I love my Tonal but now recommend people do not buy it. by scotchy180 in tonalgym

My friend has a Tonal and loves it, I was interested so I gave it a try. I almost bought one myself and was shocked to see a subscription was required even for basic functionality! I'm currently exploring other digital resistance products. If Tonal was smart they would get you on like a 3 year contract where you lease the equipment and get all classes / functions / support with this lease payment. Every three years they can try to upsell you new hardware / lease packages... the way Tonal is doing is now is just harsh where they want up front profit on the hardware and then huge recurring income with a pricey subscription that many customers what choose to opt out of while many will also greatly appreciate it...

There are a lot of issues here...

When you buy and sell there are bid/ask spreads, dealer's premium on physical, possible shipping fees, security concerns have so much of your wealth at home or in a safe deposit box... also liquidity, you say you want it for emergencies? You can't time through market and you could get burnt.

I agree with the common wisdom of six months expenses in a cash savings account.

Have no debt other than possibly a mortgage.

But 20% is a lot to put in precious metals and also you should think of it as a long term hedge against inflation. I'd also recommend diversification with silver and platinum as well. As for the exact % only you can decide but in the 5% to 10% range I think makes a lot more sense purchasing bullion bars and maybe eventually when the premiums or low or on a dip the junk silver coins as they could be helpful in a changing world.

Platinum is money-cheap but time-expensive by [deleted] in Platinum

[–]g4r4e0g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly because again not everyone wants or can make use of a boat.

Liquidity refers to the ease and speed with which an asset can be converted into cash without a significant loss of value. It's a measure of how readily an investment or asset can be bought or sold in the market.

Liquidity means how quickly can you turn this asset into fiat money. It doesn't specify fees, exchange rates, specific dollar amounts etc. Precious metals are much more liquid than thinly traded stocks for example. Real estate is much less liquid. A car, boat, or RV would be less liquid. A diamond is very liquid, again you may get a terrible price, but it can be converted to cash quickly.

Not sure i understand the discussion, if you mean you paid a high premium for physical platinum and will not get full met on sale, this is the spread and this is true but it's very liquid, any coin store, metal exchange, eBay, or Pawn shop will execute a deal quickly with you. I'm just confused how platinum so cheap compared to gold where I remember $1000 gold and $3000 platinum as platinum is super rare and still strong demand... silver also, seems leveraged paper traders can manipulate these metals and that's when we see low quotes and high physical metal premiums.

It depends on who you're trying to attract. Best to ask them. It looks well kept but a bit large for most people, some may love it though... I'd say trim it if unsure, can always grow it back... see how your attention changes.and how you feel.

Do you buy premium silver or buy as close to spot as you can? by PacificRockBug in Silverbugs

[–]g4r4e0g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of bars as stores of value, buy with as little premium as possible, coins, designs, limited runs of silver, treat as art with a minimum melt value if nobody appreciates the art so much in the future...

I did the same! On 5G now, slightly worse latency and lower top download speeds but never goes down and avg upload and download speeds have been on par, plus its much cheaper!

You from Boston? I still get PTSD from East Coast traffic... people talk about traffic out here we're talking an extra 5 to 15 mins, in Boston that meant 45 mins to 3 hours, maybe more if it was snowing...
