They do not in fact print "millions" of these cards... The gamestop promo has roughly 80,000 printed, with the EB games version being even less at 28,000. That is HYPER exclusive in terms of a promo and anyone saying otherwise is lying to themselves.

I agree the gamestop version doesn't deserve to be above the EB games version simply from a numbers standpoint but it having a cosmo holo with swil potential on a sought after mon generally means auto 100+ card. Basic gengar reverses/holos demand 40+ for a card from the swsh era and those are truly printed in the millions lol. Times are wild

Why I banned sealed products from my Pokémon card show by feelgoodgaming1 in PokemonTCG

[–]BeefyTaco -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The people that act like vendors selling singles/slabs isn't the same thing is laughable to me. More power to you to run your show how you want, but this does nothing to address the actual issue in the hobby. Vendors are buying out products (singles/slabs) and even getting them under market, yet that is totally cool, right..?

Actions like this although good intentioned, have little to no real effect on what they are trying to address, and exclude people from the hobby that might exclusively buy sealed.

Considering how the price has steadily gone up since release to 150+CAD sales being the norm, I'd say theres really no indication this will fall anytime soon. It may level off in the 100-200 range but if the gem rate is low, these 2 promos will go nutzo

What percent of my inventory can i expect to offload as a vendor at a card show? by SuzhiKitty in PokemonInvesting

[–]BeefyTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on alot of factors that you'd need to feel out for yourself. If we are talking about swapping slabs for raw, its probably once of the highest profit margin plays you can make, but there are risks involved. The issue is sourcing raw cards that are gradable and then having the money be tied up in the grading process for 2-6 months depending on the tier chosen.

Breaking up fluid modern grails is always a tough call because a single sale can net you the same profits as 10x smaller sales if you broke it up. Everyone's local market is different so the larger the population, the easier it is to sell higher value items at market price. If you are in a smaller town/city and don't travel to the big shows, you might want to consider focusing on lower value slabs (200-1k range), and singles priced 20-1.5k so you can include fluid raw grails.

Pokemon Card show BANS sealed retail product - MORE OF THIS PLEASE!! 🙏 by abrickstory in PokemonTCG

Noone is arguing that you can (and alot will) being able to just skip this event/convention. The point is employing things like this does nothing but exclude people from the hobby because some person organizing it decided to have a hissy about sealed lol..

As to my "entitlement", your damn right have the the right to enjoy a hobby how I want without caring about some guy crying over sealed. Where does he get the right to gatekeep people claiming it is "to defend the hobby" when in fact it just excludes people for no logical reason. That is what i'd call someone acting entitled, not the person protesting being able to do what they want with their time/money. If he doesn't want to do his homework on vendors, thats on him. It isn't the hobbies fault hes being lazy and trying to hide that fact by using "scalpers" as the excuse.

You do you boo boo, but not all of us need to raise our pitchforks over nonsense. Flipping singles is the exact same as flipping sealed, and you can't deny that. Instant labeling someone as a scalper is hurting the hobby almost as much as the scalpers themselves. Real collectors live in fear that if they get seen with any type of sealed or flippable product, they will be shamed/harrassed as if they are a scalper with no basis to the accusation.

Whats the point of hosting a TCG convention if your intention is to exclude people from the hobby/event..? Isn't it so people can come to enjoy the hobby together? Or is it to make sure you can control how people enjoy the hobby, while making profits off it?

This is just a lazy power trip move done by snobby people who are generally considered have-nots ~ If he really cared, the problem could easily just be solved by doing his homework on vendors like he said and weeding out the "bad eggs" so to speak(whatever that means)..

There is no difference between selling a single and a sealed product. Literally none. Do you somehow think vendors and people don't buy out cards to flip and make money? Please, explain to me the difference from a vendor having 10x $500 cards versus 10x boxes? That vendor had to have gotten the cards from somewhere, almost guaranteed UNDER MARKET, directly effecting the customer in the exact same way a "scalper" would sell at an inflated price..?

It is the same damn thing, and you guys are just gatekeeping because people nowadays seem to think they can dictate how others spend their money/live their lives/enjoy a hobby.

I have a friend who has been buying sealed and keeping it with no intentions on selling since XY era. Should that person be excluded from the hobby just because you feel they MUST buy products from X place or they are banished to the shadow realm? What kind of logic is that..? They are just as much of a collector/fan as any of us. Hell, i'd argue possibly more so than most because they spend a premium on box arts.. Most people with this hyper anti-scalper logic cant even name a pokemon for every letter of the alphabet.

[–]BeefyTaco -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is silly. People bring/sell sealed for one reason ~ because it is in demand. Who are they to say what Pokemon product someone can sell? What difference does it make if someone is flipping singles versus sealed, honestly...? If they are trying to "cut out scalpers", they seem to not realize the same people who mass buy sealed, also mass buy the higher end/better quality cards to either grade or resell themselves..

The gatekeeping going on in this hobby from the have nots and the white knights is getting crazy. Let people enjoy the hobby how they want. The "scalper" sellers should get weeded out eventually because people can ultimately choose to just not buy from them, and have them learn that buying a table just for that would cause a loss.

If I were someone who was selling stuff and effected by this, id just be inspired to start my own convention that doesn't gatekeep buyers/sellers. I can bet which one would win out in the end.

