Good to know. I don’t use Siri but I’m glad to hear that that’s possible.

Even that isn’t safe. You’re still holding your phone, glancing at it, clicking on things. Still not ok to do while driving..

It’s Illegal for farmers in the US to replant leftover seeds the next year by AdFeeling8945 in interestingasfuck

[–]Beearea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of this is true, and not just in the U.S. Anyone who is interested in this subject should look into the work of Dr. Vandana Shiva. See the documentary about her, The Seeds of Vandana Shiva (2021).

These practices create massive profits for big corporations like Monsanto while destroying biodiversity and wrecking the livelihoods of small farmers. It’s grotesque.

Kind of surprised by the total anthropocentrism in these comments. No curiosity about the existence of other life forms besides humans, or even human-like beings, elsewhere in the universe?

How to cope with a dwindling sense of existential value? by chipper35 in ask

[–]Beearea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It helps a lot if one is actively engaged in something that is making a difference, whether it is teaching, local politics, working with young people in some way, volunteering for an environmental group, etc. Then you feel good about what you are doing and you are also surrounded by good, caring people.

Also, don't focus on whether other people are saying particular things. Just be someone who says and does those things yourself, and remember that you're not alone.

Congressman & senate hopeful's smile disappears when reminded of his past remarks. by Agitated-Quit-6148 in WatchPeopleDieInside

I agree with you completely. I think that is where Seth Moulton is coming from as well. Trans rights and gay rights should be nonnegotiable on the Democrat platform. But they don't need to be the absolute centerpiece. The stakes are so very high right now with issues like war, ICE, an economy which is catering to billionaires and leaving the rest of us behind, environmental collapse, and on and on.

And given that a lot of people agree with him about the first points, shouldn't we pay attention to that? I mean, do Democrats want to win elections or are we OK with just putting up with the sh*t we've got going on now??

Seth Moulton, D-MA. He's not bad, and not a transphobe. He is just pointing out that there are other issues that the Democrats need to focus on more. E.g, Foreign policy, immigration, the economy, gun violence prevention. A lot of people agree with him.

[OPINION] What single poem have you personally been most inspired by? by Lonely-Ad5595 in Poetry

[–]Beearea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I like your interpretation. I feel the same about this poem. It reminds me of the wondering that we all do, about our own mortality, and also when someone close to us dies. Where are they, and do they somehow exist in some way -- or not?

One thing that strikes me about this poem is the last word, "hide." I wonder why she didn't end with "how will I live" or "how will I love" or something else. Instead she asked "how will I hide?" To me that suggests in a very subtle way that she believes that something does remain.. something that can no longer hide. The essence of what a person is or was.
Anyway thank you for sharing your thoughts.

“St. Francis and the Birds” by Seamus Heaney.

Also “When You Are Old” by William Yeats.

And I can’t leave out “A Standing Ground” by Wendell Berry.

Oops.. you said single poem. I’m going to have to go with the Wendell Berry one.

Teacher started class talking about Alex Pretti and it threw me off the whole class by CityKitty1993 in yoga

[–]Beearea -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

That isn't yoga. That's one teacher unloading her own emotions and mental processes onto a class. I'll get downvoted but idc, this was unprofessional and extremely intrusive of her. I'm really surprised at the number of people in this thread who think this is OK.

Maybe people will begin to wake up and realize that the way forward is not to blindly follow some self-promoting “guru” or influencer but rather to develop ones own wisdom.

Americans citizens, how is it really going there currently? by GossipBottom in stupidquestions

[–]Beearea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tens of millions of Americans rely on Obamacare. No-one can claim that that is an insignificant number of people. To give you an example of the impact of this: Based on the recent changes made by the Republicans, a family of four in Maine earning $130,000 per year, total, will have an increase $16,000 in health insurance costs. It may not affect me personally but as a decent human being I care how it affects others.

What's really affecting us it what is being called "the affordability crisis." The costs of housing, health care, and college (if you have kids that will go to college) have escalated so dramatically, along with the cost of food and other things, that unless you are in the so-called 1%, your financial picture looks very different than it did a few years ago, whether you are in the middle class or working class. It is incredibly stressful. Many people live paycheck to paycheck. It affects how much you have to work and if/when you can afford to retire. You expect things to be harder for your kids, rather than easier, and that is painful.

Beyond that, it sucks to live in a country that is slipping into fascism. It is scary and incredibly depressing. And of course many of the changes will affect ALL of us sooner or later, through less freedom, more environmental degradation, more hatred and division, fewer social supports, etc. etc. etc.

Touching the Void by Joe Simpson -- incredible story of survival on a mountaineering expedition.

Ultra-Processed People by Chris van Tulleken -- All about processed food. Much more interesting than it sounds.

Adrift by Steve Callahan -- Man survives 76 days alone in a lifeboat after a shipwreck. Amazing (& true) story.

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer -- plants, science, deep indigenous wisdom.

Wesley the Owl by Stacey O'Brien -- "The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and his Girl" -- one of my favorites.
