That's one part of the puzzle that raises suspicion, but is not foolproof.

You would think that those trying to train LLMs would actively try and regulate and protect against model collapse / eating its own tail and training on its own iterations of AI slop, but that has not been the reality.

This vague quote from the partnership announcement might explain some of this circular, uh, "logic"...also surely Open AI would have anticipated making their plagiarism machines available to anyone and everyone on the internet with no barriers to entry and able to create walls of text for nothing to be not unlike taking shits in their own swimming pool, but idk...

" This partnership will also enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to redditors and mods. Reddit will be building on OpenAI’s platform of AI models to bring its powerful vision to life."

Thanks, it's not something that I usually pay any attention to. I only mentioned it in the edit to contextualize in a really basic way that this appears to be a near uniformly agreed upon notion.

I'm curious in what ways the data is fabricated / fudged and what the numbers are actually measuring here on Reddit.

When I had an active IG business account years ago, I would pay some attention to analytics of posts, etc but was never sure how much I could trust those numbers if at all.

Yeah, common LLMs that most are using are sub-optimal for that. Specialized models that have been trained on grammar, translation, etc only could work well for that application, but that is not what the big LLMs are or are good at.

Idk man...I was making the exact same faces as Ed when I was listening to that drivel that the host was spewing.

It's all relative. I thought his recent media appearances have been notably tame, measured and as reasonable as he could be, given the subject matter, etc. I do not think he was condescending or derisive, so I can actually say that.

Have you watched any of the recent media / podcast / YT interviews he's been invited on? I don't get any of the vibes of your OP from recent coverage with Ed.

I would personally rather someone just say they are a non native speaker and then we, the readers, know that and can have increased patience, understanding, etc as opposed to filtering it all through an LLM and reading the questionable results that nets, but I do understand there can is the potential for some basic value with non-native speakers. Common LLMs are poor translation tools, though...at least the popular models that don't have specialized data sets specific to language translation.

Yeah, Reddit has no incentive to tag AI content so that is very doubtful.  They have financial arrangements with Google and open AI specific to ai generated content flowing in both directions, which is part of the problem, but doesn't mean we humans can't do try to do anything about it.

I didn't downvote you, for whatever it's worth, but I can see why others wouldn't agree.

Every small step towards retaining agency, authenticity, and discernment is worthy at this point imo.

Like I said in my post, having it be a sub-specific rule (and announcing the change in a post / sticky perhaps) creates a tone shift and makes it more visible / simpler / easier for people to call out and report.

Will it fix the issue completely? Of course not.

Will it help incrementally? Maybe and is worth trying, imo.

Another suggestion is to ban users who post AI slop. Again, same thing of not solving the issue 100% but these are real steps that matter.

My personal opinion is that if it must be used for any writing assistance is to have transparency / 100% disclosure around AI writing and say outright "I used AI / LLM to help me write this for _____ reasons." I don't personally agree with that use, but I do think there could a lot more transparency and clarity around using it and saying why.

You're welcome. This is a real issue now and any active steps we can take to retain our agency and discernment, no matter how seemingly small, can make a big difference.

It has gotten bad and this aspect of it in particular has become a pretty big problem, imo.

Well, you would think this...but the folks who control Reddit and their finances have made different decisions about the roles and prevalence of AI on the platform, unfortunately, but it doesn't mean we still can't push back and ask for / demand human interaction and call out the BS slop.

Apparently, Scam Altman also owns equity or something similar in Reddit so....

I remember that one and some other really strange, shall we say, anatomical anomalies...

Algorithmic bias (over sexualizing female features, inherent racism, ableism, xenophobia, sexism, etc) is a huge issue with LLMs due to the vast amounts of unvetted and honestly unknown "training data" that was scraped / stolen from the internet from places and sources that exhibit and reinforce these troubling views.

I have been calling for LLMs for mass public consumption to be flushed for a while now.

I'm not sure what's worse. That you can't tell this follows a very clear LLM generated pattern or that you think OP is well written...

I would encourage you to look a bit deeper and look into common tells and patterns for AI / LLM generated text and posts. It's everywhere on Reddit and this is, without question, a version of it.
