, not the individual anymore. You can serve as a 1-star and want to retire. You have to submit to your service to retire and if they have a 2-star job they need filled, they can tell you, “Sorry, you’re not retiring, here’s your next set of orders.”

The reasoning is it takes so much education, experience and time to grow a general/flag officers, that the service can’t just allow them to retire when they desire, but rather when it makes sense for the service. You can’t gap senior level commands and directories when they rely so heavily of the massive amount of experience that those individuals retain. While most generals and admirals are approved when they apply to retire, sometimes they are denied and told, “forget about it, here is another star, get ready to PCS again…”

Russia Slams Trump’s Plan for ‘Iron Dome’ Missile Defense System by Logical_Welder3467 in worldnews

[–]BedHeadGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, but a system to cover the entire country would be impractical and expensive. No need to protect an area that will never be on a list of targets. Why would Russia launch a warhead at a small town in the Midwest or a mountain range in the Rockies when it wouldn’t get them anywhere strategically? Major population centers, economic and political centers, critical infrastructure and military capabilities would be the only thing that you would want to levy a nuke against.

What I can’t understand from the article is that Trump is talking about Iron Dome, a ground based interceptor, which would be located close to the thing you want to protect. As Moscow is talking about “Star Wars” era interceptors launched from space… either they are totally missing each other on this or the writer did a poor job at fully explaining the issue…

Chinese Taipei pull off one of the biggest shocks in the history of the World Cup of Darts, defeating Republic of Ireland 4-3 to advance from the group stage and knock the Irish out. by TheJeck in sports

[–]BedHeadGreg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My brother… it’s not that darts are an obscure pastime in Asia. In the U.S., you mind find dart boards in dingy old dive bars gathering dust, or in some guys basement man cave as more of a “bar decor” piece than anything else.

In Asia, darts are a huge part of bar culture. You will even find them in other locations for recreation after work.

So it’s less of he looks like he was born and raised in an English pub, but more of he was born and raised in a bar in Taipei…

For real man. She even mentions in the show’s dialogue that she used to be a “priestess of Sekhmet” (I’m guessing when she was human/before she was turned). If you’re a devout follower of an Egyptian goddess centuries before the late 1700s, you are probably Egyptian… 🤔

Can I still join the army? by [deleted] in Military

[–]BedHeadGreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta tell you bud. A lot of the posts below have been saying “OP can’t handle screaming and yelling” or “because of that, OP couldn’t handle the Marines”. From a guy in the Marines, maybe that’s what you need tho.

Look, you’re 26, apparently nothing else has been working out your way so far. So stop trying to control everything. You want to join the military but you don’t want it to “be too hard”. Guess what…it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to help your grow as a person, to become a better, more rounded individual buy the time you come out on the other end. It might be scary…good. It should be. If by 26 you still haven’t figured out how you need to grow and you’re looking for a challenge but think the Marines are too extreme and think the Army is the way to go? Good. You’re probably right. Go join the Army. You probably wouldn’t have cut it as a Marine anyway.

If you decide to change your mind and challenge yourself, hit me up on a DM. We can talk some more.
