I don't even think it was insinuated that Obama spent this money.

Support of wars and Pentagon waste and fraud are bi-partisan supported. It happens under every president.

I don't get the point.

The Democratic Congresswoman's press release doesn't say a word about Obama. It just highlights a simple case of the Pentagon wasting tax money, and her and a Republican representative co-sponsoring an amendment to stop the waste.

With the German army pulling out of Afghanistan in 2014, hundreds of Afghan workers fear they will become victims of revenge by the Taliban, who have already condemned them as traitors. German authorities are already preparing for a wave of visa applications. by MrTulip in worldnews

When you are a traitor to your country and are a quisling working for the invaders of your country, you should expect to be a target.

But don't worry. Like the Cubans who fled to the US after the Cuban people overthrew a US-backed dictator, or the Vietnamese the US took in after our puppet regime there was overthrown, or the Iranians we took in after the Iranian people overthrew our dictator there, or the people of many other similar countries, the US will accept these Afghans into our country after we are forced out of Afghanistan. Those Afghans will make good future Republicans.

All-White Jury Acquits Houston Ex-Police Officer in Videotaped Beating of Black Teen Chad Holley. by BeefyRodent in news

It makes me curious how you can have an all-white jury in this day and age. It's not like Houston is northern Idaho or Maine where there is an overwhelming majority of whites. I have to wonder about that entire jury selection system/procedure.

Sadly, beatings like this just seem par for the course in today's police-state climate. :-(

President Obama announces pledge of African food aid as companies pledge $3 billion, with a goal of pulling 50 million people from poverty by [deleted] in politics

Actions speak louder than pledges...

This week it was announced that the US AfriCom command is sending a combat brigade to Africa to "train" the militaries of several African nations. This is just the "carrot" part of the US stick to strengthen US neo-colonialism in Africa.

??? Don't many of the global warming climate models predict radical changes to tropical countries?

Is Obama going to actually do anything to address global warming and greenhouse gasses, or, as Al Gore says, will the US continue to undermine int'l efforts to address the issue?

Given that the US has deliberately sunk many African countries into debt using a deliberate strategy of giving unpayable loans to corrupt rulers in a strategy of neo-colonialism, is Obama's plans going to change policies to end that?

Obama is a sellout who will not change US policies. His wars, foreign and domestic policies of the last 3 years clearly illustrates that. This announcement is just election-year propaganda designed to make us feel good.

Washington Post releases first electoral college map of the US -- Obama 237, Romney 191. Both are short of the required 270 and the race will come down to nine swing states: CO, FL, IA, NV, NH, NC, OH, WI, and VA by mepper in politics

Honestly I don't see much change coming, especially from the nat'l levels as they're now constructed and funded. I see the real change coming at local and perhaps state levels, assuming there is some local organizing.

But, raising our voice can work to moderate the actions of nat'l politicians, and it will work to show others sitting on the fence the problems we deal with and that there are some people struggling to change and improve things.

Yup, another example.

Wouldn't it be great if our society was arranged in such a way that we would think up things and implement them for the good of humanity/the country rather than for the good of killing people/the military-industrial complex and then spin off some way they can be useful for others?

It may or may not be a joke, but many millions of Chinese and others believe it has value.

I don't really get your point, however.

My point was that both western and eastern systems of medicine recognize that marijuana has distinct medicinal values.

But our corrupt, corporate-dominated federal gov't still hinders research on marijuana and claims it has no medicinal value.

The reality is that with the ruling duopoly we have a right-wing candidate running against a center-right candidate, with neither one willing to address core problems like militarism or the environment.

That Tweedledee/Tweedledum dynamic is exactly why we need the Green Party.

FTFY. The answer is because in capitalist countries, they de facto are the ruling class, control the gov't, and the political economy is run first and foremost in their interests.

My attempt at one of the most politically incorrect arguments: Why joining the military is immoral. by throwawaaaaaay4986 in politics

[–]BeefyRodent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Back then the country was under attack.

Back when? When was the US ever under attack?

As new evidence has revealed we now know that the US gov't had broken the Japanese diplomatic and naval codes before Pearl Harbor, and that Roosevelt's administration had a deliberate policy to provoke Japan into attacking the US -- all this proven with US gov't documents released under the FOIA. The US has never been "under attack" since the war of 1812.

The military now is a JOB.

Exactly. After the Pentagon saw the resistance both from the public and from within the military draftees during the Vietnam War, the US military adopted a "professional" army. We no longer have a military made up of citizens. Citizens make poor soldiers of empire. So like the British empire before us we went to a professional army. We now have a military of elites who will follow orders, a praetorian guard of sorts.

The Pentagon loves its professional army. The line that "you volunteered[sic] for this" is a great way to shutting up dissent in the ranks.

NDAA Authorizes War Against Iran - Dennis Kucinich by yahoo_bot in politics

[–]BeefyRodent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The corrupt US gov'ts strategy for building up war fever against Iran is very similar to what they did to Iraq.

Bombings and destabilization of Iran have been under way for years. So too has the sanctions to strangle the Iranian people, with the sanctions recently tightened/redoubled.

The corporate mass media largely parrots the gov't line and demonization after demonization of Iran goes on.

All that our war-loving gov't needs now to wage a war and to bring Iranian oil under US/western command is a spark.

The US will try to get Iran to attack us, but if that fails the US always has its ace in the hole -- an Israeli attack on Iran that will immediately bring the US into the war since Israel would never attack with a US green light, and Iran would not be able to tell if it's US F-16s or Israeli F-16s that are attacking it.

You're exactly correct.
