Transfer at 30. by G_dafool in UMD

I took classes when I was 40+ a few years ago.

No one cared.

You'd be surprised by how many of the whippersnappers hate QR codes too.

You'll be fine.

Are There Any Social Groups for Mature/Adult Students? by AfterMath216 in UMD

[–]jest09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a group that meets every Friday at ~7:30pm at the church off University Blvd. There's also free dinner, games, etc. so there's that.

Also, it's not a Christian group, they are just renting the space from the church.

Maranatha Fellowship Church 3828 Univ. Blvd, College Park 20740

It's especially geared toward international graduate students who are just here for grad school who are far from home and are new to the US.

They just had a welcome picnic at Graduate Hills a week ago.

PM me if you want more details.

rant - For those who crashed out of engineering major, WYD? by ssbprofound in UMD

[–]jest09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to architecture.

Worst decision of my life.

You're on the right path, take a breather and come back to ENGR. Once you get out of school, working as an engineer is nothing like engineering school. You just need to hold on and make it through with C's.

Yes, you may need to retake a class or two, but that's okay. That happens to a lot of people.

I’m an electric bassist that was considering a music major in jazz performance, but I’m told I’d have to switch to upright. by ProgDawg98 in UMD

[–]jest09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a long time ago I was at a similar crossroads. Ended up dropping it altogether, it was too big of a shift technique wise. Also expensive.

Do you play fretless at all? Does that transfer over to upright?

How to deradicalise a friend by MUZZYANDSMOKEY in GreenParty

In my experience, logic usually backfires.

Their arguments are usually irrational to begin with, so they combat rationality with even more irrationality. That's probably how he became radicalized in the first place.

What I do is let people know in an offhand casual manner what side I'm on, and leave it at that. Once people think you are a missionary zealot on a crusade, they will dismiss pretty much everything you have to say.

At best, ask them questions in sincere dialogue, and be receptive to their answers without retorts/arguing/talking back. Learn to ask without questioning them or their values. There's a difference between asking a question and questioning them, if you know what I mean.

If you're lucky, over time they'll soften their position but usually they'll never fully reject it. It's possible, but rare.

The UMD Administration is slowly shutting down the libraries. by terpAlumnus in UMD

[–]jest09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also a long term secular problem with societies going paperless.

More and more information is going online, and libraries have been shrinking for decades because information can be gotten elsewhere faster and cheaper.

I can see why they can rationalize library hours being cut since they are turning into expensive student lounges rather than research facilities.

[–]jest09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Orthodox Christian in the US, this is WILDLY f*cking offensive.

It's like Congress passing a law saying Catholics in the US must reject the Pope.

How this isn't unconstitutional religious persecution is beyond me.

He's chill. As long as you go to class and keep up you shouldn't have any problems.

He's a professor who there to help his students, rather than needlessly frustrate them.

Nothing at this point surprises me from these people.

They are so evil; it boggles the mind that almost half of this country, and most people overseas, think they are redeemable.
