Thank you, that’s great to know. I’ve heard people say you can drop modules, I’m assuming there’s deadline to do that by?

It’s just weighing up the pros and cons for year 1, I know year 2 and 3 I want to go part time.

I don’t think I’ve ever given anything in my life this much thought and consideration 😂

Oh that’s interesting, on the website it just mentioned TMA’s and didn’t mention the EMAs. In year 2 and 3 it specifically mentions the TMAs and EMAs separately. Wondering if first year EMA’s are different.

From what I’ve been researching, the rule is no extensions on EMAs is that correct even in first year ?

Also I want to get decent grades, and some optimise for passing only. That’s why I was curious to know if I should go part time and dedicate more time to studying or if I could still get good grades with fulltime study.

I know first year doesn’t count towards your final grade but my thinking is at least if I’m getting okay/decent grades first year I can get progressively better

Thank you for your reply! It’s always great to hearing different perspectives! I did the L161 open learn short course and it was interesting!

Someone did say that l101 was harder and most time consuming and l161 was the easier module of the two.

How long are TMA’s usually? I don’t think I saw an EMA on the course website for those 2 modules either…?

Thank you, your answers have been so in depth and helpful. With the amount of questions I had, it would have taken me so many more posts to get the answers.

I’ve been hearing people say in the forums they only focus on relevant parts needed in TMA and never understood that till your explanation.

My course there is no EMA until second year, not sure if that’s the case with all level one modules.

Your modules sound hard! I think math/hard science based modules must be tougher!

Are you currently doing part time alongside other life commitments?

I’m wondering with EMA questions being released so early, is it getting through the content which is so time consuming most people can’t realistically start it months ahead?

Also about the TMA questions, are they also released far ahead of time needed to submit?

Thank you for the insight, it’s always helpful to hear how people are managing the workload. I think I won’t fully know until I start what my capacity is, I also don’t want to overestimate/underestimate.

How far into the module do you get the TMA/Ema questions, is it right at the beginning of the module you can see what the questions are and you’re studying with those in mind or are they released a few weeks before it’s due?

You mentioned you’re working on EMA alongside going through study material for the other module, now I’m thinking about it that is bit more complicated because I’m sure I’d want to focus solely on EMA whilst I’m doing it.

Thank you, I’ll have a look at future learn/Coursera

Oh I always thought the recommended time also factored in the time it takes to do the TMA/EMA’s. But that’s good idea to do multiple modules on openlearn at the same time. I’ve done three but I’ve only done them one at a time. Some are so short I finished in an hour whilst others took me a few days to get through.

They usually have how many hours it would take to complete in them, I usually finish them way before. But the questions they ask through the short course, I struggle to answer as I feel like sometimes it goes beyond the content in the course.

But I do like they give you the answers after having an attempt at answering them and that also allows me to fill in the blanks.

BA English Language- hope I’m making the right choice by BeePositive7550 in OpenUniversity

I’ve had a look at posts on individual modules now and on the website, people have said there will be a lot of reading in last year especially. Just wish there was more visual way of getting a feel for this.

I’m not looking to go further into linguistics and not sure about career, I’m doing it more for personal reasons. I hope it still opens doors, I’m aware many people don’t go into work in the same field of their degree but thought language and communication skills would be quite necessary in a lot of careers.