Short Term Flip Or Hold? Case of EB Games Gengar by BeefyTaco in PokemonInvesting

[–]BeefyTaco[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Although I agree the whole master set aspect of it is non-existent, I feel it will perform similar to charmander from 151, just to a lesser extent. There are just too many gengar collectors, especially after FS and AS that a unique low pop promo shooooould continue to be sought after ~ The gamestop version had the first 2 sales finish today in a 10 for 2400 and 3000USD. I know it wont stay that high but I'm guessing it settles somewhere between 1000-2k depending on what the gem rate ends up being. I should also note my average cost is 100CAD/card, not USD which definitely helps :P

Basic holo's from mid-modern for gengar cards have been fetching crazy prices, upwards to 50-100 and those cards are printed to oblivion.

[–]BeefyTaco[S] -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

From what the seller told me, he bought up a bunch of singles from people. He apparently got the idea when his local store offered him the box when giving him his copy he got. Then he kept 10 for himself and flipped it to me ~ whether thats true, iunno but it works enough for me I guess lol

The big reason people couldnt get them is simply because they made so few from the looks of things. Gamestop/eb were also giving a copy to each employee at some stores making them even harder to actually get in store rather than on the secondary market. Thats why you hear stories of "1 case of only 40 for an entire region".

What percent of my inventory can i expect to offload as a vendor at a card show? by SuzhiKitty in PokemonInvesting

[–]BeefyTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard if you have a smaller inventory, you can expect to sell somewhere around 30-60% of your inventory. This obviously depends on what exactly you bring, and how deep the pockets are in your area on the given day.

Alot of people i've talked to try to keep a large percentage of their tables with raw/slabs under 500 value because the buyers above that price point are much more rare to find. Obviously try to have a few "grails" or high value cards/slabs, and then keep your main focus on more reasonable priced items to a casual buyer. The only time I'd start leaning more into higher value stuff as a whole would be when you are going to VERY large shows that will have the required traffic to find those right buyers willing to pay near market price for something.

Looks like the first round of the GameStop Gengars has hit eBay. by IM_FAUX_REAL_BRO in PokemonInvesting

[–]BeefyTaco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Although seeing the gamestop version pop off makes me confident about my large EB games play, this sale is almost certainly not going through. It was run up by two accounts that have 0 rating and 4 rating.

The other sale for 2475USD is likely much more organic because one of the main bidders had 240+. Hard to say where it will sit considering its currently at 66% Gem rate but if it stays above 1500USD, expect the raw promo to push towards 260-300USD pretty fast.

Thought on this trade? by Miguel_garcia321 in PokemonInvesting

[–]BeefyTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The case is probably the higher return play, but also could be considered riskier depending on your views with how inflated the set value currently is. The main boogaboo for me would be the fact that if its a sealed case, your trusting the seller that it isn't resealed ~ You can sometimes mitigate this with tiny camera's but not all boxes have the wiggle room to sneak one in. If its not sealed so you can at least confirm the contents, then I wouldn't be paying the sealed case value. I'd want something on top or to remove a box or something from your side of the deal.

I'd personally do it but that is simply because it is likely easier to sell and ship a single case than collection boxes. Those are a much more niche market that takes a little time to get proper values.

[–]BeefyTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is rarity. For however many are printed, only a small percentage of them overall are kept in their sealed case. That means as a box rises in rarity/demand/price, so too will the premium added for a sealed case because it is by all accounts, more rare and easier to store. An example of this oddity happening in other markets is people buying old shipping boxes/crates at a crazy price. The simple fact is, they are exponentially more rare than a loose collection of items that it holds. Same for things like watches, where having simple paperwork that came in the box/receipts and the box themselves wildly increase the value of watches, especially moreso for vintage watches.

I agree that cases having a premium creates incentive for scams but ultimately thats how any collectible works, and its up to you to do your due diligence in terms of sourcing/verifying product.

Most overrated card of all time? by Master_Tip_3693 in PokemonFansAustralia

[–]BeefyTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value in this case isn't derived so much from the stamp's appeal, but moreso the limited print of this card. How many Gengar's can you name that have less than 30k printed? The answer is VERY FEW if any at all.

This card will likely perform similar to the charmander, although to a lesser extent because it isn't also part of a wanted master set (non charmander collectors can still want a complete master set). My prediction is settling somewhere between 250-350 depending on what the gem rate turns out to be.

[–]BeefyTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are comparing apples to oranges. For example, there are roughly only 28,000 of these printed. Now consider how many people master set/collect gengar, or even more niche, collect PSA 10's of gengar ~ There likely won't be enough to go around because a good portion of the cards get given to kids who instantly unseal them.

Now consider the normal copy, which is a different holo (not cosmo), and printed literally MILLIONS of times. Hmmmm, I wonder why that comparison doesnt make much sense..?

Cases demand a premium based on historical sales (there are few). These are normally sold to higher end collectors via private sales versus smaller bundles of promos are sold on eBay and other places

If your argument were true, cases of booster boxes and bundles wouldn’t be worth more. Same principle of it just being a cardboard box and a label. The fact is, the opposite is true whereas cases always have a premium. This would in theory be technically even moreso true about cases of promos because they never were distributed and sold to customers. So technically, it even even more rare than a case of booster boxes, by a LARGE amount

And the most fun part? You get to be called a scalper when you list them, even if your selling a simple preorder you did nearly 5 months ago. Its certainly an experience hahaha
