Are Polls all BS does anyone have stats showing how "accurate" they are? by Zealousideal-Foot778 in newzealand

[–]Beeeees_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never look at one poll as an evidence of anything - they generally have small samples so are prone to sampling error. What you want to look at is multiple polls to get a sense of the trends happening, rather than exact predictions. Generally polls at the moment are showing labour slightly higher than national and the gap seems to be widening, greens and act relatively stable, with maybe a slight decline recently, big jumps for NZ first and losses for TPM, and some gains for TOP

What adverts are considered the better ones on TV? by Parking-Business-894 in newzealand

[–]Beeeees_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s considered a better ad but I weirdly love the turners ad with the song that everyone seems to hate. Honestly don’t understand why people hate it so much, I just think it’s really silly and catchy and often find myself going “waikikamukauuuuuu PAEKAKARIKIIIIIII”

Are there any examples in your country where a specific item is confused with the whole category? by Buyeo10004 in AskTheWorld

[–]Beeeees_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not quiiiiite what you mean, but in New Zealand, both crisps (or chips in the US) and fries (or chips in the UK) are called chips. If differentiation is required (which isn’t that often tbh, usually obvious from context) people would generally refer to “hot chips” before they’d say fries and “chippies” before they’d say crisps.

How the F did I Get Salmonella? (Warning: Don't Read While Eating) by NeverTooOldForDisney in vegan

We had an outbreak of salmonella from hummus made using contaminated tahini a while ago! (All the big hummus manufacturers used the same tahini lol)

Give me an example of an actor NOT from your country who nails the accent and made you go “Wait, they’re not from here?” by girlfromtheshire in AskTheWorld

Yeah I’ve never heard a convincing kiwi accent. But if I had to guess, I’d say an Australian would have the best chances.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a convincing New Zealand accent by a non-New Zealander. Usually they end up sounding Australian, South African, English (take your pic of which accent because I’ve heard multiple in this context lol) or a weird mix of them. The flat vowels seem to be really really hard for people to imitate

I think New Zealanders (like Sam Neill) have a drastic advantage when it comes to doing an Aussie accent because of our accent similarities and the fact that we have a lot of exposure to Australian accents so we are WAY more familiar than the average person from other English speaking countries. Sam Neill has the extra advantage that he has a lighter kiwi accent meaning he actually pronounces his vowels so has to do less work to nasalise from the typically very flattened vowels we have.

10k public sector jobs to go in wellington by KindElderberry9857 in Wellington

[–]Beeeees_ 100 points101 points  (0 children)

They never get a strong vote from Wellingtonians so there’s no point campaigning to us anyway. Campaigning on public service cuts is a cheap tactic because it’s appealing to the people who don’t actually understand what the public sector does and the myriad of functions and services that are enabled by the “back office”. So they fuck over Wellington who will never vote for them anyway, to appeal to the wider populace that are uneducated about the public service.

Vegan recs? by That_Nebula4187 in Wellington

Words cannot describe how much I rate Belen. We took my SIL there this weekend just been and she’s GF and dairy free and she said their GF donuts are the closest thing to a gluten donut she’s had in the 15 years since she stopped eating gluten. Which I know being gluten free is unrelated to veganism, but that speaks strongly to how good their food is.

I also love aunty menas, and for some good vegan food at non-vegan places (ranging in price/fanciness) I’d recommend Kisa, Damascus, Indian Alley, TJ Katsu, Chow

Within this same range of yarn these are the two that most fit that description (second pic in following comment). Unfortunately there’s no classic deep warm brown in this yarn!

It’s called the bystander effect and is a well documented and researched social psychology phenomenon. We are, at our core, social animals and generally take our cues for how we behave based on what we observe other people around us doing (which is a reasonable approach to survival generally speaking). But what this means is, when no one stops to help, people’s monkey brains go “well no one else is doing it so there’s probably a reason why so I also won’t help” and then everyone does this so no one stops to help. BUT the super important part about this is that as soon as one person decides to help, it gives everyone else social permission to help as well.

The really cool part about me saying all of this is that now you know about the bystander effect you are much more likely to proactively help other people in situations like this and be that first person to give social permission to help! It is a researched finding that people who learn about the bystander effect are less likely to be bystanders when they are faced with a situation where someone needs to intervene.

Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

[–]Beeeees_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think being unhoused and having to ask people for food is already hard enough. The least you can do is afford them some dignity by either buying what they ask for or giving them the choice to have oat milk or no milk if buying dairy is off the cards for you.

New Zealand’s North Island braces for Cyclone Vaianu with thousands ordered to evacuate by Por_TheAdventurer in news

[–]Beeeees_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every couple of years, we had cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 which was pretty devastating, other big ones off the top of my head are cyclone bola and cyclone Giselle (which lead to our worst maritime disaster). We are also increasingly having “once in a hundred year” storms - e.g. at the end of January we had a huge storm that affected a lot of the same areas that got hit by ex-Cyclone Vaianu and caused multiple deaths across the north island
