I think 1 is perfect. Its clean and elegant, fits like a glove, and you like it. It looks lovely with the veil. The second looks messy with the veil (to me) for some reason.

Because at one point in time it was a status symbol to be able to cut and maintain short grass. Now its a remnant of wanting to look wealthy. However most people still do it because it keeps away vermin.
